Successful Convention Recently Held &t Clarinda, Correspondenceof The Bee. CLARINDA, Ia., May 23.—The most successful musical convention ever Medical Electrician |held in our city has just closed. The conductor, Miss Alice Mtchell, of AND Chicago, and, by the way, the only lady musicsl conducter in the work, has added new laurels to her brilliant name among our peeple. The whole musical talent of owr city joined in the convention and in the concert given at the close, and which was repeated. A hundred and thirty voices blended in the most beautiful harmony, which geve evidence of the guidance by a wmaster. The opera house wes crowded to overflowing, and the heavy programme was fully carried out without a blunder or even a hesitation. Miss Mitchell has the happy faculty of mouldirig and welding her work in such a way gthat a chorus feels per- fectly eontident when it comes on the stage that every part has been so ad- justed and fortified that there can be no brer_nk, and that failure is not to be found in their dictionary. Goodman MILLVILLE'S SENSATION. nte. A Jersey Town Turned Upside Down by the Doings of an Organist, a Preacher and an Acrobat. From the Philadelph'a Time, A pretty widow, a clergyman wnd a muscular young Christian who turned flip-flaps in Barnum’s circus, and was billed as ‘‘the champion Indian club swinger of America,” have just cre- ated the most paralyzing sensacion of the year in the social eircles of the sleepy little town of Millville, New Jersey. The minister has given up his church and become a pedagogue in Newark; Barnum’s club-swinger lan- guishes in Brighton jail, and the fas- cinating young widow who caused all the trouble is in a state of lachrymose misery in Millville. Three years ago the Rev. B. M Braden, |{m son of a well known E, copalian divine of Salem county, came rector of Christ Protestant Epia- 7 BATHING HOUSE! At Bryant's Spring, Cor. Broadway and Union Sts. DR, A, H Stvoiey & Co., If You Wish a Lunch Go to copal church of Millville. He was at that time about twenty-six years of age and the Millville church was his first charge. He is said to be tall, dark, handsome, intelligent, studious and very bashiul. When Mr., Braden came to Millville Mrs, Kate Wells, a beautiful brunette, was the organist. She is the sister of George Payne, late member of the New Jersey legisla- ture, and the widow of Robert Wells, son of ex'Mayor Wells, of Millville, SUE FALLS IN LOVE WITH VANETTA ‘When Robert Wells died in a luna- tic asylum, in_1877, he left behind him a widow and three children, all of whom are alive. In the following spring, before the violets bloomed on Robert’s grave, his widow became quite intimate with, or, as the natives express it, ‘‘took up with” Henry Vogt, a circus acrobat, known to the public as ‘‘Harry Vanetta,” who left the sawdust arena and became a ship- ping clerk for the glass manufacturing tirm of Whitall & Taitem of Mullville. When Mrs. Wells became acquainted with Vanetta she was a teacher in one of the public schools and played the organ in Christ church. Van- etta’s marvellous tales of ad- venture in all parts of the world, his anecdotes of circus and theatrical life, his seeming knowledge of all sporting matters soon made him well known in the community. As his habits were regular and his asso- ciates reputable he was appointed superintendent of the gymnasium at- tached to the Millvilleinstitute. After basking in the sunlight of Mrs. Wells’ fascinating black eyes a few weeks he joined the choir of Christ church and sang there regulasly until a few days ago. It was soon set down that he and Mrs. Wells were engaged, and their courtship moved along delight- fully until the Rev. Mr. Braden made his appearance on the scene, SETTING HER @AP FOR THE MINISTER Then, it is said, the widow became infatuated with him, and the muscular charms of her acrobatic and club- swinging admirer were no longer ap- preciated. Hx-Mayor Wells, the father of her dead husband, declares that as soon as she set eyes on the new clergyman she informed her feminine «confidants that she considered him a valuable matrimonial prize-package and intended to win him. Her ac- 9uaintances say that she even went so tar as to map out a line of social poli- cy that she intended pursuing when she should change her name from Wells to Braden, The radical chnnfes she proposed making in the social circles of Millville are said to have terrified the leaders of the vari- cus circles, and they took the first opportunity te warn tke minister of hiz danger. His friends assert that after being warned he shunned the fair widow as he would have shunned a plague, but, on the other hand, Mre. Wells' friends as stoutly assert that his vanity was tickled by the im- pression he had made on the suscep- tible relict of Robert Wells, and he sought her society, For months the town was filled with the most contra dictory stories about the behavior of the minister and Mrs, Wells to each other, BEGGING HIM TO MARRY HER. All this time the vitals of the jilted club swinger were being slowly but surely consumed by the fires of jeal- ously that raged “within him, ~As, however, he sang in the choir and was a member of the vestry of Christ churph, he was compelled to assume an air of patient resignation and grin and bear it. Finally it was currently reported that Mra. slell. had thrown her arms around the minister’s neck and begged him to marry her, and teat on “another occasion she lured him to her home on Sassafras street, near the church, under the pretence of asking his advice on an important business matter, but in reality to make love to him, These stories in- flamed the already disturbed mind of the unhappy acrobat, and he publicly dl:m ared war against his ministerial rival. Vanet- ta's jealousy, the undaunted widow's advances and the scandalous rumors that were circulated made the clergy- man's life anything but happy. About this time he delivered a sermon on the suffering poor and in it spoke vig orously against the hard-heartedness of wealthy people, The cermon hurt the sensitive feelings of several influ ential members of the congregation, and increased the minister's troubles. At this point the club-swinger, unable to longer control his his voleono of jealousy, began publicly denouncing the clergyman and advocating the cause of Mrs, Wells, whu took him back into her heart, THE mpm‘n LEAVES THE TOWN, A meeting of the vestry was called Soups, Meats, and Eatables always on hand, Five Cents per call, STARR & BUNCH, ORNAMENTAL PAINTERS. Last week Vanetta wrote an open letter to the minister, and before sending it to him read and exhibited it to a number of citizens, The letter covered four pages of fools- cap, and 1 it Vanetta charged that the minister was ‘‘a liar,” ‘‘a perjur- er,” “a robber of®female virtue,” and 80 on, Those who have seen the let- ter say it 18 one of the most scathing, bitter and vulgar documents they ever saw. This letter created a sensation, On Saturday last Judge Altred Reed issued a bench warrant for the club- swinger’s arrest on a charge of slan- dering Mr, Braden. Sheriff Husted arrested Vanetta on Saturday evening, and he was lodged in jail to answer the charge on October 1. Several persons offered to become Vanetta’s bondsmen, but they were not accepted, and he was still in jail yesterday. The clergyman’s attor- neys are Col. Porter and J. L. Van Syckel. On the same day that Va- netta was arrested the minister re- signed his charge of Christ church and went te Newark to take charge of a vprivnte school, but the dashing Mrs, Wells is still there to play the organ. — "Bucklin'’s Arnica Salve, The Besr 8ALvE in the world for Cuts, Bruises, Sores, Ulcers, Salt Rheum, Fever Sores, Tetter, Chapped Hands, Chilblains, Corns, and all_skin oqu.fionl, and i tively cures piles, It guaran to ive satisfaction or money refunded, Price, 25 cents per box, For sale by C.
