The Dandy Hull and His Little Bar'l, Regent Gere Still Roosting "Old Si” and His Title. Correspondence of Tho Bee. LwvcorN, Neb., June 10.—The principal topic of conversation here is the extremely low bail bond re- quired of D. G. Hull, the late cus- todian of our government building. Even the Lincoln Journal, that never means to say anything, gave the Uniled States district judge for the district of Nebraska a backhanded slap the other day for allowing a man to go at large with only $1,000 bail, after having been indicted twenty or thirty times for stealing $6,000. Mr. Hathaway evidently never knaw that such an item would appear, or he would have suppressed it, for fear that the learned judge might in his profound wisdom decide that some of the legal notices might be published in & more legal sheet. The people of Nebraska have also spoken in tones loud enough to be distinctly under- stood on this question, and if this is an indication of the course to be pur- sued threughout this trial, Mr. Hull may as well be turned loose at once. Lawyer who pretend to be posted, have said from the beginning that the trial would ke worse than a farce, THE UNIVERSITY of Nebraska is in a muddle now, and no mistake, and the people all over the state are watching with a great deal of interest the course to be pur- sued by Hon. C. H, Gere, the newly appointed regent. Mr. Gere has al- ready commenced his usual straddling prooess, and before the second meet- ng of the board his legs will be about twice as long as they are now, and his body correspondingly short. The pro- gramme, as it now stands, is to retain the chancellor and take back Profes- sors Emerson and Woodbury, and leave Professor Church out in the cold, But thisis lub}'ect to change in case the State Journal can be sure of a little extra patronage by bringing the change about. Mr. Gere holds the balance of power in the board of re- genu, and the people who do not now him are expecting great things, Some even declare that he is to clean out the institution, root and branch, but this class of people do not know their man, He has not got a decent sized back bone, and what he has got is made of the very poorest material, POLITICAL NEWS is rather scarce at this writing, Gen, 8i Alexander who has been expecting to be boosted clear into the guberna- torial chair by the G. A. R. boom, finds that there is a prospect of a real soldier coming to the front. Si was never in a battle tillhe went to‘‘Camp Dump,” and never saw a live rebel or a dead one, either, for that matter, and was not out of the state during the war and how he ever became the commander of the G. A, R, is a mys- tery. It is now definitely arranged that Assistant Secretary of State Roggen is to be the German candidate (in his own mind) for secretary of state, and if beer drinking is the only qualification he is fully up to the standard, In this congreseional dia- trict there appears to be no lack of candidates. We have heard the same of Gen, Manderson mentioned from {our own city and Judge Weaver of Richardson, 18 also spoken of, while Hon. C, O. Whedon is prominently named as the anti-monopoly candid- ate, and the railroads have decided a8 a last resort, to bring forward Gen. Cobb, in case the anti-monops pre- sent too strong a front, but this is only in case all other dodges fail. In the Becond district James Laird is the railroad candidate, and he and his friends calculate that they have a walk-away, Of course the Alliance will control Adams ocounty, no Green House 17th sand Webater street, Fiadts, Bouduets, Flowers, Flor Desigis be. one doubts that, but tten he is mak- ing his arrangements to control the Alliance, and that wiil give him his own county to start with GONE TO WASHINGTON. Our townsman W, H. B. Stout is in Washington, figuring to have the “ [ smallest colonel in the United States Col. Smith), of this city, appointed to the position of superintendent of the Denver court house and post- wtise. | offico that is soon to be built at that place. It Smith gets the coveted place Mr. ut will undoubtedly have the s otion of putting in a fow rock at ressonable figu; NOX Correspondence of The Nionrawa, June 8. —Tho past throe days has boen very warm and im- proved the corn very materially. Small grain is doing well and promises a good yiold; no frost in this section of the country to do any harm. The News says Niobrara is to have & boom this month, probably the ox- tension of the C., M. & St. P. R. R. across the Missouri river, thence in a southwesterly direction to some point on the U, P, R. R. —_— WAHBOO NOTES, Corrospondence of the Bee. The John A. Androw post of the G. A. R, with the Wahoo Base Ball club, are arranging for an excursion to Fremont and Columbus on the 16th F. M. Stratton's new brick block is well under headway, some fifteen or twenty men being engaged thereon. Joseph & Giratfe will soon commence a large addition to their present com- modious building. The DeRoe house, the only first class hotal building in town, is still without an ocoupant. Why this so your correspondent is not informed. It stands cn the corner of Fifth street and Broadway, an ornament to the town. It was built expressly for a hotel and is four stories high ‘includ- ing basement, Here is a good chance for some good hotel man. The building boom still continues in Wahoo. Twenty to thirty build- ings can be counted under construc- tion, anong the finest of these may be mentioned the residence of €. F. Williame, C. M. Copp and J, B, Stur- devant on Linden avenue and I E. Phelps on Broadway. Ostenberg & Co, are now shelling and shipping their immenso crib of corn. This corn was mostly bought from thirty-five to.forty-five conts per bushel. A handsome profit will be realized on the investment. Tuar OtHer FELnow. Given Away. I don't believe there is any region on earth where roses grow in such abundance, variety, beauty and sweet- ness as they do in the country. A Mississippi gentleman, to whom I have been indebted for in- formation on various subjects, tells | & ew Orleans | = SPRING AND SUMMER STOOK —OF s Men'’s, Boys’ and Children's CLOTHING Ready for In¢pection '\, . POLACK'S CLOTHING HOUSE. 1316 Farnam Street, Near 14th, Marl8nod. DEWEY & STONE, FURNITURE /Ap me that there is growing and in bloom at his home this moment a Lamarque vine eight feet long. The stem is eight inches through in the thickest part. It was planted seventeen or eighteen years ago. It is twined around a verands, and its gorgeous clusters of cream-tinted roses are splendid to behold. At New Orleans the Marechal Niel roses cause the Northerner to stare in speech- less wonder. I saw one of the plants that must have been fifty foot long. I have seen vines of the same rose that long in the North, but they were scraggy, and lean-looking, and in the florist’s greenhouses. AtNew Or- leans they run wild and revel like a midsummer night's dream. The blos- soms grow in gorgeous clusters ot half a dozen or more, and the flowers are 80 large that they would more than cover the top of a large sized coffee- oup. A single one of the pale-gold beauties will fill a room with perfume. They are as plenty down here as “white top” in a northern meadow. And they sell for 81 a bud up north. In some of the prlvate citizens' yards in New Orleans there are as many as 8 hundred different kinds of roses all in bloom at once. They do notgre- quire protection from ocold at any time, They all stand out-doors in the open ground, and many varieties bloom more or less all the winter through, The rose is favonte flower at New Orleans, At the jockey club races we saw dozens of handsomely dressed ladies with ex- quisite bunches of rosebuds at their belts and elsewhere in their dresses— the sweet, lovely flower that nature made, none of yoar abominable arti- ficial things, The rose the French in- habitants of New Orleans are fondest of for decoration is called the ‘‘Gold of Ophir.” Northern florists have it, but it 18 not common. The bud is especially prized for its beauty, 1t is » smallish rose, of very pale-pink, shading on towards the heart in a deep, rich gold color. Faint streaks of crimson touch the outer petals, 1t 1s one of the loveliest roses 1 ever BAW, Our Glorious Inde ‘What can be more glorious than to be independent of suffering, caused by dys- opela, indigestion, constipation, slok headache, or other diseases emanating from the stomach, This can be easily s: ned by a timely use of Burnock Brooi Genius Rewarded; Pho Story of the Sewing Machins, A bandsome little pamphlet, blue and gold cove with numerous engravings, will b GIVEN AWAY tos ny sault person calllng for it, at any branch or sub-oftice of The Binger’ Manuiacturlu Cou pouy, or will be sent by wail, post pald, to any person living at & distance frow our offices.
