HAYMAKER, Griswol WEEPING WATER A New Bank A Devotee of Bacchus Other Notes. Correspondence of The Bee, Weerisa Water, July 14 —The project that W eeping Water has long felt a desire for has now been com pleted in the way of a stable banking institution. A bank with the euphon- eous name of Commercial bank has just been organized with a cash capi tal of §50,000. The officers are as follows: Directors, C. H. Parmele, 8. M. Patterson, A. B Smith, E. W, Black of Plattsmouth, C. Schluntz, P. 8. Barnes and F. M. Wcleoty, of this place; president, P. S. Barnes; vice president, F. M. Wolcott; cashier, J. M. Robinson. The names of the directors, who are all well known to be large capitalists, and who own most of the stock, is recommendation enough for the bank. of the c shier, J. M. Robinson, is sanctioned by the entire community and will doubly insure the bank a prosperous business. Our city is strictly temperate and no saloons allowed, nevertheless occa- sionally attention is somotimes at- tracted to parties who have indulged in “a drop of the crater,” and this was the deplorable fact one evening last week: One J. C. prowled the streets with an idiotic snnle and rav- ing like a maniac to engage in a fight “with his weight in wild cats and a panther thrown in.”’ He finally saun- tered up *‘I” street to the city restau- rant, where, In the presence of ladies and gentlemen, he expressed him self in language boisterous and too disreputable to here utter. The mar- shal not being on deck, the propristor at once went to the bat, and with a sledge-hammer blow from & largo fist full of bones he came down on the huge dissipated red proboscis of the modern gladiator of the Bacchus school, which must have caused him to see more stars than there were inthe milky way; the sound of the blow was like that of a horee pulling his foot from a mud-hole. This muscular power sent him 1ntothe street prostrate, silenced the vulgar remarks and instead a dirge-like wail heard, and _elthough profoundly of Morean, Kempton, or other writer on conservative tactics he instinctively rose and initiated that masterly mancuvre wheteby much prectous bacon was saved to the coun- try. The jewelry firm of Potter & Web ster ig dissolved. Mr. J, A, Webster will remain with us and continue the business. He has employed Mr. H. Gardthausen, of St. Louis, a good workman, Mr. L. Potter leaves the city and will probably locate in Omaha, His many friends regrot to have him go. He is a pr.ctical musi- cian and many here feel indebted to The selection ignorant him for instructions in vocal music. The school board have employed Jo- sie McCoy, of Nebraska City, as prin- cipal; Miss BE. Farley intermediate, and Miss Ida Thorngate, primary, both of this place. Dr. W. 8. Richey, dentist, is at the nccordingly in pairs and mingle 1n combustion with jets of air comiug up through 1}-inch holes just under cach | conjunction of gas, The number of | gas jota is H48, | The boiler, as originally designed and built, was intended to improve upou the ordinary conditions of gas heating, but on being tried, was rojec ted, and the ordinary boiler pattern was reatored, with a few moditications in the fire-box and smoke pipe, In April lust ‘he new boiler and heating apparatus were satisfactorily tesied, and the last of May the complete en gine was delivered to the Erie road After a fow standing trials it was setat work on the freight busii until yesterday, when it entered on its call ing as a passenger engine, Very little time is now consumed in firing up; probably not more thau half the aver- age with ordinary locomotives. Rapid motion has been an aid to the fire, which formerly it tended to suppress. The dimensions of the eugine are as follows: Weight with all on board, 48 tons; length over all, 62 feet; diam oter of driving wheels, b feot; cyliu- ders, 17 by 24 inches. © i an’ tind » healthier family inNew York State, ) Oct. b, 188 jullo-dlw End of the Strike at the Irondale ‘Works, o Tribune, 1 arrangement was mado yoster- day botween the Calumet Iron & Steel company and their striki workmen by which work will ba re- sumed Monday. During tho day the situation was much as during the past week since the arrival of the non- union men Monday. The streets were thronged, and everybody was busy discussing tho state of affairs and watching the movements of the *'black sheep” inside the grounds. Just before noon geveral of the non- union men came to the gates and were met by tho strikers, when a long and friendly diecussion wae held. At the close of the meeting the non-union men declared that after dinner they would come out, and either join the strikers or leaye the town. Atter dinner they did as agrecd, and marched quietly out of the ground and mingled with the crowd. About 3 p. m. the Amaluamated association committes were called to- goether and a secret session of an hour and a half held, in the course of which a proposition of settlement was mado by the company. What trans- pired in the meeting cannot boe learned, but it is certain that tho proposition was accepted. It was im possible to learn the terms of the agreement, but as was remarked by one of the company, “It is satisfac tory to all concerned.” The men said that the meeting was asecret one and its proceedings could not, for the present at least, be di- vulged. It is probable, however, that the basis of settlement is a compro- mise siwilar to the one at Bay View. Ascene of the wildest rejoicing fol- lowed the announcement of the news, and the vicinity of the gates to the mills was black with a cheering, hand- shaking crowd, Last night a regular jollification was held, and the company contributed towards the expenses of the evening. New York Tribune, July 12, The local train from Paterson at 1:30 p. m. via Newark to New York, carried yesterday the unusual number of 113 passengers, in four of the heavy old pattern Erie railway cars. The excess was due to curiosity to ob- serve the working of the new hy- drogen or water-gas locomotive en- gine, the *‘C. Holland,” which on this occasion made its maiden trip as a pas- senger engine on the regular time table of the New York, Lake Krie & Western railroad. Similar curiosity drew crowds to the several points to see ‘its departure. i's stope, and its arrival in Jersey A the latter terminus the exgine was honored with the privilege of ruuning iuto the pas. senger depot, whencus “‘wheeled smok- ers are invariably diverted by means of a flging switch. The smokeless funnel of the *‘C. Holland” vomited nothing into the rafters more offen- sive and dangerous than pure and snow-white clouds of vapor. But its rouring brought the whole floating pop- ulation of the yards and offices around the new arrival, In passing through the tunnel the passenger had just been regaled with a gale of cool sub- terranean air, drawn by the rapid mo- tion through wide open doors and windows, clearing out the cigar smoke and other impurities, and substituting for the customary tunnel-choke and cinder-hail a light spray of the con- densed product of hydrogen combus- tion, entirely agreeable to the senses aud to the whitest shirt-fronts. The arrival was ahead of time. The oil guage showed a cost of $2 52 for the twenty-mile run, which is not much, if any, cheaper than full rate on the long and closely managed trunk lines when coal is cheap. It is more than double the highest consumption of the “C. Holland" during the few weeks past, when it has been domng heavy reight work. The principle of the apparatus is the decomposition of wa- ter at a high heat by mingling it with a small proportion of oil, without air, in iron retorts, the hydrogen set free being instantly burned, and all the heat of both unions—the carbon with the water oxygen, and the hydrogen with the air oxygen— being confined and utilized in the boiler, making steam. The retotrs are four in number, They resemble half a peck-measure in size, and are set near the door of the furnace, a little above the level of the burners, which cover a floor about three by eight feet in extent. The burners are as pin- holes along the lengths of a close series of one inch iron pipes covering the floor of the fire chamber and connect- ed with a central gas main, which is supplied by ripu from the retorts, These pinholes being pitched toward each other in pairs, the gas-jets meet non-union men, Like Othello, his occupation was gone, Towards evening a deputation of the strikers waited upon Mr. Good- rich, president of the Hyde Park board of trustees, who wason the scene in his capacity of chief of police, and expressed their thanks to him and hig men for the considerate and gen- tlemanly manner in which they had been treated by the officers on duty at the mills, It is a noticeable fact that in the six weeks during which the strike has lasted there has been little or no dis- order at Irondale and but little drunk- enness; in fact, tho town has been as orderly as other portions of the village ot Hyde Park. A Tribune reporter called on Gen, T. T. Torrence, of the Calumet Iron & Stoel company, last evening at his residence, corner of Ellis avenue and Thirty-seventh street. To the ques- tion, “‘Do T hear correctly that the Calumet Iron & Steel company have made a settlement with ~their old men?” the Gieneral responded: “T un- derstand that Mr. Bradley and Mr. Hackney have perfected a compromise with the old men which is entirely satisfactory to both the men and the company. Iknow what this arrange- ment is, but I would prefer that either Mr. Hackney or Mr. Bradley should be the one to divulge it. I believe the settlemont is to be confidential till matters have been adjusted at Pitts- burg. The understanding is, however, that the work in tho mills will com- mence Monday next.” *‘Are the men at Trondale to abide by the decision that is to be made at Pittsburg?” “‘Not exactly, but the compact be- tween the employes and the company {iep\'mdl somewhat upon that decis- ion,” Bucklin's Arnica Balve, The Best SALVE in the world for Cuts Bruises, Sores, Ulcers, talt Rheum, Fe ver Sores, Tetter, Chapped Hands, Chil blains, Corns, and all skin eruptions, and positively cures niles, It is guaranteed to ive satisfactfon or money refunded, Price, 25 cents per box, Kor sale by C.
