Candidate For the Ninth District. The Conventiu; Wf;ncef¢|l and the Platform a Stir- ring Oue. The Doings in Detail. In accordance with the published call the greenback-labor party held a convention at the court house in this city yesterday, at 11 o’clock, to nom- inatea candidate for the Ninth congres- sional district. H. C. Ayers, of The Hastings Plaindealer, called the con- vention to order, and read the call. There were about twenty-five present, the number of delegates to which the convention was entitled being forty- two, by the state distribution, Mr. Ayers, in his opening, made a —Seaman has removed his paper, book and stationery stock to No. 405 Broadway, next door to Harkness, Orcutt & Co, —Water pipes are being laid in the vicinity of the corner of Eighth street and Bixth avenue, —Justice Abbott yesterday tied the knot which made Augusta Granstian to become Mrs, Carl Peterson, ~Mueller bas bought the finest 1.t (about one hundred and fifty cases) of toys and holiday goods ever brought to the west for his wholesale trade, —Nettie Harris, the Streetville shooter, has not been found by the.officers, who want her for another assanlt, It is said that she has skipped. —Thomas Brown was yesterday lifted out of the common list of drunks, by being noted as the only one before the superior court yesterday. It was the fate of all reform- ers. It had been charged that the greenback party was simply the out. come of hard times, It was time that hard times had caused the people to study questions of economy and finance, but the principles which the party advocated were as essential to times of prosperty as times of depres- sion, he greenbackers had won few successes 8o far as office- getting was concerned, but they were not after spoils, but were sup- porting grinnipleu which they believed right. He hoped that the convention would nominate a man of clear rec- ord, one who had not bought his nom- ination, and that the action of the convention would be harmontous and right. Mr. Ayers, by the request of the committee, then called Mr. Koeler, of Fremont, to the front as temporary chairman. Mr. W. O. Cadwell, of Harrison oounty, was chosen tempor- ary secretary. On motion of Mr. Stanley, of Cass county, a committee of three were chosen on credentials, those appointed being Mr. Disbro, of Cass county, Mr. Potter, of Shelby, and Dr, Sperry, of Montgomery. #On motion of Mr. Buxtem, of Har- rison county, a committee was named on permanent organization, the fol- lowing being chosen: Mr. Harris, of Avoca, Mr. Stanley, of Lewis, Mr. Rensimer, of Mills, On motion of Mr, Ayres a commit- tee of one from each county was chosen on resolutions, as follows: against Mrs, Herman, who lives on Eighth street, between Avenue C and D, charging her with cruelty to animals, It is claimed that she has been annoyed by dogs prowl- ing about her premises that she used hot water in driving them away, and thus soalded two canines horribly, The owners of the dogs evidently mean for her to gt redress in some other way than by cruelty to the animals. —Lust Monday evening the many friends of Miss Cora Marble gave her a pleasant surprise in honor of her Nine- teenth birthday, at her home on Tenth av- enue, After recovering from her surprise all were entertained in a very agreeable manner, Music, dancing and various gamer were 1ndulged in until a lato hour, Mies Cora was also the 1ecipient of many elegant presents from her admiring friends —C. F. Heisler, having got mad about the way a friend of his dropped a fat roll of money in & game the other night, in- terfered, and was promptly ejected from the room, Yesterday, in sweet revenge he entered complalpt against Dan McGinnies and his dealfr, John ¥, Brown, charging them with gambling, Brown turned the tables by entering com- plaint against Heirler for gambling. So the war has opened. The cases will be beara to-day, ~This afternoon the Union Pacific nine :_nd Council Bluffs club are to have a ipecial game at the base ball park of the latter. The amount of ill-deserved abnse ‘which bas been heaped upon the Council Bluffs club by base ballists of Omaha has stirred up the boys here and their friends, and they will doall they can to win the honors of the day from their strong com petitors, It will be a lively gome and worthy of a big crowd, ~The *“‘colonel” has returned from his eastern trip, and finds that there is a larger aumber of anti-Anderson republicans than he supposed, He becomes alarmed and cracks his whip in a threatening way he yelps for the disaffected ones to get into line, *‘We would not wish to our worst enemy & worse fate politically than the bolting of Major Auderson will induce. No one can be expected to be honest and trusted by the party who betrays it in the hours when co-operation against the pub- lic enemy s peculisrly desirable, Tue gratification of revenge niay be sweet, but the copeequence will be biiter The “colonel” must judge others by his own timidity if he fancies that such threats coming from him will frighten any one, He and his benchman have forced Ander- son upon the party by unfuir weans, and then by use of bonds and all only get him nowinated by ove msjority. Now this same Chapwan has the audacity to erack his whip over the back of the party, and thieaten all who will not submit. The threat will scare no o-e, and only seems to wmake the “colouel” ridiculous, Of course Chapman is desperate. He wmust secure the United States marshalship for another term, or take a terrible tumble, but in his desperation he should have a little more judgment than to try to frighten voters to support the military vin he has set up, e If Nearly Dead alter taking some highly puffed up stuff, with long testimonials, turn to Hop Bitters and have no fear of any Kiduey and Urinary troubles, Bright's Dicease, Diabetes or Liver Complaint. Zenos Brown also urged that labor should be represented and its rights protected. In view of these facts he presented the name of Abraham Harris, whom he described vot os a farmer, but a butcher, who hal spent time and money in woiking for the principles of the party, Mr. Moredith was in favor of Mr. Harris on some accounis but did not believe in puiting such good material 10 tho frout to be slaughtered, and doubted whether he wau cloquent encuch on the stump Lo contest with tlo I quent speakers of other partics Mr H. The nomination of Dr. Hatton was then made unanimous, which called fourth the first applause the conven- tion had indulged in, The following platform was then adopted, as reported by the committee appointed for that purpose, 1. The national party of the Ninth congreasional district of Towa, in con- vention assembled, heartily endorse the platform of the party as adopted by the state convention at Des Moines on the Oth of June, 1882, 2. We denounce the repeal of the no-called granger railroad law, fixing maximum rates in this state, as an odious crine against the state, where- by a wholesome measure of protection to the people was stolen by republican politicians at the instance of a railway lobby, and for the benefit of railway corporations, 3. We therefore demand that the governor shall call an immediate ses- sion of the general assembly and recommend the abolition of this ab- ominable railroad commission, and the restoration of the old law, fixing maximum tariffs for railroad freight and passengers and for the enactment of such other legislation as the pres- ent emergency may require and the people generally and urgently de- maud, 5. We pledge ourselves to go before the people of this district and thor- oughly expose the railroad abuses herein denounced, and that we will do our utmost to convey to the public the information upon these subjects which the old party papers studiously, persistently and wilfully conceal. 8.
