THE DAILY BEE- -TUESDAY. AUGUST 16 188, —— = ] — = COUNTY CONNUBIALITIES The Union of Dodge and Saun- ders Counties. A Great Barbacue and Other Festivitiee, Omaha Orators Contribute Word Boquets for the Occasion. Correspondence of Tra Tan. Norte Bexp, August 12,—This has been a gala day for North Bend., The union of Saunders and Dodge coan- ties by the completed bridge across the Platte has been celebrated by a barbacue, A great concourse of peo- ple numbering over 2,000 persons were present. Tho day was ushered in by the firing of a grand salute. At 10 a. m. a delegation from Saun- ders county was met by a procession of citizons, headed by the Bohe- mian band, discoursing martial mu- sic. The procession marched to Kerth’s grove adjoming this little city, and by the way one of the most delightful groves in the city. A platform had been erected here for speakers, and ample accommoda- tions had been provided for seats. The ceremony was opened with a prayer by Rev. E.S8. Davis. This was followed by music by the gleo club. An address of welcome was then delivered by Rev. Inches and re- sponded to by P. Van Fleet. The guests then regaled themselves upon the roasted ox which had been turned upon a apit. Besides this rare treat ofm..; ef there was a never failing supply of refroshments of every de- seription to cater to the wants of the moat voracious. By noon the Fremont band came in and discoursed some of the finest music that has ever been heard in the state. After dinner the master of the ceremonies, A. B, Ellwood, ecalled the concourso around the grand stand and introduced as orator of the day Hon. John M. Thurston, of Omaha, Mr. Thurston occupied some forty minutes in a discourse that abounded in humor, sarcasm and funny stories. His hits were well received and crea- tel considerable merriment. Then followed a toast in response to Saun- ders county by J, P, Scoit. Mr. Scott was very eloquent and delivered a glowing tribute to the thrift and in- dustry of the settlers of Saunders county and the fertility, productive- néss and resources of the region com- prising Saunders and Dodge counties. Mr. J. Mason Smith responded to the toast of North Bend in an exhaustive review of the carly history of the set- tlement of Dodge county and North Bend in particular, closing with somo verses composed by | ¥ himself. The next in order was tho toast the U. P. railroad responded to by Myr. Charles J. Green, of Omaha. r. Green, or rather Col. Green, was more than usually eloquent. He re- urned some of the salliesof Thurston, and dwelt upon the grandeur of the western country and its development \{y the railroads, and especially by the nion Pacific. Hon. George W. E. Dorsey responded to the toast of Dodge county in a brief and able ad- adréss. Mr. Ellwood then introduced Hon. E. Rosewater, of THE Bxg, who addressed himself especially the farmers, and reviewed some of the problems that are now most foremost in tating the producing and industrial olasses of thestate. Thespeech making ooncluded the people wended their way back to the town, where they witnessed 2 rare, grotesque spectacle of & procession of masked men and boys: band were admirably equipped for the vecasion, and the spectators enjoyed their antics hugely. During the even- ing the young peopls enjoyed them- selvos in dancing on tho platform erected for that purpose in the grove, and the Bohemians had a dance on the faland in the Platte, near the bridge, Upon the whole, the occasion will be long remembered by the people of Saunders and Dodge counties, The barbacue was well managed in every respoct. The president, Mr. Kil- wood, -and the marshals, Messrs, D. K. Wilson, of Saundors, and O, W, Hyatt of Dodge aro enti- tled to much credit for the admirable manner in which they maintained or- der and managed the entertainment. Among the notables on the grounds were Col. Colton, the first general passenger agent of the Union Pacifio, now president of the national bank at Galesburg, who has a large landed interest 1n Suunders county and in the Platte valley. Congressman Valen- tine, who was booked for a speech, did not put in an appearnnce until after the meeting had broken up, but he did a great deal of hand shuking and baby kissing. The Evil Effects of the War Over- come. Srevens Porvt, Wis,, | April 16, 1881, H. H. Wagser & Co,: Birs—The privations of the war imposed upon me what physicians call ‘‘¢hronic” diarrhea, Your Safe Kidney and Liver Cure is the only wmedicine that ever did me any good. 14d-1w Seri W, Horxstep, — General G, K. Warren, N. Y. Evening Post, General Gouverneur Kemble War- ren died ac his home in Noewport last evening at 6 o'clock, Since the deci- sion of the Court of Inquiry in regard to his conduct at the battle of Five Forks he has manifested symptoms of at mental depression, He was con- ned to his bed for one week, and al- though he has been a sufterer from a disease which would ultimately have caused his death, it is said that the event was hastened by the Court of nquiry decision. He was born in Cold Spring, N. Y., January 8, 1830, and was appointed to o (’\'en Point cadetship in 1846, from which institution he was graduated in 1850, He was assigned to the corps of topographical engineers, and for five years engaged in surveys in Mississippi, Ohio, and other western ates. In 1800 he was ussigned as chief topographical engineer to the charge of the Bioux expedition, and was engaged in the action of Blue Wa- ter on September 3, of that year, He was in charge of the reconnoisance in Dakota territory in 1856-7, He was appointed assistant professot of math. ematics at the West Point military aosdemy on August 29, 1850, and took the chair as professor of mathe- matics on November 3, 1850, He held the position until Agril 27, 1861, when the breaking out of therebellion afforded him an opportunity for more Active service. Genoral Warren was appoinsed Lieutenant-Colonel of the Durvee Zouaves of New York. He took part in the operations around Baltimore 1n 1861 and 1862 He was then pro- moted to the command of his regi- ment and took part in the siege of Yorktown. Soon after he became brigade commander, For gallant sor- vioes at the battle of Gaines’s Mill he was commissioned Brevet.Lisutenant- Oolonel of the Army. As Brigadier (General of Volunteers he took part in the battle of Autietam. Tn February, 1863, he becams Chief Topographical Engineer of{the Army of the Potomac. For gallant conduct at the battle of Geottysburg he was commissiched Bre- veot Colonel in the Regular Army. Hy was in temporary com- mand of the Second Corps army_of the Potomacin 1864, After the demonstration upon the enemy across Morton’s ford, on February 0, 1864, General Warren sovered ~ his connection with the Second corps, and from March 24, 1864, to April 1, 1865, was in command of the Fifth corps, army of the Potomac, This brought him into the Richmond cam- paign. Ho was engaged in the battle of Five Forks on April 1, 1865, where his unfortunate misunderstanding with Lieutenant General Sheridan led to his being deprived of his command. Some two years ago General Warren requented a inilitary court of inquiry rolative to his conduct at the battle of Five Forks. The finding of the court justified General Sheridan’s action in removing him, because of the specific orders given Gieneral Sheridan before the uction. The gallant and meritori- ous services at the battle of Bristol station he received a commission as brevet brigadier-general, United States Army, and for gallant and meritorious services ‘‘on the field dur- ing the rebellion” he was commission- ed brevet major-general United States army, He resigned his volunteer commission on May 27, 18G5, and came to this city, where he passed tho ensuing year in preparing maps and reports of his campaigns, As su- perintending engineer he attended to the surveys of the upper Mississippi and its tributaries from July, 18 May, 1870. Since then he has taken part in a number of engineering pro- jects. Ho had been a member of -the advigory council of the harbor com- missioners of the state of Rhode Inland since 1878, and had resided in Newport since the close of the war, Ho leaves & widow and three small children, Do Not Be Deceived.
