A Town of Two Year's Growth in a Cornfleld. With Business Interests Not Sar- passed by Many an Older Burg. Correspondence of The Bee. Griswoup, Ta., June 6, 1882, Two years ago last fall, when the Red Oak Branch of the C. B. & Q. was established in Cass county, Mr. C. . Perkins, president of the road, and F. H. Whitney, of Atlanti chased nesrly a quarter sectionof land for a town site and laid out the town of Griswold, in the southwest corner of Cass coun'y, sixteen miles from Atlantic, by the Rock Island branch, and eighteen from Red Oak by the “Q’stub. The valley of the Nishna, here, is perhaps two or three miles wide, and the Dbluffs low and almost unnoticeable, all being capable of easy cultivation. Iun the centre of this valloy, 8o level and beautiful, Iike the great plains of the Jordan, and as rich as Egypt, a town was platted, and the stakes driven in a cornfield, during the month of November. Business men began to flock in and ‘‘stake their claims,” and during the winter season even, building was going on and vari- ous kinds of business being estab- lished. c, pur- THE GROWTH of the place can be estimated bya statement of the building and some items of business. Two fine churches —Methodist and Baptist—have been built and supplied with good bells; a large two story $10,000 brick school house with the modern fnrniture, hot air furnaces, and a good corps of teachers, a steam elovator of the larg. est size along this line, several good hotels, bank, planing mill and furni- ture factory; a large number of large trading houses, three or four livery stables; lumber yards, grain houses, implement houses, drug stores, print- ing house, and a large list of resi dences, many of which are of good quality and really elegant. During the five months since the beginning of this year, no less than fifty new dwellings have been built, and a long Jist are expected this summer, besides the business houses, creamery, new ele- vator, ote, Probably $40,000 have been expended in sidewalks, which are twelve feet wide in the business part of the town. The city has just or- ganized a fire department and pur- chased the “‘Old Rescue” engine and outfit, from the city of Council Bluffs, and they are putting in wells and tanks on every block in the business portion of the city, although the boys who ‘‘run with the machine” don’t ex- pect to attend the firemen’s tourna- ment Among the early institutions located here was the BANK OF GRISWOLD, which became an established fact in October, 1880, with J. H. Whitney, president, and T. H. Brown, cashier. It is located in the western central part of the business portion of the town, in a large two story building and furnished with all the conveniences for doing & complete banking business and handling securities with safety, | j and its loan and collection department is no small item. MR, THEO, H, BROWN, the cashier, who was formerly a resi- dent of McGregor, Iowa, is the prac- “ical manager of this institution and agent for the town lot company. Asa careful, prudent business man, Mr, Brown is a model, and is, withall, a cultivated gentleman well fitted for the position; and is honored and re- spected by the large circle of business men with whom he associatee. THE FLEVATOR is the property of Mr. T. H. Whitney, althowgh leased and controlled by E. W, Stevens, a heavy grain dealer of Red Oak, Mr. A. J. Bell, who per- sonally attends to the business here, is now the oldest grain dealer in Gris- wold, he having been in the grain trade here since the town was planted J. A, TOTTON is another of the pioneer grain dealers who is handling a large amount of in and seeds, The firm was for- merly Totton & Mason, and they put in the first scales and opened the &rst grain trade in Griswold, living like soldiers on the *‘teated field,” cooking for themselves and sleeping on the soft side of & board. J. M. COATS, a native of Pattsburg, Pa., is the con- trolling spirit in another large grain and stock firm, which although a branch of the C. E, Myers & Co., of Lewis, is doing a large business, and expects to build an_elevator this sea- son. Some idea of the amount of business transacted here by theso dealers may be of interest, The four firms have taken in as high as 14,000 bushels of corn in one day, and Mr. Bell relates that he has received 2,000 or 3,000 bushels a day on a great many days. The firm of BROCKWAY & JOHNSON, live stook dealers, are credited with shipping three full train loads of stock in a single day, and drawing $45,000 from the bauk here to pay for the stock that duy. THE KIPP BROS, are the largest lumber dealers at this place, where the two are usually found, while the third is managing another yard and hardware and im- plement house at Elliot, six miles south, The Kipp Bros, are Chicago men, of large ideas and cultivated manners, and have epent their whole lives in the lumber business, and it is such candid, thoughtful, straightfor- ward men who give credit to the busi- ness interests of a town and deter- mine ite future greatness, Auother of the great enterprises of the place 18 the general merchandise house or “‘universal store” of WILLIAM CORBIT, which was located here when there was but one other general storé here, in March, 1880, The dry goods de- partment of this establishment fronts on Main street, and is really a large store, full of goods, while the grocery and crockery departments are each b themselves, in adjoining rooms, front- ing on another street, and are each complete stores. This great triple #eading house is owned and personally managed by Mr. Oorbic, who, as might be expected, has built up a large trade, while his correct business habits, enterprise and good citizen- ship have made both himself and his husiness a credit to the place and the pride of the burgers. We judge his atock to be not less than £15,000 to $20,000, and each dopartment was busy. JOHN ¥, CROMLEY is another of THe Ber readers, Mr. C. is & young man who came here from Atlantic a year since, and opened a drug stora, and although there is an- other store larger, he has an envi ble reputstion as a citizen, and keeps full stock. The furniture business is in some respects in advance of many other towns., pAvis & o, have a sales room at the west end ot Main street, and during the past sea son they have began to manufacture many articles of furniture in their fa tory which was built in the early days cf the young city, for a planing mill, and as such still does a large business; and their great buildings, and machinery indicato that they are, day by day, building up an industry here that 18 an important factor in the town, and will return a good dividend to the proprietors. Neatly opposite, on the other side of Main street, is the furniture houss of R. GROETSCHEL, which is full from cellar to garret, Mr. G. has opened this second furniture establishment here during the last few months, in a good two story building and proposes to contest, in an honor- able way, for & portion of the trade, Either of th stores can confpete with any city in this part of the state, and the proprietors, all hard working, energetic men, and have good loca- tious in the newer and more fashion- able part of town. THE ADVOCATE, published by D. H. Scott, is an eight column folio, that greets its patrons every Wednesaay, and is well patron- ized. This office excels in fine me- chanical work, and is recognized as a good job office. Mr. Scott is also the popular justice, 80 a libel suit against that paper would be ueeless in his court, and if this, as an experiment, is a success, in protecting newspaper men, it will become popular with the craft THE WHITNEY HOUSE has changed hande, and hereafter Mr. E. Haymaker, of Lewis, will be recog- nized as “'mine host.” e is building a new barn near the hotel, and will remove his livery here from the ex-county seat. The retiring pro- prictor, Mr. G. H. Bradbrouk, is a railroad man of many years’ experi- ence, being for some time a conductor on the Rock Island road, and he will no doubt go west to some of the younger roads for new fields of labor, and 1t is to be hoped and is confident- ly expected, that the Whitney house will continue its good name as the best house on this line. Mr. F. B. LeFeber, for some time the popvlar and obliging agent at Stanton on the “‘Q,” is managing the railroad businese here, and with the two roads has plenty to do. We notice, also, 0. J. King, of Corning, Iows, an architect of repu- tation, who is building the $50, court house at Atlantic, and quite a number of buildings in different parts of the state, and who is a builder of large experience in Ohicago, and Dr. Haughawont, surgeon dentist of Atlantic, quite recently from Chicago, and who performed succes:- fully some difficult work in dental surgery in Lewis last week, and to which our attention was called at the time, The doctor is an expert and very successful operator in gold, It would be interesting, possibly, to notice the many general merchandise, jewelry and stores, and the large hard- ware and implement house of C. W. & J. L. Mitner, and many other impor- tant and worthy firms and business men, but after returning thanks to Mr. J. H. Booth, attorney at law, tor assistanco in securing a good list of subscribers, I will mention that the young city has a fine park, planted with trees and situated just north of the town, which will before many years be the pride of the citizens, and add to the completeness of the sur- rounding, 1f we think of the few months on‘l’y since this city of 700 was a oornfield, and watch the steady growtb and prosperity, its rise in real egtace, indicated by the $50 per acre asked for a farm just nmorth of town, and another, a mile from the city that is held at 8100 per acre; if we watch its building, its enterprise, and mark the intelligence and public spirit of the larger portion of the busi- ness men, we must admit that the *‘Great West" is fast developing into great cities, which are the centers of social and religious ties, around which revolves the wheels of government, and in which the millions are daily be- coming wealthy, as the national "gar- den is cultivated. BUCKEYE, —_— Not a Beverage “They are not a_ boverage, but a medicine, with curative properties of the highest degree, containing no poor whisky or poisonous drugs, m,(,y do not tear down an already debilivyted system, but build it up, One bow]e contains more hops, that is, more res hop strength, than a barrel of ordinary beer. Every druggist in Rochest gells them, and the physiciane pre- ecribe them.”—[Evening Express on Hop PBitters. The Pennywelght Game. Philad:lphia Press, Two men, attired in garments of the description most approved of by *‘fast young men about town,” entered the jewelry store yesterday afternoon of Butler & McCarty, conducted by Herbert & Co., on the corner of Sec- ond and Elfreth streets, above Arch, where they asked to be shown gold- linked watch chains, As they were examining the chainsZplaced on the counter the attendant noticed one of the men substitute a chain for one of those displayed. Officers Thayer and Vandevere, of the Fourth district, were summoned, and the men were taken to the station house. One of the prisoners gave the name of H. Reynolds, of Oleveland, Ohio, and the | & other gaid his name was E, Mason, but he refused to give his residence. It is suppesed that the men are New Yorkers and ars old offenders., One of them was given a hearing some time ago at the Central Police station, accused of a similar offense, but the charge was not proven, and the man was released from custody. After their arrest yesterday, a clerk was sent for from Baily, Banks & Biddle, under thesupposition thatthe prisoners might be the men who about a year ago sub- stituted a bogus diamond ring for one that was worth 8300, which they were examining in the store; but the clerk could not identify either of the pris- oners a8 being concerned in that oper- ation, In police parlance the manner in which the prisoners work is known as the *‘penny-weight game.” They carry a quantity of bogus jewelry with them when they enter a store for the ostensible purpose of making a pur- chase, Holding a handkerchief in one hand, underneath whick is concealed a bogus article similar in design to the one they ere examining, they deftly bstitute the bogus article for the Jine one, which 1 gathered up by he unsuspeoting storekoeper with the vest of his wares, The prisoners will bo given a hearing to-day at the Cen- tral Stavon, Love Your Nelghbor, .
