McCue, one of the efficient clerks in the post office, placed on our table yesterday two ears of corn, almost ripe, and therefore out of danger fram frost They were raised on his father's farm about six miles trom Council Bluffs, They look very rich, and measure over filteen inches long. Upon the death of the late D, W, Crawford, of this city, a certain note of band not yet paid was wanted to assist specta- was inspectors if necessary, the company with this amunition of the law and facts of the case, waited patiently for some one to appear to back up the eharge made g0 boldly and so publicly ashort time ago. No one appeared, however, and after a hour of walting, Judge Aylesworth dismissed the case for lack of prosecution. The charge was brought on the mat- ter of three barrels shipped to M. G. Edwards, Glenwood. Inspector Batch- lor teated this oil and pronounced it only 130 degrees and consequently condemned 1t, and then filed informa- tion against the company for selling it. The company, not satisfied with having the case dropped, proceeded yesterday afternoon to test this same A sample of it was brought to Tne Bee and thore tested by Mr. T, McGowan, in the presence of ox-Tnspector Bachelor, Mr, Tem- pleton, the chief of the tire department and newly clect oil in apector, Alderman Newell, chairman of the council committee on floes and police, and sovoral othors, This de- | tails of the test were closely watched by all, and the result was that inatead of being 130° only and unfit_for il- fuminating purposes, it showed 160 °, ten more than the law requires, Mr. McGowan took peins also to explain to thos differ- 3 might arise from L in making tests, result could be obiatn nt had an excellont opportuuity of secing and of learning, and ail soomed perfoctly satisfisd with the fairness of the test, and it became ap- parent that Mr. Batchelor's lack of experience could eseily account for the diflerence in the tests. They also changed the ordinance gomewhat. Mr, Tompleton is in doubt about accepting the office at all. If he does not, the inspecting business here will prob- ably drop into nothing If he does, he will probably run it as a side issue to his other business, and in a quiet, sensible manner, It is safe to say he present, wWron will not get into any such foolish sorape as did Mr. Bat The Kuropean restaurant opons Friday, Sept. let.
