Cleveland Leader, May 8 At the Clarendon hotel last even- ing a Leader reporter met Hon. W. F. Cody, whose exploits as a govern- ment scout and ranchman, and whose success on the stage in the principal roles of the stirring border dramas which, fill the threatresof the country, have rendered his sobriquet of ‘‘Buf- falo Bill” familiar to every resident of the United States, Mr. Cody con- cluded his dramatic season by a week’s engagement at New Haven, Oonn., and is now on his way to the North Platte country, where will put in the summer on his ranch. This, by the way, is QUITE A GARDEN PATCH, being thirty miles square and affording a pasture ground for Mt, Cody's herd of 6,000 cattle, Four hundred horses also exercise themsolves in this 000 love for you shall never falter, never fade, but always be ter, stronger, and more beautiful than before. Into that love I have woyen the best efforta of my life, and she to whom it is de- voted shall ever be the shrine at which my soul shall worship.” Unfortunately there was nobody with a clab in the immediate vicinity. ‘I can make pies,” said Gwendolen, smiling archly as she spoke. “Oan you, darling?’~ this inlow earnest tones. ‘‘Why of course,” responded the irl, “The,” said Ethelbert, calmly but firmly, ““don’t do 1t. Somebody that you liked might accidentally eat one of them.” Ethelbert now has a second-hand en- gagement ring for sale cheap. — A Soft Snap. Chloago Times, The legislature of Connecticut are taking the question of free railroad transportation for public servants right by the horns. A bill has been pasa- ed in both of the houses providing that ‘‘comptroller shall farnish at the expense of the state, to members of uare miles of paddock, and give &upflion to the blood-thirsty un- tamed gad fly of the northwest. Al- though wearied with a hard winter's work and much travel, Mr. Cody re- ceived his caller with the cheerful courtesy of the fromtler's man. A few years behind the footlights has done more to fasten the marks of age upon Mr. Cody than a life time of chasing bison and dodging bullets, in both ot which exercises he 1s an ex- fm His name, ‘‘Buffalo Bill,” was fastened to him on the evening of a day memorable in the annals of buflalo hunlingl, sixty-four of the ‘‘eritters” aving been MADE FOOD FOR CROWS by his rifle, within the space of ten hours. Mr. Cody's height exceeds six foet, and his form is as straight as the barrel of his gun. It is in his long wavy hair and Nspoleonic mustache and chin whiskers that the prints of time are most noticeable, and were it not for the lines of silver which ocour therein, he might still pass for a man of thirty years. “Whai success did you meet with during the winter!'jasked the reporter. “‘Excellent,” was the response. *“I don’t know that I have ever had a tyi;tr:i" will have nothing to do, so far as the | omaha & Sioux navy is concerned, except to draw | B.& M. If there ‘were anything wrong about the orig- inal transfer, I am inclined to have the matter adjudicated, not for my own sake, particularly, for I'm well fixed; there are others hoewver, who are not so well of, in a worldly sense,” “'If the matter be decided in favor of the Cody claimants, you'll settle down here, I presume,” “Hardly that, I was brought up in the west, l:lndtlljll: there is b'lo mu(il:l more agreeable than it ibly coul ‘e here, that I reckon I]gl stay there whatever may happen, T ought to be on my ranch now. Gwendolen had hit her corn instead of a croquet ball, and as the blow fell there came to hor such a feelin, of desolate loneliness, such a wistfi mmiu to howl and swear, that she looked into Ethelbert's eyes with her own dusky orbs and said, in the low, musical voice whuse every tone thrilled Ethelbert with a sweet, rap- turous, three-for 50-cents thrill, that mamma get supper—she loved so d-r&:«: p in all household mat. ters mamma had often said that whoever got her for a wife would to hire a girl—and a merry was trilled forth from between wine-red lips that Ethelbert had #0 otten made up his mind to kiss, then weakened when the time He bent tenderly and [lovingly over her now, listening to ev: word she and boliovrnx it all. The sentence of a court-martial and the action thereon of Secretary Hunt suggest the necessity of a society for the prevention of cruely to mn{ offi- cers. Passed Assistant Paymaster 8. D. Hurlburt was tried for drunken- ness, and convicted. A heartless court-martial sentenced him to five years’ suspension from duty on half- pay. The secretary of the navy was appalled at the terrible severity of this sentence, and mitigated it to the extent of raising the half-pay to three-fourths, The pay of a passed assistant paymaster, when on leaving | Ohlcago, B. & Q or waiting orders, is $1,600 for the rears, and $1,700 after five | Unlon ‘'or five years Mr. Hurlbut mself as best he can. The pay.is not munificent, but it will enable a man to live without suffering, and he has his time, and if that is money he may consider himself tolerably well fixed. For habitual drunkenness he is sen- tenced to lose one-fourth of his salary and on the remaining three-fourths to have a vacation for five years, It must occur to Mr. Hurlbut, as it did to Cain, that his punishmen is great- er than he can bear. Outside of the navy there are persons who are quite willing to work with reasonable as- siduity for the compensation that Mr. Hurlbut 1s to get for doing nothing, und to get a five years' vacation with three-fourths’ salary would strike a Rood manyland lubbers as a decidedly comfortable *thing, But in the navy it is a penalty imposed on a man for getting too drunk, and getting so too often. Precisely how drunk a man must get in the navy to be relieved of work with a continuance of salary is not explained. In the army there soems to be well defined degreos of | 5! intoxication, for in the trial of'd‘cap- tain before a court martial at Fort McKinney, recently, one of the wit- nesses testified that the accused was sober enough to perform the duties f officer of the day, but was too drunk to play d oker, Free of Cost. Every woman sat bolt u&rlght and every man saw something rougi: the opposite window. “Who put that niockel in?" contin- ued the driver in tones that racked every breast. Five women looked down on the floor, and seven men glanced suspio- iously at each other. “‘Beoause, whoever it was must put in a good one,"” said the driver as ne glared at each one in turn, The suspense was now .dreadful, The women began tobreathe hard, and four out of the seven men turned red in the face.
