An exciting incident, which illus- trates the perils and discomforts of deep mining in Nevada,occured in the Alta mine & few dnyl ago. While seven men were working in the end of & drift, 1,600 feet below the surface, [y poworlnl & K which was constant- ly used to lift the constantly flowing e, | menced, and at the same time air was [-.m from the drift, broke and the pumping was stopped, The rapidly accumulating water rose in the draft and broke through the bulkhead orected to protect the working party, and it was thought the men must cither drown or be overcome by the heat and the lack of of air in their deep under ground prison, It was remembercd, however, that the end of the dnft where the party were imprisoned was higher than the general level, and this might save them from drowning at least. The broken pump was repaired aa quickly as possible, and the pump- i~g of water from the drift recom forced into the dritt through pipes. The work of rescue ko kept up day and night for two days, and on Fri- day, sixty hours after ths accident oc- curred, the water the drift was lowered suff to allow & emall, light canvas boat, with thrce men in 1t, to be let down. Two of the men died of the stifling hot air, aud the third barely effocted his escape. Notwith- standing this, a fourth man descended and attempted to wade to the end of the drift, but ho was forced to return in a delirious condition, without ac complishing anything more than sceing a light at the end of the drift and finding the boat. Two others fol- lowed, but were unable to reach the desired point on account of the heat and gas, Still another, having hishead protected with an ice helmet, used by miners in the deep lovels, descended and waded through the hot water to the end of the drift, where, to his great surprise and delight, he’ found the seven prisoners nhvo, nearly starved to death, patiently waiting for the rescue '.In-y hoped would come, but resigned to their fate if the worst should come. They were speedily brought out. But thereis no profit in this business for the man who pays $200 or more per acre, and has to wait seven or eight years before he gets any return upon his invest- ment. The shrewd men are finding this out, and are giving their atten- tion to vineyards. The grape does well here, and yields a large quan- tity of wine. The vines will do well without irrigation, while the orange tree requires tobs irrigaved five or six times during the year. The owners of the large vineyards have each a distillery and winehouse, and not only manufacture their own grapes into wine and brandy, but purchase the grapes grown by those who have small vineyards. The wine made by two or three of the leading growers is excellent if allowed to at- tain any age, hut nearly all tke wine is sold when new, and’ a great deal is made by careless men and is unfit to drink, aud the consequence is that with many strangers Los Angelos wines have a poor reputation. ~ My first impression of the wines of this ‘country was anything but favorable, but afterwards I came ' across » Canadian who was an excellentjudge of wine, and from him I learned whero to get good vintages. I fuund good, sound port, and most excellent claret, called “Zinfandel,” after the grape from which it was made. The ‘‘Burger,” a white wine, is good if al- lowed a few years in whici to mature. When new it is too heavy. When capital enough is invested in this busi- ness to allow the wines to mature be- fore being sold, and the intelligent system of manufacturing lately in- augurated by some of the proprietors of the largest vineyards has become eneral, this country will rival jthe ar-famed provinces of France in the quality and quantity of 1ts wines. cure you, How They Were Removed.
