A Flourishing Center of an tAgricultural Country. Representative Business Men, Inter- eats and Hotels. Correspondence of The Bee. Sueiny, Ia, May 9.—Shelby is pre-eminently & grain town. The wheat crop was light this season, but the corn was a very fair crop, and this 800 inhabi- tants, in the southwest corner of Shel- by county, has this season, shipped over a half million bushels. One of the first things that takes the atten- tion of the stranger when he is landed on the platform of the Rick Island station, is the three steam elevators, and the acresof ‘‘corn criba to the rght of us” and ‘‘corn cribs to the left of us” at each end of town. THE TOWN was built after the railroad station had been located here, and much credit is due to Mr. J. P. McEwen, an early resident and business man, who handled the land interests for the rail- road company. Mr. McEwen was a man of energy and sterling integrity, and labored faithfully to secure agood class of citizens to make up this young villiage. Being a strong temperance man, he brought his_practical ideas into good use when he was applied to for land by parties having the symp- toms of habits that were not temper- ate, for it is said he managed to get diucuurugmnenu enough in the way of such persons to induce them to go else- where; atd now that six moons have passed over his grave, his neighbors begin more fully to recognize his worth and honor his judgment, and a monument worthy of his life is being erected to his memory. The railroad ruus along the low lands, nearly through the centre of the town, which is ecattered along the slopes on either side. The business etreets are on the east side, and like Third and Fourth streets of Cincinnati, run along the side hill. The comfortable churches, 5,000 union school building, three tirst-class steam elevators, two lumber yarde, two hotels, and a score or two of good trading houses, good farming lands on every side and the whole pop- ulation intelligent and industrious, with progressive ideas, and a town council that says ‘‘no license,” are some of the characteristics of this thriving and prosperous young city near the headwaters of Silver Creek. REPRESENTATIVE MEN from Omaha and the Bluffs are seen here every day. Mueller is. here mending the organs and selling new town, of perhaps 600 or contracted for a new chursh to cost $£10,900. Gov. Sherman has coneented to ad- dress a scldiers’ reunion at Novada next August, Thomas Harrison, the sensational boy preacher, will bo an attraction at Clear Lake July 5-11. The Sigourney ereamery began operations last week. The Review is highly olated over the fact Atlantic must subscribe stock to the amount of §15,006 before she can got the Holly system of waterworks Tho Mitchell county papers record the fact that echool teachera are scarce there and that many mors are wanted, the Work has commenced on now Washington hotel at Cherokee. The improvements involve an outlay of £15,000. Emma Meeks, a young woman at Marshalltown, attempted to commit suicide the other day by takinga dose of poison, An old man named Thayer was found drowned in a creek near Wash- ington. An empty whisky flask was found in his pocket. A brute named_ John~ McClinthon was run out of Montrose because he attempted to rape his own sister. He went to Keokuk An insane man in Polk county has become impressed with the idea that another flood is impending, and he 18 engaged 1n building an ark. Mrs. Leovi Kettering, of LaPorte City, committed suicide by jumping into an old well. She had been in- save for several days past. CLAPP is one of the keavy dealers in general merchandise, and with the addition he is building, will have a store 110 feet long and metropolitan in its ap- pearancs, while W. F. Cleveland & Co., just across the way are doing a large business, and either one of thess houses may be doing a $50,000 busi- ness, which seems strange when there 18 80 much competition. . The mill is one of the models, Every particle of wood work in the mill 18 planed, and all the machinery is supposed to be the latest and best, and even the whoat is all cleaned and then polished with a set of brushes before grinding, and the citizens may well feel proud of this as well as many other of their business enterprises. ' THE HOTELA are peculiar. Dr. Benham near the depot has fitted up his tine house with trees and flowers, and the stranger would be like'y to pass it as the resi- dence of some retired merchant, for it is to all intents and purposes a "home, Mr. F. 8. Gilliland, of the Central House, has just put on a second addi- tion and proposes to keep doing so until he is able to aecommodate the trayeling public who desire to stop with him, It would be inleresting, if time and space would permit, to mention many of the business firms and indivual friends of Tnr Beg, and the amount of business; but your correspondent would roturn thanks for kindness ro- ceived at the hands of the mayor, John Sandkam of the firm of J, Dow & Co., grain merchants, and 1. ¥.
