The Prairie Producte of Fro- jific Nebraska Takes the Lead. The famons Dencon Inangurates a Bitter Railroad War, Symptoms of the Mercantile Volcano Unaerlying Denver. Bpecial Correspondence of The Boe, DeNvER, Augast, 22,--1 boughta ticket from Pueblo to Denver and re- turn for §1.50, cver the D. & N. O. R. R. The distance is 120 miles, 240 miles in all, for §1.50. This is all that the worst anti-monopolist could de- sire. Lot us inquire into thia cheap rate, Last apring Gov. Evans opened the Denver & Now Orleans route to this place, bus the D. & R. G., and Atchison & Topeka determined to crush it out. Ouae road would not turn over to the new line the goods consigned to it. It was notin the ring, it did not belong to the pool, and ro it wmust bo crushed The officers decided on a bold move. They put the fare down from $7 from Omaha to Denver to §1, and have kept it up all summer. Of course the D, & R. G. liad to drop also, but the sympathy wes with the D. & N O. and their traing were crowded to suffication. Their depot is out of town which makes it incon- venient, but thoy will soon open in town and have a fair chunce, Being broad gauge it is much more pleasant traveling than on the narrow zaugo. Since the exposition cpened the D. & N. O. have made Denver and return $1.50, It is estimated that the cut in &ix months will cost the D. & R & at least a hali a million of dollars, But he:e we are in Denver. The ex- | position is three wiles from the depot, Why it should haye been 8o far off it is hard to tell, unless it was to hoom up some lots in that cotion, Den ver is a wonderful city —about 60,000 &t present, and she is laying out lots enough for two or three millions, Whether all her goldon dreams will be renlized is uncerfain. Probably theroe is not a city on earth which em- bodies the local pride she does. It is not safe to make a suggestion to an old resident that there is anything out of joint. It won't do to criticise too much, and when & man like Tabor hits & bonanza and goes up 4n a boom if he wilI}.nt UP & Biaguin- t hlaal A Legil, 00Dy veowny NG VR & grand opera house, he is forgiven many irregulari- ties of conduct, which would pul vir. tue to the blush. However, Denver is a modern miracle, and we accord all praise to her wonderful prosperity. But Iam credibly informod there is an undercurrent of uneasiness, busi- ness overdone, Many a merchant trying to get over a tightiplace on chattel mortgages and two per cent, a month., But then all young cities and many old one have the same experi- ence, Three railroads go to the exposition grounds. The building ie fine and im- posing, wuch like that in Chieago. The U, P. have made a splendid ox- hibit of the treasurers of the prairie, and of the mines. Nebraska is well represented by them, The Atchison & Topekaare also here, and here I grasp the hand of the inevitable and unbiquitous Randall,of the B. & M. 1f ever a man was fitted to his place it is Randall. Through his channel he has done great things for Nobraska, He has added thousands to her popu- lation, and spread her fame far and wide, and whenever there is a niche where he can put in a Nebraska ex- hibit he is there, and at it. knows just where to put everything * a wonder, buthe doesit. Chaffee county makes an excellent showing, Here are fine specunens from the classic Mouut Princoton, Boulder county has a noble exhibit, and is doing an immense awmount of work, But time would fail to. enum- erste all the aturactions. There are some wonderfully clear, blue crystals, some white, some dark. Here are fine Ywimuu of marble, and by the Pueblo parties go to locate a 1 out of foolish grudge against Den- ver, did not make any exhibit, but she eould have placed be- fore the public some of the finest bwilding stone in the world, Here are samples of granite, and probably Colorado owns more of this material than any state in the Union Here are solid blocks of soda, four feet thick, piled up like a monoment; also immense blocks of coal. We saw some anthracite which scemed of an excellent quality The mer- chants of Denver are using considerable space, and are showing much taste in exhibiting their wares, but after all, to the dweller of the prairie the resl attractions are the re- sources of this mountain etate. But CUolorado has some things she cannot exhibit, and that is her mountain scenery, Why painters have not put more of the grandeur and sublimity of our great land on canvas is a won- der, There is an art allery here but it has little of mountain scenery. Some pictures of pioneer times are very fine. But the crowning glory of the whole is a most pathetic 1llustra- tion of the ‘“Song of the Shirt,” & young msewing woian. The morning is breaking and in its dim light you see her wan, anxious, imploring look--a look of wearinoss, of patienes and sorrow you cannot describe. Her countenance is almost transparent, her eyes are weary and hollow, You sit there and gaze at her till the tears come, and you can't help it. Her suffering is so great and you can't avert it, You wan't to take her down to the restau- rant and buy her a pood, warm meal, but she can’t go, You want to put a £5 bill in her thin fingers and tell her to reat a week, but she can't take it, aud there you are be- foro that pathe'ic picture a mass of helpless sympathy, and you can’t help yourself, you, sir, there with your handkerchiet to your eyes, though you know she ain’t alive, but it is hard to believe it, Near this is another pic- ture, ‘‘Wolves Waiting for a Wounded Buffalo.” The poor fellow has an ar- ros7 in his side. The blood is running from his mouth. He has a helpless defeated look, and those wolves seem to understand the prospect. They vather around him ; they are coming in the distance ; and there is one with his nose in the air setting up his howl. You con almost hear him, The picture is so vivid that if you wenu back next day you would naturally expect to see pothing but a lot of clean picked bones, Thero is an effort now being made $o got the railrond farcs down so that the people can come en mnsse to the cxposition, At present it is poorly attended. While there, the weather waw fine, hut there were not over 200 peopld, when there should have been 2,000, It is ko be hoped that all the pool lines will #nite on such a rate that people can wtord to visit. The speed was frightful, and for ten min- utes the water stood in a wall fully eighieen inches above the forward gun wale on each side of the boat, the velocity preventing even a single drop from entering the interior. At the end of the time mentioned fully four miles of the distance be- tween where the animal was struck and the head of the bay had been covered, and the speed of the living tug began to slaken through exhaus- ton, Finally it ceased altogether, and after spouting a strong jet of a blood-red tinge the stricken mother once more sounded. Her stay under- neath the waves was of short dura- tion, and on reappearing on tho sur- faco her movements were only suffi- cient to keep the gigantic carcass afloat, Pelling up to within five fathoms of the whale the mer rested on their oars. Ten seconds later Capt. Mariano had his chance; a second ex- plosion was heard ana the rubber- winged bomb buried itself in the mass of blubber, Scarcely hud the smoke cleare’ away from tho bow when the muflled bomb, ¢x loding in the his- torical residence of Jonah, sounded the death koell of the old humpback. The victira's huge bulk once more be came animated and the deadly flukes lashed the water as the whale strug- gled in the throes of death, The waterapouts changed into blood spouts and grew smaller and smaller as the strugglos became more contracted until tinally with one last effort the leviathan wlled on its back und ex- pired. he reporter heaved a sigh of rolief and Leartily joined inthe crew's shout ol viotary, which was anawered from the other boats, by this time only a few fathamas distant, ey If Yo 4 re Ruined in health from amy cause, especially from the use of any she thoussnd nos- trums that promise so largely, with long fictitious testimonials, have no fear.
