2 ’,' » . — BAGGED AT LAST. A Preacher, Prayer and Printer, Who May Soon Learn An- other Trade, Arrest of J. H. Rockwell alias ‘‘Rev. J. Harvey.” A Systematio Conrse of Swindling “Men of the Cloth.” A few days ago a BEr reporter, who was riding on the street car to the U, P. depot, sat near J. B. Furay, the speoial agent of the postoffice depart- ment, and heard him say to a friend, “P've bagged the fellow at last and will expose him in a few days.” As the major is rather close mouthed in regard to his business this was all that was known as to who the untor- tunate fellow was who had been bagged by the hunter of criminals, un- til this morning, The details are thus glven by The Lincoln Journal: QUITE A SENSATION was caused about 5 o’clock yesterday evening in the book deparument of The Journal mmf}“% by the appear- ance of Major J. B. Furay, the well known postal inspector and detective, The major scanned the boys at work very closely for a few moments and then walked over to a new hand, answering to the name of J. H. Rock- well. The major tapped his man on the shoulder and quietly informed him that he was wanted at the office of the United States district attorney at once. Mr. Rockwell naturally inquired for what purpose, and was told that he was charged with system- atically robbing MEN OF THE CLOTH throughout the country, and that the facts in the case were now in the hands cf the United States district attorney. Rockwell accompanied the officer 1o the office and was soon con- fronted with evidences of his guilt, in the shape of postoffice orders, let- ters from his victims, ete. The following advertisement, in- serted in The New York Observer, The Standard, of Chicago; The Evan- gelist, of New York, The Interior, of Chicago, and The Literary World, of Boston, is THE CAUSE OF MIS PRESENT TROUBLE. Harvey, Omaha, Neb, Reference: State National Bank, this city. “The books were offered at such low figures that SCARCELY A CLERGYMAN or literary gentleman in the land who read the advertisement but wauted a set of the books, As a consequence, letters containing postoflice orders, drafts, eto., came pouring in upon him with every mail; they came trom New York, Boston, Chicago, and in fact from almost every state in the Union, He got the postoffice orders, but never forwarded the books, aud the trouble was to get eome one to identify him as “REV. J, HARVEY." *‘In this section of the country he is known only as the Rev. J. H. Rockwell, a congregational minister in ch.‘;-&e of congregations in Wilber and DeWitt; at least the circular from the agent of the Burlington & Missouri at Wilber thus states, and says he is en- titled to the reduced prices usually accorded to clergymen by the railroad companis THE HISTORY OF THE CASE, In the middle of July the major was called upon by prominent citizens of Omaha, who had received letters from eastern friends Informing them that they had been victimized by a fraud traveling under the aseumed name of Rev. J. H, Rockwell, The major took the matter in hand, and work at it for days and nights, but was unable to unearth the clerical ras- cal. On the 17th of July he GOT A POINTER, * and by following it up struck the trail in one of the small towns in Iowa, From this place he followed Rockwell to Pacific Junction, where he heard him pleadivg with the postmaster for a registered letter that he had ordered forwarded from some other point. The postmaster insisted that he should procure some responsible man who could identity him as the only orig- inal Rov. J. Harvey, From Pacific Junction he WENT TO OMAHA and from that city to Lincoln, arriv- iug here in the night, one day this week—with the major traveling on the same train with him For days he has been shadowed in this city, followed to the banks of the city, to the express office and to the post- office. During the past day or two the web has been slowly uathering about him until yesterdsy wvening, when THE TRAP WAS SPRUNG and the *‘Rev. J. Harvey" was safe in the clutches of the law, An exami- nation of the effects found upon his person showad that Rackwell and Harvey were one and the same per- son. A postoftice order for 83, paya- ble to *‘Rev. J, Harvey,” and lettors signed Harvey and Rockwell in the same handwriving were among the evidence of his guilt. The prisoner was taken before United States Dis trict Attorney Lambertson, where he wes charged ‘with using the United | 3} States mails FOB THE PURPOSE OF RASCALITY, Judge Mason appeared for the pris- oner and asked lol;P:nd received -l::uuv tinuance of the case until this worn- ing st ten o'clock. Rockwell is a printer by trade, and The Jourpal boys say & good one; bt of late years he has been dividing his time between reaching, and praying and printing, ast Thursday evening he attended the Congregational church in this city and took part in the prayer meeting, rendering A FERVENT AND ELOQUENT PRAYER to the Creator for the many blessings he had received. Maj. Furay informs us that the man has been sorely troub- led for some time. A fow days since he sent Mr. a trailer, to , follow and him. Rockwell started off on the rail- road track and walked for miles; then wheeled around and returned to the cily on a very fast walk, The letters received by the major trom various clergymen and litercry men, asking information about the ‘‘Rev. Harvey,"” would fill A PECK MEASURE. The amounts the rascal has recoived are generally small, not exceeding in oach £3.60. Rockwell has a very ninisterial appearance, dresses very neatly, wears glasses and isa very fluent talker. When before the Uni- ted States district attorney last night he seemed to realize that he was in a very bad box, and could hardly speak when United States Marshal Hastings started toward the jail with him, A pure strengthening tonic, free from whiskey and alcohol, cures dyspepsia, and similar diseases, It has never been equaled. Brown's Iron Bitters, RAIL RECORD. kiqualized Rates to Pointsin Nebraska on Seaboard Business. Commissioner George H. Daniels, of the Iowa Trunk Line association, has just issued an important circular reiating to the equalization of rates on business from the seaboard via the Iowa trunk lines to competing points in Nebraska, The rates to Lincoln, Neb., were heretofore lower than the rates to Fremont, Neb. The Chicago & Northwestern, which has a direct outlet to Fremont, claimed that the Fremont rates should be the same a the Lincoln rates, as the dis- tance srom the Missouri river to both points is about the same. Accordingly the Iowa trunk lines ave ngruuf‘lu make the rates to both points alike. The mew rates from Ohicago to Lincoln and Fremont on business from the eeaboard will be as follows: First class, 95 cents per 100 pounds; second, 77 cents; third, 56 cents; fourth, 40 cents; sugar, L. C. L., 40 cents; machinery or agricultu- ral implements, O, L. rcleased, 42 conts; Portland cement, C. L, 20} cents, and fresh fruit, C. L., 68 cents, The establishment of the above rate on sugar, molastes and syrup with- draws those articles from special class, There are also slight changes in the rates to the following places in Ne- braska: David City, Columbus, Cen- tral City, Hastings, Koarney and Norfolk. The Sensation Produced East by Our Recent Great Conflagration (?) One of our citizens received a lettor from a friend in York, Pennsylvania, in which the writer makes reference to the “‘great fire” which was reported in Omaha several days sgo. He says: ‘‘After getting your letter I went further up the street from the post- office, and passing a bulletin board, saw ‘Great Fire in Omaha, Expect it will Sweop the Whole City!" 1t made me feel sad and sny, ‘poor George! But it has turned out to be a great hoax, That operator had ought to be hung toa telegraph post, with fifty wires running around him, with as many streaks of lightning playing ‘hide and go seek’ awnong them as there are wires. It produced such a sensation in York, that in one of our Lutheran churches, (Dr. Silly's) at the Sabbath morning prayer meeting, a speech was made and prayers were offered for the ‘Omaha sufferers,” What a sell! W I suppose you denizens of that ci zed heathen country, needed the anyen of us pious people of York! f you did not have a fire, and did not need our prayers now, you will need them some day, when there will be a conflagration! 3 An effective medicine for kidney disenses, low fevers and nervous pros- tration, and well worthy of a trial, is Brown'’s Iron Bitten — - o THE GRAND ARMY, Rallroad Rates to the Grand Island kncampment, The following are the reducod rates of the Union Pacific to the Grand Army Encampment at Grand Island, from the points named, which include stations on the main line and branches: Council Bluffs .l: lli?b Dunecan 150 Silver Creek., 180 575 Clark’s, . 185 525 Central City., 90 400 Chapman .. 50 400 St. Joseph.... 760 400 Troy..... . 716 87 Troy Junction, 7 16 . 880 Severauce . 85 800 80 9 210 110 160 Buda, 125 i Ku&may 115 « 100 Plum Creek,,, 2 85 70 North Platte n 3 S Wood fiiver,:: 63 e In connection with the Union Pa- cific the Missouri Pacific will sell round trip tickets from the following ints: _Atchison, ‘§7:60; Falls City, $0.40; Kausas Oity, $8.00; Leavenworth, Eaton’s son as|Su watch | § £0.10; Louisville, 16; Auburn, $6.5 £6.50. £4.80; Dunbar, Sheridan, The B. & M. railroad will sell ex- | cursion tickets to (irand Tsland and return from points named at the fol« lowing rates. A Street Car Driver Saves His Car and Passengers From Wreck. Aboat 8 o'clock yesterday there was a close call for a fatal accident on lower Tenth street. Red line car No, 6 had just left the terminus, near Bell's, and started down hill to- ward the railroad crossing, before reaching which it is always customary to stop. The rain had made the track slippery, and when the driver applied the brake the wheels slid on the track, and seeing that the car would not hold, the driver threw it from the track. Even this did not hold it, and at that | g moment an engine drawing several freight cars was scen approaching, coming up the hill at a good speed. There were four passengers in at the time, three gentlemen and a lady, and seeing a collision 1mminent they all made a bold break for terra firma, Two of the men leaped off of the rear glntform and another tried to escape y the front door but was unable to de 8o as there were no steps on that ond of the car, The lady started to go out the back way but was unable to get out owing to the jolting of the car, ‘When the driver saw the situation, instead of jumping off to save his own life he stuck to his post, or rather his stool, and whipping up the team, made a vigorous race for safety to cross the plank crossing ahead of the engiue. Although off the track, the fout was accomplished, the engine just escaping a colljsion. The car was soon put on the track, and the pansengers reloaded, vory much mud- died and shaken up, but not hurt, The driver deserves the credit for saving the car and the lives of his poassevgers, and from the latter he geots it in full, - Every oolor of the Diamond Dyes is perfect. ~See the samples of the col- ored cloth at the druggists, Un- equalled for brilliancy.
