e il T S T — o S S THE DAILY BEE: THURSDAY, AUGUST 3 18 e e S e THE TRIRD PARTY. The imported Cause of the Sache Imbroglio. A QGay Gentleman from Los Angeles, How the'Friend Became an Enemy and Wooed the Wife, and the Hus- band Punished the Friend. San Francieco Chronicle, This shocting by Samuel L. Sachs of his wife, at theiv residence on Van Ness avenue, Wednesday morning, countinued to be a topic of interest yesterday, and comments and specu- Iations regarding the root of the trouble were numerous. A Chrol reporter started on a tour of investi gation early yesterday morning, and by noon had traced the origin of the attempted assassination to the door of Samuel C, Cook, a dapper visitor from Lgs Angeles, who, until Monday night last, resided with his wife at 522 Sut. ter street. Cook s well known in Los Angeles as a pleasure hunter who i rather unscrupulous in his uests, His parenta reside in the east, and it is said furnish him with a monthly allowance of about §200 for his living expenses. A few years since he married one of four sisters in Los pair of sidewhiskers, butjwas wauble to gsin admittance, Sunday morning Officer Weathr.rwax encowntered him on Kearney street, looking haggard and wild, wa if he had been drinking, heavily, Sachs talked freely of his encounter with Cook, and related the details with an evident relish. His resort during the time intervening be- twoen the affray and the shooting of his wife is not known, but his return home on the morning of the attempt- ed murder is stated to be due to a re- ort reaching his ears of Cook's al- ragnfinnn concerning his wife. Cook has failed to make his appearance since receiving his injuries, and a re- porter who called at 522 Sutter street yesterday was informed that he had gone away. Mrs. Cook, however, wasseen by an iuquirer, and stated that her husband was not badly injur- ed, and in fact had not received one- half the punishment he deserved for his neglect of her. The Iady's eyes snapped as she made the remark, and Cook's further punishment will surely come if she has anything tojdo withit., MR, AND MRS, SBACHS, Mrs. Sachs was resting rather easi- ly yesterday, the wound in the arm causing little pain. Her nervous sys- tem is badly shattered; however, and it will probably be days before she will be able to be out. Sachs himself is reported considerably under the weath- or, his relatives yesterday stating that the attending physician had forbidden any one to sce him. He occupies a a to an estate bringing income of between $300 and $400 monthly. This, added to his own resources, enabled the pair to live in fair style,. Some five months since thoy left Los Angeles and took up their residence at the address men- tioned. FAST LIVING, Even 8500 a month here proved in- adequate to pay the expensesof Cook’s fast life, and one quiet afternoon not three months ago he arose from a poker game in a first-class Market- street hotel with his pockets innocent of cash and with his fine gold watch and chain and diamond ring pledged to another player for nearly $250. Provious to this he had formed young Sachs’ acquaintance and had grown to be a tolerable frequent visitor at the Van Ness-avenue mansion. Mrs, Sachs and himself becoming particu- larly fast friends, In his temporary impecuniosity, therefore, Cook turned to Sachs for aid, requesting a loan of $260 with which to redeem his valu- ables. Sachs presumably declined, for within a day or two Cook inform- ed an intimate friend that a million- aire had refused to lend him $260 and he was going to get even. Witha little encouragement, he unfolded the entire plot, only holding back the names of the intereated parties, His l)mpo-ilion. it is averred, was nothing leas than to deliberately ruin Sachs and his family. How well he suc- ceeded in his plans is already known. His boasts of conquest were made openly last week, and one of his state- ments reaching the ears of Sachs last Saturday afternoon, led to his return- ing home in the evening and accusing }(l;il ;lffl of the grossest infidelity with ook, USATION AND DENIAL, This she indignantly denied and a quarrel followed, which ended in her receiving the beating, of which men- tion has already been made. A truck- man who was passing the place heard the unfortunate woma creams, and he notified Officors Weatherwax, Clarkson and Wells, whom he en- countered a block from the house, in- forming them that some woman was being murdered. The trio entered the house together, admittance being granted thera by Mrs, Bachs, who was at one end of the hall, within a foot or two of the door, while Sachs was at the other. Mrs, Sachs was bleeding slightly from a wound on the side of her head, near the temple, which she at once informed the officers had been inflicted by Sachs, The latter laughed nervously at this statement, and re- marked to the officers: *Don’'t mind her, boys; she's been drinking and hurt herself, There has been no trouble here.” The officers did not see any blow struck, and could not sts. After helping Mrs, nto her bedroom they took their departure, preceded only a tew seconds by Sachs, who left them al- most immediately on reaching the street. Mrs. Sachs was unaware of her husband’s departure, she states, and as soon as she recovered her self- ession she dispatched a message o 622 Sutter street for Cook, stating that she wanted to see him immedi- ately. Her statoment yestorday was to the effect that the message was for both Cook and his wife, her intention being to confront them with Sachs and have his charges of criminality made in their presence. THE MARITAL AVENGER, The bearer of theinvitation reached No. 522 shortly after 8 o'clock, and at once became aware that something was wrong. On receiving an answer to his ringhe hurriedly entered Cook’s room and found that individual lying on the floor, receiving an unmerciful thrashing from Sachs, who kept him quiet by menancing him with a re. markably ugly-looking revolver, while he stood over and kicked him, The messenger wasted little time in pre. liminaries, but, springing forward, rescued Cook from the clutches of the vengeful Bachs, Cook seated himself on & chair in one corner, without say- ing a word, his attention being entire- 1y occupied with his numerous facial wounds and disfigurations, Both eyes were blackened and rwollen, and his nose, one cheek and mouth wore evi- dences of his punishment, He re- fused to answer any questions, and Was r:srewnted by his wife, and the landlady, whose uninteligible volubili- tsy more than atoned for his reticence, achs also was perfectly willing to tell wll he knew, as well as a considerable quantity of his suspicioun, His pro- position, it appears, had been to com- pel Cook at the muzzle of his revolver tomake @ confession, but, although the Los Angeles lothario had been brought to his knees, he would make neither denial nor acknowledgement. A FIEKCE ATTACK, Failing in his object, his rage Jed him to kick the kueeling man in the face, following it up with a storm of blows, until arrested by the wmessen- ger. The latter led Sachs out of the room and into the hall, whero ho re- chamber in the residence of his his father and is carefully guarded from reporters. In the police court yesterday morning Mr. Sharpe ap- peared as his counsel and obtained a continuance of the case until the 7th prox, A friend of both himself and wife stated yesterday that all sem- blance of affection between the pair had been lost long ago, their difficulty dating back at least two years. T. B. Shannon, Mrs, Sachs’ father, has re- turned to the city and is with his daughter at the Sachs residence, on Van Ness avenue Not For a Fortune. ‘‘Phew” T wouldn’t marry her if she'd a fortune, Poor girl, she'd be all rightif she took SrrING BLOSSOM, the best thing in the world for offensive breathing, Price 50 cents, trial bottles 10 cents augl-dlw SPIRIT SPRING. One of the Wonders of Western Kansas, Beloit Gazetto The traveler over Western Kansas impressed with the immensity of the plains, which derive an intereet from their nakeaness, and possess in some degree tho solemn grandeur of the ocean. Nature has not forgotten to cast here and there a wonder, made more wonderful by its ectire 1solation from multiplied curiosities. The Spint Spring, which is situated on the Central Branch railroad, three mileg from Cawker City and sixteen miles from the beautiful city of Beloit, is of twofold interest. With its natural embellishments, and the lovely yet sav- age romance, its ‘fame is far-reaching. Withal, there aro few who are really acquainted with the leaf which has been torn from Time's old history and given to man, There are 286 acres of land surrounding which is owned by a company of eight gentlemen from Philadelphia, A steady work of im- proving has been carried on for several months, The spring is in the center of amound ona level plamn. The base of the mound is three thousand eight hundred and sixty feet in cir- cumference, fifty-five feet high, and has a summit of four hundred feet in diameter, from outside to outside, rootly, lovel, admitting » earriaca s:ive around the margin of thespring. On the south and eastern portion of the mound great black masses of vol- canic rock lay heaped in irregular piles, telling the bystander in voiceless tongues that once they heaved and girt in untold fury, and long for free- dom eparation from their eternal resting pl The spring is twenty feet deop, sixty-five feet in diameter, and bowl shaped. This immense cauldron has been emptied of its con- tents by phon, and found to have a porus sand and gravel bottom, with fiftoen large flowing springs and num- berless small ones. An iron rod thirty feat long was easily thrust downward through this perforated base; hence, has arisen the idea of its being bottomless. The capacity of the pring is 13,645 barrels. The water is salty to the taste, and closely resembles the famous bit- ter water of Fredrishall, Germany. Numberless relics were found in the spring, of which were three pepper box pistols, bows and arrows, five human skulls and bones of the human body, twenty buffalo heads, and many bones of the wild animals of the plains, All those are in a state of perfeot petrifaction, @ thin orusting having formed in and outside of the gunbarrels, ‘I'heskulls are in a like condition, save the teeth made more suggestive of the inhuman deeds by the socketless eyes that glare in hideous silence at you, Professor Patrick, of the state university, visited this curiosity and pronounced it an extinct guyser. In proof of this a great amount of soot, carbonate iron and other volcanic matter was found in the spring, showing great hoat had existed at one time, Before the curbing was built arcund the margin of the spring the water would flow freely over the mound once in every twenty-four hours, It was thought that the ebb and flow was governed by the ocean tide. Upon investigation the flow was found to be irregular, and not at stated inver- vals, as it would be if govern- ed by the tide, Gentle reader, the furies of that geyser aro not yet chained, Think you that water does mnot press downward with an unestimated weight! Yot it comes up, flows over and dances gaily down, loses itselt in the loose pebbles at the foot of the mound, and 18 never heard of again, Nothing is left to explain to the curious its hiding place; nothing, but a know- ledge wrappad in an unexplicable mystery. The grounds surrounding this natural curiosity are to be laid off in lovely walks and delightful drives, A splendid hotel, with threo fronts, three storics high and 100 feet deep, mognificent dancing pavilions, re- froshment rooms and bath rooms will invite fatigued and weary strangers to lieved him of his revolver, and then put him oul of the house, BSachs, it is said on tolerably good authority, returned to the house again about midnight, disguised with a wig and & a renewal of lost vitality, A Black Squatter's Dignity, Detroit Free Press, Fifteen milos out of Chattanooga on the Bridgeport road I came upon a negro squatter. The cabin was a structure of poles which a man eould have pushed over, and the roof was simply a lot of straw and weeds and bushes thrown upon the ratters and held down by large limbs, The one room was not over twelve feet square, and in this, with no floor but the earth, lived a family of nine. There were two straw-beds, one chair, one old ta- ble, three plates, one knife, one fork, two spoons and a bowl. It had been raining, and part of the earthy floor was afjmud-puddle. The family had about five pounds of meal and three or four of bacon, and of all the patches one ever saw the greatest show was right there, The old man had thirteen patches on one leg -of his trousers, eleven on the other, seven on his vest, and his cotton shirt was patched in a dozen places with red, yellow and white and blue woolen, The old woman’s dress locked like a crazy quilt, and two of the boya had only one trouser leg apiece. ““Grreat Scota! but how do you live!” I asked while one of the boys was watering the horse, “‘Lib, sah—how does we 1ib?" re- peated the old man, “Well, sah, we is gainin’ on it right smart,’” T reckon its gwine to be a good y'ar fur poo’ folks, ’ ““What do you raise?” “‘Chill'en an’ dogs, sah!” he soberly replied, “Do you work any!” “‘Only when I feels like it.” “‘And this is all your furniturei” “Well, p'raps dar’ may be a cha’r out behind de cabin.” *‘And these are all the clothes you haye!” ““Yes, sah, 'cept one o’ my ole hats on de roof.” “‘And you_call this living, do you?’ “See heah, sir,” he began as he rose up from his seat on a log near the doorstep, ‘‘’pears to me like you was inquarin’ a leetle tvo much! We doan’ advertise to keep no fust-class hotel heah, an’ if you doan' like de way we fling ourselves aroun’ you'd better be sailin’ along down de road!
