E i | | | it 2 (ITHE DAIIJ BEE---~']‘UE§!)AY MAY 23 1882, TALK ON TOXICOLOGY. Trialof the Accused in Clay Oounty’s First Murder. The Analytical Evidence of the Chomist Who Proved the Poisoning. Correspondence of The Bes. Oray Centee, Neb,, May 18, —The trial of the first murder committed in Olay county is coneluded; that of An- derson for poisoning Johnson last June with arsenio. The chemist, Prof. Olark, of Satton, who made the analy- sis was on thewitness standfive hours, teatified on direst examination as fol- lows: That he based his conclusions that deceased came to his death by arsenical poisoning from: First, the manner of death; second, the patholo- gical conditions revealed by the antop- sy; and third, quantity of arsenic pres: ent in the viscera. The very interesting featuro of the onse was the CHEMICAL EVIDENCE by Dr. Clark, a synopsis of which is given. The inquiry was directed 0 the determination of: First, the exist- ence of poison qualitative; and second, the quantity inthe viscera, quantita- tive, The liver was first examined by making a solution of one-fourth of 1t by digesting the same in distilled water, acidulated with hydrochloric acid, and subjecting it to the Marsh hydiogen test, and then subliming the arsenicum from the hydrogen ar- senide gas on cold poreelain, in a mir- ror like deposit. To these deposits were applied a solution of ocalcime chloride and heat, being differential tosts, excluding antimony and carbon. This settled one proposition in toxicol- ogy as applied to this case that ab- sorption of the poison through the cir- culation must have taken plase. The whole weight of the stomach, its’ con- tents and the duodenum_ was twenty- two and a half oz, av. Twelve ozs. of this were takon and placed inan evap- orating dish and digested in_distilled water acidulated with hydrochloric i d hitered. The Marsh test ain applied revealing the pres- ence of arsenie. The arsenic being then in solution was precipitated with acurrent of washed hydrogen sulphide. A portion of this precipitate was evap- orated to dryness in a amall evaporat- ingdish, coliected and placed with black flux in_a reduction tube and heated. The sublimate of arsenioum which re- sulted was returned to a tube open at both ends and heated in contact with air, the oxygen of the air converting it into octahedral erystals of white arsenic as revealod by the microscope. Reasoning by exclusion, this disting- uishing differential test excluded the sulphides of tin, cadmium and anti- mony and demonstrates beyond a doubt that the precipitate was arsenic sulphide. The precipitate was placed upon a filter which had been previ- ously dried in a drying oven and its weight recorded. 'The filter contain- ing the precipitate was again returned to the drying ovgn as long as it lost weight, and again weighed. The in- creased weight, viz: 8.64 grs,, showed the amount of arsenic sulphide pres- members vote for him, with the view of keeping them trom some other man who was not a railroad man. Which he did. Then he goes to Messrs, Paddock, Dundy, Weaver and Van Wyck and says, “I have five votes which I can throw wherever I wish, 1If you will agree to give me the naming of the appointees for the different positions in tho southwestern part of the state, so I can further my chances for congress from tha# sec- tion, 1 will throw them over to you.” But they each refused until ho came to Van Wyck, the ‘‘anti-monopoly sonator,” who at once agreed to the proposition, Now the Hon. () ‘‘Jim” is sug- gosting to the “‘anti-ratlroad senator” who should bo appointed postmaster at this place and others, and the route agents over the B. & M., f-r they don't want a man to runon their road unless he is a Laird man and will wso his influence to get him elected to congress. We have a good postmaster, it is not him we are complaining of but it is the man who was instrumental in having him put there, for Van Wyck said, “If you will get Jim Laird to recommend any other man I will see that he is appointed.” How does that sound coming from a U. 8, senator, and an ‘‘anti-monop- olist at that?” A young man here, one of the best of our city, sent in an application with the best of references, for route agent. Senator Van Wyck sent the application back to *“Jim” and asked if he should approve and send it to the president. The Hon.(7) James wrote across the face of it ‘‘Not by a Dam sight,” simply becaus he did not think he could control his vote and influence. Now, Mr. Editor, don’t you think we ought to go in heart and hand for this man for congressman from this part of the state? He is attorney for the B. & M. R. R., to be sure, but that will only give him prestige you know, and of course he would ~ legislate for cheap freights and equal taxation, not haye the railroad bed taxed $10,- 000 per mile and the company pay their taxes on it, while wagon roads are taxed with the farms adjoining, and the farmer, who is making money hand over fist, pays his taxes without feeling it! Why not have the railroad taxed with the land adjoining as the farmer gets the benefit of the road? Oh, yes! we think he is just tha man we want—to stay at home—and dole out free passes to securs votes, for we do not know how some men, near about here, would get along if our ‘‘Gieames” was to be taken away from u 8, But, Mr. Editor, I guess we will not lose much sleep over this matter, as he has faled tho last two years to get to be a delegate to the state con- vention (ot which he is so fond) from this county, except when he could buy a proxy. Ho cannot carry this coun- ty for road supervisor, lat alone con- gress. But he is trying hard to make the peopla think he is *“Lord of all,” but he has thus far failed most signal- ly, and it is the hopes of your corres- pondent and a host of others that this man will be shown up to the public in his true light. . You may hear from me again, for “the halt has not been told.” . Yours, fraternally, “‘ALLIANCE. ent in 12 ozs. Then by the following proposition its relative chemical value was de termined in the form found in the drug stores, i. e. white oxide, as fol- lows: As the cowbining number of ar- sonio sulphide is to the combining number eof arsenious aeid, o is the number of grains of arsenic sulphide obtained, i. e.,, 8064 grains to X, which is 6.95 grains of whits i found in the twelve ounces' used. Again by a chemical problem we reach the amount of arsenio in the whole stomach in this way : 12:22.5 :: 6.95 gr. are. to X, Which gives us the astonishing amount of 13.03 grains of white ar- senio in the stomach. This represents the amount of surplussage of arsenic left after death had resulted by ab- sorption ef the poison, Judge Weaver charged that the jury must, in cases where the evidence 'was wholly circumstintial, be satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt of the t or innocence of the acoused be- ore they could bring in a verdict of guilty or acquit, The jury, consider- ing that there might be conspiracy be- tween the wife of Johnson and Ander- son, the accused, who might be impli- cated, chose to acquit rather than in- fliot the death penalty, but would have agreed to manslaughter had the statate been otherwise than impera- tive, In this, our code should be amended. 1n this case a ghastly mur- der was conceded and it lies between Anderson and Mrs. Johnson and may include both is the verdict of public opinion, Bagley & Bemis ably ma sged for the defense. District Atto) n‘:f' Morris, for the state, showed a culture in chemistry ana pathology that would be a grace to a college pro- fessor. ) Three boys under seventeen were sentenced to the penitentiary for three years each for horse stealing.
