Davis and B, D, Sheridan were yesterday arrested as vagrants on com- plaist of T. Metcalf, who claimed that they were prowling about his place, sleep- ing in his barn, avd being in the way gen- BURGLARS ABROAD. — Citizens Should Watch as Well as Pray. There is evidently a gang of sneak- thieves and house breakers hanging in and about the cily, as the events of the past few days evidences. The bur- glaries of the Arcade store, Pat Lacey's, and others on Broadway, for which no arrests have been made, show that the fellows arestill at large, and other attempts indicate that the city has not been made hot enough for them to leave yot. Sometime during Tuesday night an attempt was made to enter the residence of James Smith, on Seventh street just north of the creck. Some boarders in the house heard some o:e prowling about the yard, and an attempt to open the shutters awakened Mrs. Smith, who spoke to her husband, hearing which J.f fellows decamped hastily. About ten days ago burglars succeoded in gotting an entrance into the kitchen of this same house, bnt took only a butoher knife, which was afterwards found at Goulden’s house, where it had been dropped by the fellows who went through there. Btill another futile attempt was made the other evening to enter & house near the south end of Glenn avenue, and a day or two afterwards a pocket fuse and candle was found in the grass near the house. DIED IN THE TENT. Another Vietim of the Pestilence Drops Off, and Still Another Takes His Place. The young man named Cooper, who was taken from the Sioux City house a fow days ago to the small pox tent, on the county farm, died there ycater. day morning. The small pox might have been tho cause of death, 11 itis thought that an injury received by him lately had als» much to do with it. A woek or more ago, while slecp- ing in a barn in the rear of the Sioux City house, he got up and walked into a hole, through which he fell some distance, striking on his side, appar- ently causing some internal injuries, and inflammation set in. Another young man fell a victim yosterday to the same disease, and was taken from his fathers house, near the transfer, to the tent, and is the only patient there now. Hia namo is Strahr, The Sioux City house is kept quar- antined, but not mo olosely as to as- sure complete safety. One woman, who slipped away from the house the ether n?ght, alipped back in again on Tuesday night. Another one of the inmates was seen on the streets once or twice, but on being warned that if caught again he would be taken to ‘WANTED—To rent about July 1st, & house with four or five rooms. In- quire at Tre Bzk office. LET LOOSE ‘The Trio Suspected of Having Robbed Mr. Clovis Duly Discharged. Yesterday merning the three men, John King. George Jones and W, H. Hill, arrested on suspicion ot having robbed Mr. Olovie, the Griswold mer- chant, appeared before Judge Angles- worth for examination. Mr. C. R. Scott, who appeared for the state, ex- amined the witnesses privately and could get nothing in his judgment which would cause the men to be held, and aftor keeping the curieus crowd waiting outside the rail for some time while he consulted in a whisper with one after another, he then requested that the case be dismissed. The judge accordingly entered that order, which was about all the public pro- ceedings whbich the crowd had to satis- fy their craving for sensationalism. Mr. Clovis was able to appear in court on crutches, but he could not identify any of the partios. The causes leadin, these men seem to have been as fol- lows: They were strangers and left the citg on a train soon after the robbery, and being sporting men they were naturally not over-communicative about them- selves or their business, They had between three and four hundred dol- Jars with them, and when the conduc: tor received the telegram from Mayor Bowman, asking him whether there wore any suspicious characters on the train, he wired back concerning these men, and received orders to have them held at Hamburg, ‘The mayor and Officer Morse went there, got them, and brought them here, Tiuy gave satisfactory statements as to where they had put in their time, and had witnesses who knew of their where- abouts while in this city. There was nothing to identify them, and no clue by which the authorities could trace any connection between them and the crime, As is common is such cases there are some who receive Mr. Clovis' ac- ocount of the robbery with suspicion, Some think that he has exaggerated the amount, and others whisper that it is all nwde up. But the fact re- mains that Mr. Olovis bears the marks to the arrest of erally, Sheridan was found guilty and was fined $25, His comrade was dis- charged. —A big burly fellow giving his name as Collins was yesterday aroused from his slumbers in Bayliss park by Mr. Jacksen, the park policeman, who kindly told him it was no free lodging house, The fellow got mad and abused Jackson o fiercely that he was locked up and given a chance to cool down, and was then and was then fined $7.60, ~—Pasdsengers on the dumwy train be- tween this clty and Omsha remark that the conductor, Charlie Mack, has a poor opinion of Council Bluff-. and has formed the habit of sneeringly answering ques. tions about the city, when put to him by strangers, pronouncing this a country village. If hethinks he makes any capital for himself by such actions he iy eadly mistaken, for after one sees what Councll Bluffs is and how she is growing, a very poor idea is formed of & railway man who glves such information as he does. —There was a matrimonial event yester- day which interested a large number of residents in and about this city, Thecon tracting parties were H. H, Martens, and Miss Mary Kuhl, The ceremony was performed at the Catholic chuich, Rev. Father McMenomy officiating. The wed. ding party accompanied by & band then procecded to Mr, Martens' farm about five miles from the city, where festivities were set in motion, in which several hundred friends participated, there being music und teasting and a flow of enjoyment. Hospitality was unlimited, snd the guests who were many, had as merry a time as ever graced & wedding in this county, ~Cewplaint is made that some of the trenches where the water pipes have been laid have been so loosely filled, and so clumsily humped up as to be both annoy- ing and dangerous to travel. One gentle- man's horse, stepping on a trench the other night, went down, and a serious ac- cident was barely escaped. In case of damages, the city will bave to stand it. At the time of the passage of the ordi. nance an attempt was made to have it so worded as to make the first claim for damages on the company, but no heed was paid. Now the prior claims come on the city. It behooves the city ofivials, there fore, to see to it that there is no cause for compiaint er chancs for any damage to arise, e, WANTED. —To buy 2,000 bushels market price of White Corn. Blwx;.m:!. of having been badly injured, and his ore.dit.nn, those for whom he i\u been acting as agent, and whoee business relationships are such as to lead them to know the man well, seem to have confidence in him and his story, It is probable that whoever did attack and rob him must have known more or leas of his business and money mat- ters and followed him from either Griswold or Atlantio, he having driven from his home in the former place to Atlantic, where he tuok the train. He did not notice any ns particularly who took the train or were on the train, and in fact seems to be in a con- dition to be unable to identify any of the parties concerned in the robbery. —— CHICKERING AHEAD, J, Mueller says the trade in the Chickering Piano justnow is immense; have to wait from” two weeks to one month to get orders filled from the factory, although they make seventy- five per weoek, Those medal actions in tho upright is what does it. The Public’ Library. At the regular mouthly meeting of the library trustees, Messrs, Everett, Bloomer, Street, Hamlin, Officer and Vaughn were present. Bills were allowed amounting to $116.65. The price of the catalogue was fixed at fifteen cents per copy. The commit- tee on books was instructed to pur- chaso & new supply for the library, The librarian reported the number of visitors to the library during the month of May to be 1,206, and the number of books taken from the the tent, concluded to keep retired. Wilmer Atkinson, publisher of The Farm Journal, of Philadelphia, ‘was in the city yesterday. T. A. Bradwell, of Logan, one of the smallest men in size, but one of the largest dealer in renl estate inthis part of the withdraw, and just at that time, too, Anderson would have been beaten two to one in the convention. The number of the best men in the party, who were lobbying against him at the convention, ulso shows there is a feel- ing against him that is deep-seated. He made a very nice little #peech at the close, which if carried out will be far better than cither his political friends can expect or enemies hope for. The report of his entering into athovand dollsr bond to carry out promises of an appointment to cffice on condition that the delegates of a certain township would support him in convention, was the subject of much talk during the day. Actions spoak louder than worde, so far at least. Trades, purchases, promises of office, and the short canvass, while people are absorbed ir the constitutional amendment, are bringing him the de- sired booty.
