An Intoxicated Colt Tries to Push Him in a Sewer Diteb. The Chinaman Baited in the Head with a Brick. With Knife and Plstol the Celestial Searches for Gore. A very exciting though ludicrous sensation occured on 13th street op- posite Hellman’s block about 1:30 p. m yesterday, which drew a crowd of two or three thousand to the spot. The leadingactqrs were Jas, Corigan, an Irishman who had taken too many drops of “mountain dew”, and Lo Hi Yung, a Chinese laundryman, whose wash house is on Harney strect nesr Twelfth. A deep ditch has been dog at the entrance of the alley along side of Martin Kennedy’s saloon, and the Chinaman, who was passing by, stopped & moment to look into the mysterious a depths. He wassuddenly startled by push from behind which nearly landed him at the hottom of the pi', but he saved himself by an agile leap which brought him to terra firma on the op- posite side. His assarlant not satis- fied with the result of his little joke went up sthe alley and got a couple of stones or bricks with which he fol- lowed John around the corner toward Farnam street, and firing one at his retreating form hit him in the back of the head and knocked him down. This_was too much for the Mongolian blood and Lo Hi Yung whipped out a murderous looking kuife, and stood at bay for a moment and then was about to as- sume the offensive and carve up his aseailant, when Mr Tallon sprang be- tween them at the risk of his own life and separated them. The half “‘par- alyzed” man who had started the af- fray was hustled out of sight, through Hellman's back way, and was soon es- corted to j by Officer Gorman, Yung left the scene of the encounter on_adead run, swearing vengeance, and returned I a moment with a huge derringer, the muzzle of which was up his siceve, and the butt decidedly conspicuous, as it rested in the paim of his hand. On arriving at the opposite of the sireet trom the assembled crowd, he howled ou: a fierce challengo to his adversary to come forth, and with a volley of thoroughly American oaths and epi- thets off :red to klll him on ht. As there was no responze John crossed the street and eagerly scanned the crowd for a might of the fellow he had no doubt made up his mind to kill, but of course did not see him. When warned that he would be pulled by the police if he did not look out, he expressed a con tempt for the police or jail, and said he din’t care; all he wanted was to kill his man, 3 Officers Jucobson and Donshoo ap- peared on the sceno finally, aud John forgot his dignity and took to his heels, muking a bee line for home fol- lowed by the whole crowd of men and boys. The officers were there in an instant after, but the heathen, with the deftness peculiar tc his race, hid the revolver so that all search failed to discover any deadly weapon, while the proprietor of the house looked utterly surprised that he should be suspected of even knowing of the existing of such a thing., Fail- ing to find the pistol or knife, they took the Chiuaman himself to jail, surronnded by a genuine Omaha street mob, John wore an air of stolid indifferenco which he kept up after his arrival at the jailor's oftice. On being searched nothing was found but a complete assortment of wash tickets, buttons and similar articles necessary to the trade, The sympathy of the crowd was ap- parently with Lo i Yung, and no one was heard to find fault with his i i iation, while it was an assuulted him when in a condition that made him scarcel responsiblo for what he did. All ad- mitted that but for Mr. Tallon’s timely and plucky interference a bloody murder would have been com- mitted then and there, SLAVEN'S YOSEMII'E COLOGNE, Made from the wild flowers of the rar FAMED YOSEMITE VALLEY, it is the most fragrant ot perfumes, Maunufactured by H. Olose the numerous testimoniale nppropriate for the oceasion which were received by Mrs. C. trom those present and from absent fricnds were discussed. At an early hour the guests departed, each expressing themsolves as having spenta 1o, enjogable evening, and winhing their hostess many returus of the day. Among the lady guests, marrivd), was one who, thirteen years ago was a pupil of thehost and hostess, Mr. Catleton having been principal and Mrs. C. preceptress of the school where the lady thea resided with her parents, SHOOTING SCRAPE, One of the Firat Fruits of the WMovement Against Houses of Iil-Fame, A Man's Skull Proof Against a 44 Calibre Ball A little fracas occurred at the road house on Eighteenth street, opposite Fort Omaha, last night, which was within an sce of ending in the death of one of the parties. The partic- ulars were not known in town until a lato hour, whon the affair became the seneation of the evening, Sinco the movement against the houses of ill fame on Twelfth street there has been a gen- eral resort by the inmates to the various ‘‘road houses,” which as predioted, have become mora liable to disturbances than were any of the bagr in “hell’s half-acre Yeater- day afternoon there was a genoral exodus by the demi-monde for these resorts, d among others who went out was Miss Jeanie Dickinson, who managed the best ‘‘gilt edge’ house on Twelfth stroet. Pote Rush, a momber of the sporting fraternity, was spending his aftornoon ut the same place. It appears that has by playing for the position of Miss Dickwngon’s solid man, with tol- erable success, and that there had been some lover’s quarrel, for which he gavo her a lively turning over dur- ing the aftornoon, and the misunder- standing was then patched up. There was also at the rond house in question a man named Hamlin, in- epector for the Western Horse and Cattle Tnsurance company, who was himeelf comfortably elevated by drink. Hamlin desired to treat the crowd, and Mlss Jennie declined to drink, whercupon he playfully slapped her in the face. Rush saw a good chance to make himself more solid and drew a revolver on Hamlin, who, it is claimed, had madc a movement as if to draw his weapuu, though it iy alleged thet he had left iv under the pillow at. Miss Dickinson's house. A sporting man pamed Rogers, who was present, tried to got Rush out of the roum, but he insisted on having a fair chance. Rogers told him that he would give him a fair chance if the worst came to the worst, but as he was standing be- tween them he, Rush, could not well he bo hurt. Rush, however, pulled his revolver, a 44 calibre, and pointing it over Rogers’ shoulder, fired at Ham- lin. The latter had thrown up his left arm in front of his face, and the ball passed through the cuff of his coat, cutting a crescent shaped hole in it. It then struck Hamlin on the left side of the forehead, and pass- ing through the door, lodged in the counter in the bar room. Hamliu is said to be not seriously hurt though it was a narrow escape from death, and remained at the road house all night. Rush was induced to return to the city without further demonstration against his adversary, and was playing ‘‘tho bank” at mid- night as coolly as if nothing had hap- pened. Tt is probable that the principals in the party will be arrested, but if not the case shows that the recent order of the city couneil is caleulated to re- store the condition of affuirs which ex- isted here twelve or fifteen years ago, when it was feared a vigilance committes would be necessary, and when the p:stors of the churches went to the councilmen aud besought thew to rescivd their orders and restore the former order of things. Carpenter, general passenger agent of the Milwaukeo & St. Paul, says ho does not expect that the Council Bluffs extension of his road will be open for passenger busi- ness before September 1st, as it is the intention of the company to have the road-bed well ballasted and the tracks in first-class order before attempting to do a large traffic over the cew line. When the line is open Mr. Carpenter says it will be equal in every respect to any of the liues between Chicago and Omaha, PECULIAR RAILROAD TERMS, A member of the party who accom- panied the Duke of Sutherland to this country and passed throngh Omaha Just season has since his return to Eug- land written a book, the contents of which aro a sketch of the journey through America, The book is a pamplilet of seventy pages, written by teorge P, Necle, Superintendent of the London & Northwestern, Some of the skeiches are quite interesting, Mr. Neele says: *‘Some of the ex- pressions used in America in connec- tion with railway appliances are pscu- Jiar.,” In showing the ‘‘peculiarity” alluded to he at the same time furn. ishes the corresponding Kaglish terin for the same meaning as follows: “‘A railway station is called a depot —pronounced deep-o. ©A bank engine is called a ‘helper’ or ‘pusher.’ “‘Diamond crossings ‘frogs.” Sleepers are called ‘tie “‘An engine driver is called an ‘en- gineer.’” “‘The marshalling of traius is spoken of as ‘switching.’*’ “‘A level crossing is called a ‘cross- ing at grade.’s” “‘The gager of platelayers is called the ‘track foreman.’ " “The expressions ‘bogie’ and ‘cow- catcher’ are not American, The for- mer 18 called the ‘truck’ and the lat ter the ‘pilot.’ " “The extent to which pufling an nouncements are made by the rail are called ways is remarkable. C. Townsend, general pas- nenger agent of the Wabash Railway, and George W. Clayton, general trav: |* eling agent of the same road arrived in the city yesterday. From them i is learned that the propored fast mail line between New York and San Francisco has probably turned out as Tue Ber predicted, in nothing but wind. It appears that the government only offered one dollar per mile for carry- ing the mail, with ne remuneration for the roturn trip, which would make it equal to fifty conts a mile for the round trip, which would be no ade- quate pay for the extra expense, It is also doubtful if any fast mail wiil be put on cven between Chicago and New York J.
