Gladstone, 10 Downing street, Whitehall, London, England: The Irish of every grade abhor the assassination of Lord Cavendish and Mr. Burke. They sympathize with you and their families. They regret that so_henious a crime should have ushered 1n what promises to be the most glorious epoch of your adminie- tration, and parallel it with the mur- der of President Lincoln while adyo- cating the pacification of the south. TroMas O'RE1LLY, Chairman Central Council, St. Lows Land Leagues. Yesterday Dr. O'Reilly received the following reply. 10 DowNING STREET, | ‘WairenaLs, May 10, 1882, § Sir—Mr. Gladstone duly received the telegram which you sent to him on behalf of the St. Louis Land League, in ecmmestion WLl WG suides Uf Lusd Frederick Cavendish and of Mr. Burke, and he desires me to say that although he is unable to acknowledge separately the multitude of expres- sions of sympathy which have beenad- dressed to him, he cannot refrain in this case from adding to his genoral thanks published in the newspapers that he is deeply touched by the com- parison which you have made with the case of President Lincoln. 1 am, sir, your obedient servant, HoracE SEYMOUR, Dr. Tuoymas O'REtL Milwaukee Sentin A large num- ber of people in this city have used that wonderful remedy, St. Jacobs 0il, for Rhematism with effect truly Frequent meports are made where suffercrs have been atford- od relief, and the sale is growing largely. The fact that this is an ex- ternal remedy, commends it to many who would not otherwise think of going out of the beaten track to finda remedy. —_— A Thrilling Sight. Corinth Correspondence Saratogian, On Sunday large delegations of lumbermen from Glens Falls drove here to see the great jam of logs that had collected in consequence of the dam ecross the river at the head of Palmer Falls, Large numbers from other sections were here, and all day the bank of the river was lined with people watching the great jam. KFrom a point near the Bosworth barn to the am at the falls was one continuous jam of logs, From the upper end of the jam to the dam it is about three-quarters of a mile, and there is ome hundred feet full The water through this cut in the rocks of necessity is very fast, plung- ing maaly down the stream, A great sortion of the way is one grand boil- ing chasm, yet this had become cov- ered with logs, and that mighty roar- ing, that never had been stopped for one moment from the commencement of time, was still and heard no more, As the sun was sinking behind the the western hills one grand crushing, gissing, rumbling, thundering, sound aross from the river, Hun- dreds of men, women and children rushed to the ledges to see what had caused such a commo- tion. On arriving at the river, they found that the great jam had started from the upper end. This gave the pent up waters a sudden release, and np power could hold it back any longer, consequently the entire jam became one grand moving mass, crashing its way through the narrows, When they went over the dam, they were from eight to ten logs high, piled on top of each other. After tak- ing the plunge of thirty feet over the dam, then they made the grand jump of eighty feet over and down the falls, People living four to six miles from here distinetly heard the thun- feet high. The ecene witnessed on Sunday occurs but once in a life time, No one was hurt, and no damage has been done, e . The Model Sexton Josiah H. Haywood, sexton Church of the Uity, Boaton. I cently celebrated his silver wedding Among the incidents of the festive o3 caion was the reading of a letter from the Rev. M J. Fish Farmiog. By attaching a pump, propelled by the wind, to a well, says the St. Paul Pioneer Press, you can supply a basin from 50 to 75 feet in diameter, and six to eight feet deep, with water sufli- cient to raise several thousaud carp or other fish. The cost of this pond and appurtenanoes need not exceed $75. The bottom and sides need to be cemented thoroughly. When the basin is complete place in it a small quantity of brush or floaung wouds, If you intend to raise carp, do not place ether fish of predotory character in the pond The spawning will occur during the spring months, the female laying from 50,000 to 500,000 eggs. The eggs will ad- here to whatever they touch, and will soon hatch, She green ecum of a par- tially stagnate pond 1s fine foud ~tor the young fish, Mud in the bottom of the pond is bencficial. The fish will feed readily on kitchen garden refuse, such as cabbage, leek, lettuce, hominy or other substan Water seldom becames too warm for theme fish. Daring freezing weather thoy bury themeselves in the mud at the bottom of the pond. While in this conditiou they should not be disturbed. Tn a pond of given dimensions several thousand fish have annually beon taken. If weeds and grass grow profusely about the bor- ders of the pond, so much better f-r the fish, Tu two years' time you can have a constant supply of sport and food, and the advantage of a pond to aseist in beautifying your home. The National Sewing Machine Co's superintendent, Mr, Frank Dean, Bos- ton, Mags., writes: My wife used St. Jacobs vil for pains in the bask and was immediately cured. I was cured of rheumatism by it. All along the road through thjs region one sees many cat- tle and soon learns the meuning ot the accounts, so often repested, of cattle being able to, “live out all winter, without feed or shelter.” They do live 80; that is, some of them do. Mauny die from starvation, I saw their bodies everywhere, and many-of those still alive were wretchedly emuciated. Hundreds of them were, to use an expressive Southwestern phrase, “‘on the lift;" that is, when they laid down they were 80 weak that they could not get up; but if they were helped to get up they could walk about and feed, until weariness or weakness prompted them tc lie down again, when the process had to be repeated. I saw great numbers of dead animals in the pools and ditches, where they had gone to drink, and being too weak to struggle through the mud they had tallen into the water and been drown- ed. The owners appeared generally to hold the same cheerful philosophy with a man with whom I talked at Corinth, Migs,, who thought he did not lose much when hundreds of his sheep died for want of food and shel- ter, because, as he said, ‘‘we git the wool,” 8o those Toxas cattle wmen seemed satisfied with the hides. “Hundreds and thousands of the cat- tle die when the new grass begins to dering and crushing of logs as they d over. I should not like to express my opinions upon such matters so forcibly us Southern men express theirs every- where, 4 Mr. A, V. Said a young broker with a dis- heveled hair and glowing cheeks: “I have just come from the board, and I tell while I was there everyihing was whirling and the uproar was deafen- ing. Idid not expect that sort of thing. T was elected a member of the exchange only this morning and I had not intended to begin busiuess so soon; but at noon I noticed that the tape was coming out very slowly, with a sale at rare intervals of two bonds or twenty shares of stock, or some- thing of that size, and in view of the extreme dullness I thought it would bo & good time to make my debut, I would not be conspicuous for idleness when nobody had any, orders. Either T made a mistake or somebody gave notice of my approuch, for when, with 1y new gray suib carefully smoothed, my hair exquisitely brushed and my nohby hat balanced T passed through the ®outh entrancs on New street, every eye seemed to welcome me gayly, and such a shout arose that I pansed just inside thoroughty abashed. 1 was about to lift my hat, but it an- ticipated me and flew twenty feet high to the middle of the room This act of politeness made me a favorite at once, and hundreds of strong arma seized me, 1 went forward sur- rounded by a dense, shouting mass of men, What they were saying I could not make out, but T gathered that at least 100,000 shares of stock were offered to me or asked of me. Fora while I smiled with great energy and kept a bothered look-out for my hat a8 I was whirling swiftly over the floor; but it was not long before m{ look like mine, but my name was in it, explanation is that the cattle, weak from long starvation and ravenous with hungry, eat excessively of the fresh grass, They have no *‘dry feed” to serve as & corrective, and the sur- feit on green food kills them, The a little,” E——— When you with Bheumati Gr with Neuralagia labor; Be sure to use St. Jacobs Oil, Aund then—go tell your neighbor, BATHING HOUSE!
