What Has Been Done and What Is Being Done by the Engineers. San Fran:isco Chronicle Operations in connection with the projected Panama Canal have for some time past been principally directed to the completion of the surveys along the line of the canal. This work, though prosecuted with all possible dispatch, has met with considerable vexatious delay in endeavoring to ma- terially reduc: the excavations after the central line of the canal shall be determined, With this end i view, the regular engineer corps has been divided into exploring parties, each having its designated locality for a field of operations. The instructions invariably received are to ascertain the topography of the country along the main line of the canal as at present de- cided upon, note carcfully the differ- ent acclivities encountered in the im- mediate vicinity and their adaptability for stations. On the conclusion of these researches a roport is submitted to the Executive Board at Panama, and by the comparison which is inati tuted a line is resched as a basis for future operations, Under the direc- tion of Pedro Soss, a prominent Columbian engineer, excellent results have been arrived at, so that the ex- cavations orizinally proposed have been materially reduced THE CENTRAL LINE. In an Interview with Jeronimo Ossn, a member of the engineer corps in Panama, and who arrived in this city by the last steamer, it was ascer- ned that the surveying had been finished, and that attention is now concentrated upon determining the canter of the canal. The route of the canal has already been cleared of trees, and with the above exception everything is in readiness for the ex- cavation to eommencs In fact, acon- tract has already been given to exca- vate a distance of eight miles, from Colon to Garum, and it is expected that work will be commenced on No- vember 1sl. As nas been previously noticed in The Chronicle, the machin- ery to be used in this work is in pro- cess of construction, some of it await- ing shipment from this city to New York. DAMMING THE CHAGRES, The most important labor, that of erecting a dam at Gamboa on the Chagres river, engrosses the attention of the engineers, Over sixty kilome- tors of the river have been explored and its sfiluents and currents siudied. In another direction tracks have been laid for the purpoke of carrying the excavated earth and stones to the pro posed site of the dam, while along the whole route of the canal, from Colon to Panama, stations have been esab- lished. A large number of warehouses have also been built, A commodious hospital has been constructed upon an eminenco in Panama for the beneit of tho canal company's employes and placed under the direction of compe- tent physicians. An additional con- tract to that cited above has heen given forthe cxcavation of 87,000 cubic meters at Obispo, where a largs warehouse will be built, as well as ad ditional shops to those already erected It is now detinitely settled that the canal will be completed within the time originally assigned. Passing from the recent develop- ments, Senor Osea stated that business in Panama, under the influence of the general activity along the line of the canal, had largely increased, and that the laboring classes experienced no lack of employment.
