Condition of the Crops and .. Other Farm News. Building Progress—Personal Notes Political Paragraphs, Correspondence of The Bee, ALma, Neb., May 15.—The gen- eral appearance of the surrounding country for this season of the year is better than it has been since I876. Our winter gave us abundance of moisture, and the spring has not been slow in giving forth her portion of the beautiful fluid for the nroduction of crops. Rye and winter wheat are heading beautifully, and the earliest will apparently be ready for harvest by the 10th or 15th of June. For almost three weeks past we have had cool, damp weather, which has caused all small grain to stool out and gives a thick, heavy mat of young grain all over the ground. If the season is as favorable from this out as it has proved to be thus far we will have a very rich crop of small grain, Most of the corn has been planted some time, and a great deal of corn is up nicely. Live stock is doing nicely. The sheep raisers are having splendid luck with their lambs, losing but few Shearing has not commenced yet. Cattle are growing fat on the rich nutritious grasses of the valley; yet we have some difficulty in procuring first-class beeves for home consump- tion. I think the difficulty will be re- moved soon, This failure of keeping fat beeves was occasioned from the lmuitfy of corn; while cattle kept in perfectly good-growing order thsy were not kept fat. Corn is ‘‘way up” —81 per bushel. Alma is building nicely. The Shafer house has just completed its addition 40x40, and the Monitan has an addition of 20x26. We now have two as geod hotels as any town in the state of our size, and better ones than half of them twice as large. Our new school house is completed and school commenced Monday last with Mr. Chas. Stewart teaching the higher de- partments and Miss Conna Willis the primary. The school starts in as though it would bc a success, Our new postoftice building 24x44 is almost completed by L., B, McMannus, post- master, B. M, Simms has built an addition to one of his store buildings on Main street, and Sheriff Cave has filled it with groceries, C. L. Myers, confectioner, has also added a nice addition to his very complete estab- lishment, Dr. Geo. Deans 1s moving his residence from Republican City to this place and will hereafter prac- tice in Alma. Dr. Bawer, a young physician trom 8t. Louis, Mo., who has been looking over this part of the state for a few weeks, has located at Sacramento, Phelps countv Mrs. Morgan, our county school superintendent, held a teachers’ con- vention in the school room yesterday. From present appearance our saloon keepers will not take out license for the first half of Lhis year at lcast, there not beiog enough tiplers to compen- sato him for his labors after the license fee is paid, Politics scems to be very quiot. Our representative, Hon. Geo. Reed, is not in attendance at th oxtra ses- eion,” he being in New Mexico in the governuent employ filling a survey contract. Our most prominent can- didate for congress from what will be this district is Hon. James Laird from Hastings, The Farmers’ Alliance and Anti-Monopoly parties have done very little here, I suppose owing to the o | to Loutsville, youthfulness of the country. Pre- liminary, or rather informal steps were taken to start the woman's suffrage ball to relling Friday evening at the court room, A. R. Gage, the prominent hotel keeper of Republican City, will take charge of the B. & M. eating house at Red Cloud when it ia completed, and J. Strow of Oxford, I understand, will take charge of the one at McCook. PruLis. Woman's True Priend. A friend in need is a friend indeed. This nonecan deny, especially when assistance is rendered when one is sorely afflioted with disease, more particularly those com. plaints'and weaknesses 8o common to our female population, Every woman should know that Eleotric Bitters are woman's true friend, and will positively restore her to health, even when all other remedies fail. The following extract is from the log book of a Miesissippi River steam- boatman: During the Iate war I was engaged as engineer on board a government transport. Im- mediately on taking charge of the new boat I was ordered to raise steam, and when we were all ready orders came to back out. We were under sealed orders, which on being opened, proved to be instructions for us to go to Vicksburg and there tako on 300 wounded soldiers and transfer them Our down trip was un- attended by anything more than a stray shot now and then from the guerrillag in the thicket. We were at the foot of Island thirty-seven when tho incident occurred that prompted me to write this sketch, an incident that caused my blood to al- most freeze in my veins as my fancy wanders back to the time, when I saw death staring me in the face and me powerless toavoid it. I came on duty at 2 o'clock at right, and as I walked d)wnthe guardafeelingofindescribab'e loneliness seemed to seize my fancy, and in spite of all myeflorts to throw it off it seemed {o increase as I neared the engine-room, I entered the en- gine-room, and, us far‘as I could see, everything was in good order and my partner was in splendid spirits and Jokingly said: *Don’t blow her up with all these people on board.” I was at that time an old; and ex- ruriencod engineer, with an estab- ished reputation for skill, and the admonition rather confused me, felt sure the same feeling had taken possession of my partnor that haunted me; however, I made no response, but proceeded to inspect the machineey, a8 was my custom. I might have been an hour looking around, when looking up I saw a wild-looking man appear in the engine-room door, wear- ing the uniform of the Confederate army. I paid no attention to him, but went on with my duty. Present- 1y I thought 1 heard some oneslipping up to me. I turned my head and saw the man standing near me with an iron wrench raised over my head. I raised my hand to ward off the blow, but too late; only a dull dizziness and I knew no more. When I came to I saw a sight that almost paralyzed me; there I was, bound and gagged, while the man that struck me was watching the steam guage with eagerness, and which al- ready indicated a pressure of 176 pounds, The ‘““doctor” was stopped. As I opened my eyes they caught the of the eoldier who with & maniacal laugh, said: ‘‘There’s a boat after us, and I am going to keep ahead of her. This boat don’t make steam casy, s0 I thought I would stop the “‘doctor,” and he laughed again at his own perspicuity, Greav heavens, was it true that I was bound byamadman, who imagined he was racing with an- other steamboat, and wasraising more steam in order to win the race? I knew that ina few moments a horrible explosion must inevitably follow and hundreds of people probably be killed, What if he should happen to change his fancy and sturt the ‘dector.’” Steam increased until it indicaled 210 pounde. Theld my hreath and closed my cyes. Eagerly the mad soldier noted the increase of steam, winl, with a fiendish look, said, I gucss Tl start the ‘doctor.’” T saw hin put his hand on the throttie valve, saw tho * Joctor” start withfa thuwp that fairly shook the whole boat. and for several seconds the “‘doctor’ run, but was not throwing any water. T held my breath, expecting to be hurled in- to eternity, when I saw the other en- inerr enter the door, At a glance he aw it all, and with a well directed blow felled the maniacto the floor, In. stant orders to haul fires sived us, and wany a prayer was offored up for our sufe doliverance, The man that came 5o near blowing up tho boat had once been a steamboat engineer, but, going into the army received a wound inthe head from which he lost his rea- son, On this night he had escaped from his guard, —[Cincinnati Gazette, A Reunoyating Remedy be found in Burpoox Broop As an antidote for sick , female weaku billious- nees, indigestion, constipation, and other diseases of a kindred nature, thene bitters are invaluable.
