A Bloody Offering on the & ltar of Ambition and Love ot Lucre, Goorge Washington Eureka Dor= soy Alrendy Fattoned For the Killing. Burns' Blister a Source of Secret An- gulsh, Though He "Smiles" in Company, Fremon To the Editor of tho oo, July 14, 1882, To a stranger unaccustomed to the ways of tho modern political oftice- seeker of this young state, he would seo but little in the actions of our lo- eal politionl aspirants to lead him to think that any very great intorest was being taken in the coming fall's cam- paign. But to the “‘old sottler” who has for years watched the secret manocuvres of these hungry individ- uals and seen the will of the people thwarted by the jobs put up at prima- rios, 1 read only too plainly the meanin, of this button-holing that is going on in our streots every day. Fremont is crowdod with men who ure perfeotly wi to encrifico them- selves to tho people of this state in the way of being clected to some fat oflico. And while the disposition on the part of these martyrs does not reach to that dizzy heighth of a “‘bloody sacrifice” it does reach tothat other extremo of a degrading Shylock- ism. Dorsey undoubtedly foels that he is to bo the greatost martyr, and in aludymu his manly intelligent coun- tenance one cannot help feeling that to_sacrifice this noble Second ward politician would be a crime second to nono in the history of the world. T might truthfully suy that there seems to be a general feeling of this kind among our citizens, and the chances are that Brother Dorsoy will be pro- served for some future occasion. Notwithstanding these never-failing signe, Brother Doroay is dotermined to show his hand and place himself rightly before the people. To do right is his highest ambition, and on this principle he has gained some notoriety, He feels very strong and exceodingly large, and,no doubt, feels that his clothes are too small for him, His cont sleeves and pantaloon legs feel too short for him, and he is con- tinually pulling down his vest. Now theso things, which seem so matter-of- fact to him, are not noticed by the people. In fact, about the only change that can be seen in Brother Dorsey is that his hat is getting too small for him, At the same time it is quite possible that his heart is also expandin, It would probably be not out of place to say that for tho last two wecks he has manifested an unbound- ed love for some of our democratic friends, This can be accounted for however, upon the grounds that he is a native of Virginia, that good old democratic commonwealth, And of course it cannot be expected that the love which Bro. Dorsoy unquestion- [ ably lind for his nativo atate and her people, has oozed out at his finger | ends in so short a time, No sir! the bluo blood of Virginia still courses through hie veins, And what matters it though this love is only manifested just bofore tho state convention it is none the loss sincere, Our able sonator, who presides over the destiny of the New York hotel, is the next man ready to sacrifice him- f. This monument of intelligence is mostly noted for the manner in which ho always turns up on the win- ning side. This cannot be attributed to luck or chance. No, no! He is undoubtedly controlled by a clear head and sound judgment, and for all practical purposes it does not matter whose head whose judgment is the power behind the throne. As the representative ot the poeople, our sena- tor has made & decided hit, Elected by the people, and pledged to do work for the people, his record is above re- proach, When a vote was to be taken | upon a bill introduced in the interest of the people, where was our giant statesman? Echo answers, where? The senate proceedings read abseut, and a horney handed rooster remarked the other day he was probably attending & woman's suffrage meeting. Of course this romark was entirely un- called for, and I resented it with all my onergy. Most certainly his sena- torial record is good. And when he comes before the people, humbly and prayerfully asking them to let him handle their money, (of which they huvefplonty, thanks to his vote on bill No.b2) they will, without a question of doubt, remember him, But then should he and Brother Dorsey fail through the treachery of their con- stituents, there will be this consola- tion left lhun, they can club together gud write a history. Jeff Davis did this, " you know, and I see no reason why they should not follow his excel lent example. Yours in the spirit ) head-ache or back-uche for ladics jyllesdsm D. M.
