In the three days he has inspected one barrel each at five ditferent places, and the + ther inspections have been of the Consolidated ofl company, Do not any of the dealers have more than one barrel on hand to be inspected wt a time? Lt the inspector brace up a little more yet and the public will be better satisfied. The fees for three days’ work have thus far been about fifty cents, If he will xeally protect the public he should bave more than thum that, but if he continued s he started in, working for the building up of some particular firm, the off.ce pays better than it deserves, 1t is to be bhoped, bowever, that the monkegiog about will stop, and that the inspector will settle down to work for the public, rather than “or private good, f FIRE FIENDS. They T“-nrz!'\rizn L. H. Moss- ler's Residence and Then Try to Burn It. They Fail to Carry Either Plot to Suocess About half past 4 o'clock yesterday morning fire was discovered in the Mossler, on the corner of Bancroft street and Fourth residence ot L. H avenue, but it was speedily equelched, without calling out the department, Investigation shows that it was the work of burglare who thus sought, by adding crime to crime, to make their escape more certain. Mr. Mossler is away from home, being in the east, and there was in the house, Mra. Mossler and another lady. On retiring they left a lamp burning low in the dining_room, They were awakened yeaterday morning, and hearing the roaring sound of the fire, and finding the light out, hurried into the kitch- en, where there were two blazes start- ed on the floor by kerosene, which were quickly extinguished, and did little harm. In the bath room adjoining the kitchen there was a more serious blaze, it having been started by cutting a hole in the wall, and putting paper and rags saturated with oil. The flames were blazing up betwoen the plastering and had com- municated with the roof, but with the nssistance of neighbors who came run- ning in response to the cry of alarm, this fire was also put out, though not before it had burned quita a hole in the roof, After the immediate case of danger had been removed by the suppression of the flames, there was time for mora careful investigation, and it showed that the fire had been set with some evidently diabolical intent. The kerosene can in use in the house had apparently been emptied of its con- tents, the o1l being spilled in two places on the kitchen floor, in one place there being a box with rags etc., and the other spot being near the kitchen stove, The hole cut into the wall from the bath room had been prepared with cqual care. A further look about the house showedithat the silverware had been removed from the china closet, and piled up in the front hnllwvy ready to be carried off. This indicated that burglars had been at work, but in collecting their plun- der they had overlooked the most valuable ware, that which was sohid being packed away, 8o that they took only the plated ware, It seems as if aftér collecting the plunder they planned to startsuch a fire in the rear of the house as would surely cause its destruction, but either the flames sped too rapidly, or elso the women awak- oned too soon, and they hurried out of tho back door without getting the plunder after all. The back door was found unlocked, which was the only one thus found, and how they gained an entrance to the house is not cortain. The damage to the house is fortunately not great, but that such a bold and devilish attempt should be made to rob and burn is enough to wake up the authorities to the fact that there are men in this community who are ready for any deed. BT EE e FOR SALE. My residence, No. 7156 Fourth stroet L. F. Mukeny. New Enterprise, From Council Bluffs radiate in every direction of thé compass not stub line railroads, but main lines, extending with their branches or foeders thousands of miles. Men of foresight and business enterprise no- tice these facts, acknowledge our city to be the best located for manufactur- ing purposes in the west, take advan- tage of hor position, and start their factories and other enterprises in our midst. While the majority of our citizens do appreciate these facts, many there are who do not spare the time to give them a thought, and therefore do not realizo them, It will at all times afford Tue Bax pleasure to write up her advantages and bus- mess enterprises. The latter is get- ting to be of great importance to the people of the northwest. On yesterday Tur Bek reporter dropped into the Council Bluffs Manu- facturing company, located at the foot of Third street, convenient to the difforent railroads. This is s new enterprise. We found it a live and busy place. They commenced busi- noss a little over a month ago, and yet, although several hands are em- ployed, they can hardly keep up with their orders, J J. Hathaway, Esq., well and favorably known throughout the west, is the gentlemanly manager. He needs no introduction from us. He was the superintendent of the weod construction of the Grand Union Pa- cific depot here, and later the efficient lnpcrinlandant of our Union stock- yards, Heis wu practical mechanic and & most obliging gentleman. The machinery at the manufactory is worked by a thirty horse power en- gine, A new machine has just beem pul in place—a four sided twelve inch g7 ner and moulder, at a cost of over 00, It has a capacity of running out thirty-five feet of moulding each winute, Two more new and costly muchines are on the road and expected to arrive daily, The latter machines are for sash and bline work, The firm make a speciaity of all kinds of mouldings and inside finish- ings. To show the reasonableness of their prices, they are at the present time filling & contract to make curbs for chain pumps at Chicago prices This is a saving to the purchaser of the freight charges, They are at this writing over run with orders, yet they guarautee customers—those sending in mail orders “Il cially, to receive prompt attention, They solicit corres. pondence and guarantee prompt re plice. ABold Bad Man Who Puils a|Small- Pox Patient Abouttbe Room and Captures the Flag, A man named Moses O'Neile has been arrested for some crazy antics which he has been cutting up at the houso where there is a small-pox patient, near the C. & R. I. depot. O’Neill entered the house either drunk or crazy apparencly, and seizing the sick man pulled him about the room, without any apparent fear of catching the dises~e himself, or of in- juring the invalid. There was a woman and child in the house but they could do nothing to prevent him. Onleaving ho grabbed the flig of warning and proceeding to one of the cabooses in the railway yard, showed it in triumph to the railway men, as though he had cap.ured the standard of an enemy. It 18 not dotermined yot whother O'Neill wes crazy or not, but iy is thought that he must have been. It is quite a problem to us what shall be done in case he shall be con- victed. If ha has to lie in jail he may come down with the disease there, which would be etill furthering the trouble, A Young Man Narrowly Eecapes Pay- g Dearly for His Foollshness. Ono of tho well known young men of this city, and one who has borne an excellent reputation, found himeelf yesterday charged with a rather seri- ous oflense, but on an examination of the facts the affair was dropped, it appearing to be a plot set to entrap him and squeezs some money from him. The young man formed the acquaintance of a young widow, who lives with her brother-in-law, and is at least familiar enough with said brotherin-law to greatly arouse sus- icions that she is nearer and dearer y far to him than a housekeeper. This widow borrowed some money of the young man for some purpose, and cavtioned him to say nothing abeut it to her brother-in-law. After a time the young man slipped up to the house to collect the money. He had already been quietly informed by the brother- in-law that the widow was rather sus- ceptible, and so on this visit was not particularly surprised at the widow leading the conversation into a rather amorous channel. The interview wounld have doubtless been harmonious, but for a failure to agree o n meney con- siderations, and as a result of the dif- ference the widow charged the young man Mith assaulting her in an insult- ing, rather than blood-curdling man- ner, She went so far as to have a warrant issued and the young man arrested, The brother-in-law intimated that a little money would fix the mat- ter all right, but the yourg man would not be equeezed, and the judge on hearing the facts dismissed the charge against the young man, e PERSONAL, W. Chapwan, stirted off yesterday after- noon for a chicken shoot, The local paper at Kimball, Buell county, Dakota, says: *“We had the pleas. ure of u call from a party of Iowa's repre- sentative men on Thursday, The party consisted of Judee E. E, Aylesworth, Col, D, B, Daily, J, W, Laing, Esq, D, Maltby, Esq., W, ¥, Sapp, Jr., Surveyor J. F, Bredveck, N, ¥, Taylor, Esq.,, of Council Bluffs, and Hon, W. A, Warren, or Toronto, Canada, These gentlemen are looking with a view to permanent set- tlement, and seem to be well pleased with this part of Dakota, They appreciate the natural stock and agricultural advantages offered here, and will not be slow in avail- ing thewmselves of some of these free prof- fered homes, We are glad to see such men become interested with us. It is only another evidence of the greatness of this to be great state o of llllnl 2. ~J, Fred, Myers, the editor of The npareil, who is with the other vounty editors on a western eXcursion, writes back that they *‘are affected by the air at Leadyille, causing feelings of dizziness,” This accounts for some of the “dizsy” ed- itorials which appesr in The Nonpareil columus, it being well known that while away the excursionist sends in his matter daily by mail, THREATENED TROUBLE In the Chi- fta Pool xt Lively Timee Promi. cago and Council Within the Week or Two. | . The probable rupture of the Towa | pool roads, foreshadowed in an ar- ticle in The Chicago Ti the second page, would be hailed with delight by the business men and ship- pera of this city. the combination has been intensified greatly by the late action of the pool in unjustly ratsing rates to its pomnt 80 a8 to make them as high as to Oma- ha, the cost of carrying freight the oxtra distance to Omaha being ig- nored completely. critaination has caused much com- plaint, and an eagernces to mee the pool broken The complaints against the arbitrary es, printed in The feeling against This unjust dis- lines are increaeing in number and intensity among live stock men. Stock which is shipped here on other roads with the express stipula- tion that it shall be shipped over some particular one of the pool lincsis often sent over whichever line the ‘“‘evener” dictates, without regard to tho con- tract. There aro pirtics who have money and backbone who will not stand this dictation, violation of con- tract and consequent inconvenience and damage, and they have frequently threatened of late that if any ot their stock is thus shipped they will not hunt 1t up, but will sue at once for damoges. The railroads are eharp enough to know their men, however, and do not care to thus uee men who will fight for their rights. TATEXAS STEER. it Breaks Through the Floor of the City Bullding into the Base- ment. When the police opened the door of the city calaboose yesterday morning the found but one prisoner inside. There wore two the night before, the missing one being ‘‘Texas” the irre- pressible darkey, who i8 as full of fun when eober, as he is full of deviltry when drunk, A look about the place at first revealed no way by which he eacaped. The locks seemed intact, and the bars had not been hurt. The other drunk who was stul in custody could give no information as he slept soundly, and on waking found ““Texas” gone. He suggested that it being pretty hot in their “Texas” might have vaporized. After some hunt it was noticed that there was a hole in the floor right under the bunk, and also a hole in the bunk itself, and further investigation showed that *‘Texas’ passed through thesc into the basement, and thence through the front door which has been unlocked for a long time, It was concluded that the when he got into his bunk for the night he fell through, bunk, fl>or and all, and finding himself 1 the base- ment, improved the providential op portunity of escaping. The rotten and insecure condition of the lock-up made this theory of escape quite vlausible, and is & warning to others, who chance to be locked up in the calaboose, not to fall asleep and roll out of bed, lest they tumble out of jail, he fact is that the present city building is a disgrace to Council Bluffs, The court roow is a farce, the police headquarters completely unfit for the purpose, and the lock-up is filthy and vermin abound. There are no accommodations by which any dif- ference can be made between a pris- oner who is beastly druuk and filthy, and one who is sober and clean, There is no place where fomale pris- oners can be locked up, and there is 1o security for keeping a shrewd and experienced rogue. From top to bot- tom the city building is a farce, and ought to bo abandoned aud that right speedily. A new ono has long been promised the public, Let the promise be made good. et L R A Proof Positive, ‘We have the most positive and convine. ing proof that Tromas' ELeotric O1L i« a most effectual specitic for bodily pain, In cases of rheumatism snd neuralgia it gives instant relief, aug2-1w MAIN STREET LIVERY,: FEED —AND— SALE STABLE.
