Life in the Midst of Death- Statuary Hall Desecrated by Dancing Statesmanship and Stom- ach Aches, Correspondence of The Tes, Wasnixaron, D. C, May 10.-- What a strange existenco this life at the national capital 18, Yesterday we woro carrying umbrellas to shield us from the damp cold rain; to-day we are carrying umbrellas to protect us from the hot sunshin Yesterday the president of the United States bowed his head in eol- oun grief, s bacometh one in his sta- tion, whilo the sad funcral rites wore being performed over the silver- trimmed, flower-bedecked rosewood cofling of the beloved dead Admiral John Rodgers and District Cormis- sioner Major Twining; to-day the president of the United States is he- ing banqueted and feted by the life- giving power of The Now York Herald, James Gordon Bennett, on board his beautiful, luxuriant yacht Namouna, which landed at the navy yard yes: terday, just as the salute of guns were being fired for the honored dead. and possibly the echo resounded in the cabin of the gilded yacht. Why not? Now she is gracefully gliding down the historic Potomae, freighted with distinguished guests, who spent their tears yesterday and are ready for smiles to-day. The same band that was playing funeral dirges yesterday, only last Saturday night, with just a Sabbath between, was playing gay music for the DANCERS UNDER THE CAPITOL, Can you think of anything more ghastly and ghoul-like than “tripping the light fantastic toe” on the cold marble floor of Statuary hall! Please fancy & voice from the tombs calling out *‘balance corners,” and as you turn to embrace the warm, palpitating form of some fair one, run against the lifeless, Vinnie Ream-Hoxie marble- clad, limp statue of poor murdered Lincoln, in & manner caleulated to make an iceberg of every vein in your body! While watching the dancers, with beads of cold sweat standing on their intellectual brows, who, no doubt, were cheerful descendants of gravo diggers, whirling in and out, around and about those ghastly chis- ellings of the mighty dead, one might be reminded of the “‘Spirit Waltz,’ and wonder if Beethoven did not witness or imagine such a scene to in- spire his wierd music! But one was brought back to earth again by the fair drummers, who could challenge Chicago for the belt, in their importunixzg you to buy something to eat from off the tables representing the different states of the Union (the south was not largely represented) spread out in the rotunda, and filled with all sorts of good things to eat, presided over by lovely women who, with their bewitching smile tempted you to gorge your spleen, all for poor Garfield’s sake, that a ‘‘Memorial hospital” might be built to shelter the sick. Under such circumstances the appetite wasn't very ferocious, Yet many a dollar was freely spent and the ‘‘Garfield Memorial hospital” company were satisfied. But what a place to eat, drink and be merry. Only a few short months ago the same seothing billowy crowd of humanity pushed into the rotunda of the capi- tol to take a last lovk at all that re- wained of President pinched, pain-withered corpse. Who could eat and dance with the memory of his terrible death so fresh in our hearts! There were those who did eat, and drink, and dance, and tho woman who wrote that beautiful poem, ““Watchman, What of the Night?” in memory of (ieneral Gariield, got her- solf up in a most picturesque style as a peanut vender. Such is life in the national capital. But isit decorous and decent to open the doors of such a grand ma- jentic building for any other purpose than that for which it was built—tho DOME OF THE congress of the United States? To think of making a ball-room and eating saloon out of the portals of the halls of congress should bring & blush of shame to our checks. For heaven’s sake do let us have one hullowed spot where the thud of dancing and smell of cooking food cannot pervade. In- deed the restaurants of both houses of congress should be abolished, so that while listening to some eloquent speech upon ‘‘high tariff”’ our thoughts aud attention need not be distracted by the odor of boiled cabbage and strawb sy short-cake stealing into the galleries, If our dignified states- men must have somcthing to ‘‘stay their stomschs,”—ard many of our congresemen are like children travel- ing, in the abspnce of nothing to do must be eating—why have booths built in the capitol grounds after the manner ot Barnum’s side shows, Congress is doing as well as can be expected, considering these are “apring fover” days. But Tur Beg's tull and complete dispatchos give you the doings of congress, so 1 need not go 1to “affairs of state, Now and then things occur behind the fringes which do not over the electric wines, I have my eye on these sly doings, and of such 1 will pitch my text the next time I address you, 2o i § Cox, N. B, Sinco writing the ui)no 1 loarn that *Jiw” Bennetts fancy yneht stuck in the mud ere it was out of mght of the city through the. akil ini piloting of one of our navy of- ficers. But that didn't turn ‘their stomachs, They had four hours in the hot, burning sun to eat and drink and lum! and then a friendly craft took them off and tugeed them home, ——— Gospel Truth, He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it, But he that trusteth to SPRING ],|un|rfnrn1nng h\nr,k)(n cowplaints of like tender disappe AL xl 0 50 cenls, trial b -Lne» 10 cents, mlddlw —— A Yersonal Reminiscence. May 9, Many of our readers will be inter- ested to know that in 1849 Lord Frederick Cavendish, who was assass- inated in Duklin on Saturday, made a tour through the United States, and, accompanied by Hon, Evelyn Anhley, visited Charleston, He remsined here about a week, and was recipient of many social Mwn ions, He was entertained by Mr, George Crafts Charleston (8. 0,) News, Mr (‘hnrh\- Manlnu" the Mesars, Gonrdin, and others, and visited Joh. ossie Island s the guest of Gov. Mark Twain (Samuel L Clemens), registered at the Southern hotel yes- terday, spent the day in looking at the principal points of interest about the city and noticing the numerous changes and improvements which have been made since he was here in 1864 Ho was not particulatly impressed with the delightful condition of the streets and pronounced them about as bad as any that could be tound in this country. He has been making a trip up the river from New Otleans, ro- freshing his memory regarding locali- ties and distances for use in compiling his new book which will be issued in about nine months. Ho registered as “‘Sumuel L. Clemens,” and it was as. tonishing how few of thoso who looked at the register recognized the auto- graph as that of the famous humorist. He was in the rotunda of thehotel for nearly an hour, and but two or three persons knew who he was. The casual observer failed to notico any- thing in the medium-sized, stoutly” built man with a gray ml\ll!tnch and eoft felt hat and a plain suit of gray, that indicated the humorist. In fact, he looked morelike a quict, woll-to do business man who never perpetrated a joke in his life and experienced more pleasure in funerals than in any other class of recreation. An cffort was made to interview him, but he fought shy of the interviewer and confined his remarks to .commonplace topics only. He left at 4 o'clock for his old home, Hannibal, Mo.; will remain thero for a day or two, and will then go up the river to St. Paul. Ho was accompanied a8 far as St. Louis by his pubiisher, J. R, O:good, of Hart- ford, Conn, A Vexed Clergyman. Even the patience of Job wonld become exhausted were he a preacher and endeav- oring to interest his audience while they were keeping up an incres<ant coughing making it impossible for him to he heard, Yet, how very easy can all this be avoided by simply using Dr. King's New Discove- ry for Consumption, Coughs and Coids, ’Irlm Bottles given away at C.
