Murphy tried to speak again, but his feelings were too much for him, He rushed back to the houso, and ex olaimed, ‘‘Alex, there's nrnflcnl teamp down thero, fishing the pond dry, and he won't budge for me. Give ma leave, and I'll thump him as he eits.” At these words Berry jumped up like a madman, grabbed a Wincheater ritle, and mado a rush for the pond, Badlam running after him, yelling, “Shoot the beggar! Fult, shoot him! T'll troat thess tramps a lesson.” Tho doetor looked from Murphy to the running men in amazement Murphy, neatly stunned with the ter- m turn of affairs, gasped out, *‘Stop ‘em! doctor, stem 'em!” Thien the dodtor snil Murphy start- od down and overtook Berry and Bad- lam just as the former raisod the rifle to aim at the distaut fisherman, silently whipping the placid carp pond. “For heaven's sake, ttop this nonsense!” the doctor cried, grasping the riflo. “Don’t you interfere, sir,” fiercoly yolled Badlam to the apparently hor- ror stricken doctor, “‘Shoot the beg gar, Fult, give him one in the head for luok.” “Good Lord, Alex., what are you about?” exclaimed Murphy, white and frightened, “Lot mo give it to the rascal!” Berry exclaimed, breaking away from the doctor. Badlam and Fult. Berry, is being told in the clubs, on ‘Change and in the green rooms with so many yariations, that for the sake of history the only true and correct account is here given Murphy and Berry wore asked, with Dr. Brown, to go up to Badlam's ranch for a quiet filfilng jaunt over the Fourthof July holi- days. Near Badlam's house he has a little carp pond, where he had fixed up a most ingenious dummy ‘‘lono fisherman.” — The stuffed figure was supplied with slouch hat, hob- natled brogans, pipe and fishing outfit. The figures sat cross-legged, holding & long bamboo pole, in con- nection with which Badlam had ex- pended his ingenuity. The butt end of the pole was cunningiy attached to a little overcast water wheel, made of oyster cans and propelled by the lit- tle streem gupplying the pond. The revolution of the water wheel caused the lono fisherman’s pols to be jerked violently out of tho water and thrown buck again at slow regular intervals, Spenkng of the pond, which Murphy had not yet seen, Badlam bewailed the troublo tramps and others cavsed him by fishing out of the pond right un- der his noge, “They are getting so Broow Corn—3h@de, o Hay=Toote, 70089 00; biled, 75 per Wood-—5 00@6 00, Wool—15@25, Butter—Creamery, 20c;1n rolls, wrap- ved, 19c; rolls not wrapped, 124c; mixed 240, colurs, 10@ 00@2 40 per dozen, Potatoes—Old, out of warket; new, 80 @90, Cabl LIVY 7ic per doz, TOCK, r(‘unl:xAI‘x(.m 3 00@ )V Julves ~5 50@6 00, Hogs— )7 00, Shee 100, Chicago Produoce. After dinner hoe happened to walk down near the pond, and suddenly stopped at jost such a sight ws his host described, Rapidly getting mad he slowly ap- proached the lone fisherman until withiu a fow feet of his back, when he yelled in a voice calculated to frighten the man into the pond: “Hello, you rascal, have you got a rmit to fish here?” I'ho lonely one did not move for a sccond, and_ then, with a sudden, un- expected jerk he lashed his pole and line over his head, the hook narrowly escaping the irate comedian’s jaw as it swung back. “Look here, you blasted fumblor,” Murphy cried, as he jumped back t escape the hook, “Say, did you hear what I said to you?” Evidently the man did not hear, for, after letting his line sink down in the placid waters, it was again, with startling suddenness switched out, Perfect and simple, 10 Pork~ Ative and m.( her; mess, 20 10@ cents at all druggists, and again thrown into the water, Choking with indiguation, Murphy | | the country will be promyptly paid for by return the lone fisherman again tossed the hook carefully out upon the water.
