He pleaded not guilty, and made the prosecution show its hand, but the witnesses were not lacking, and the court promptly found him guilty and fined him 820 and costs, which will cut down alittle f the profits of his bar on last Sunday’s business. It is rather a humiliating sight for acity of this size and standing to have one of its city officials thus arrested and fined for the violation of one of the city's own ordinances. It is still worse wken this man gains such po- litical control that he is paid a compliment in Mayor Bowe "|man’s inaugural, and an increase of his pay is recommended, and he is unanimously confirmed as chief by the council, fearing that if they did not do 80 he would be able to get many of the depariment to desert, and leave the city helpless, It is a strange state of affairs which will keep such a man thus bolstered up, and that those who would like to see him have less power are afraid to say so. Pav Lucey ehauld not be singled out, howaever, for prosecution. There are others who are likewise violating the same ordiuance for which he was fined. The experiments with the electric light in Dubuque have not been as yet entirely eatisfactory. An artesian well is proposed at Davenport for the purpose of getting a supply of purer water than the city now has, At Ida Grove the other day, while Fred Holler was carlessly examing a self-cocking revolver, the wgapon was discharged and the ball lodged in the thigh of Daniel Diltz, inflicting a dan- gerous wound. Scarlet fever and diphtheria are prevalent in LoMars. On the 25th Fred M_ Tomlinson lost a threa-year- old child by scarlet fever, and a re maining child was not expected to live. Thero have also been several deaths from diphtheria, A couple of Winterset attorneys en- gaged in a controversy in court a day or two since, One called the other a liar and smote him on the nose until the claret flowed down his beard, even Aaron’s beard, unto the hem of his garment, It is said that an effort will be made to disbar the heavy hitter. At Carroll the council ordered the removal of a building belonging to M. A, Hoyt, and the latter brought suit clniming $12,000 damages. After a iong and exciting trial, in which over sixty witnesses were axumlnod and the court expenses alone run up to more than $1,000, a verdict was found for the plmnufl' awarding him $2 390 aciual damages and 81,484 exemplary damages. The end is not yet, for the case will go to the supreme court. In Scott county a few days ago, a young man by the name of Irving Abey had been paying attention for a short time to a young lady, a school teacher, who boarded at the house of farmer John Larson. Abey made a soctal call, and before leaving asked the young lady to marry him. She modestly but firmly declined. This was more than the tender-hearted Abey could bear. He drew a revelver from his pocket, placed its muzzle at his temple a.d fired. The result was instant death. —_— Why He Took the "Iron-clad.” In the year 1861 there lived in one of the ses-coast counties of South Qarolina two neighbors, who'might be introduced to you as Tom Johnson and John Thomson, They were both large slave owners and ardent secessionists, and when Jeff Davis called for troops and money to aid in the establishment of the Southern Confederacy, none responded more ,l;‘umptly or more liberally than homson and Johnson, A cavalry compsny in Hampton's legion was raised in their vicinity, and both con- tributed a number o bluodud horses and equipments complete. They were both be; ayond the age for for active duty as soldiers, so thoy es- caped the conscription and remained on their plantations till the federal fleet under Commodore Dupont oceu- ;md Beaufort. As soon as Beaufort ell they both gathered up their slaves who had not fled tor refuge to the Yankees, and hastily retired to the in- terior of the state, Here they refu- geed until 1874, when things were be- ginning to look blue for the Jeff Davis dynaety, and thewr slaves had become « burden to them, Oae bright morning Johnson called on his ohf neighbor, and informed { AIH{IL év 1884, him that he prnpmed to return to his home on the coast and take possession of his old plantation, “Baut,” said Thomson, ‘‘the Yan. kee commander will not let you into possession,” “T'll manage that,” son, and off he went. Arriving at Port Royal he was ushered into the presence of the commanding officer, to whom he made known his wish, “Aro you a loyal ecitizen of Union?” asked the commandant I am,” emphatically replied John- replied John- the /ill you take tho iron-clad oath?" <1 will,” responded Johnson, The oath waspresented. Johnson's name was aflixed without delay, and the order was issued and he put in possession of his plantation, The news of .L\hnmvu'n good for- tuno soon made its way into the in- tericr, and his old noighbor Thomson, soon followed his example, and pro- sented himself at headquarters with tho request that the commandant would restore him to his plantation ‘‘Can you take the ‘iron clad’ oath?” asked the officer, “No, sir,” responded Thomson. “Then you ocan't have the planta- tion,” said tho Hfticer. i “But my neighbor ahd friend, Mz, Johnson, has had his plmmmnn re- stored to him howis it I can’t get mine?” “Hby took the ‘iron-clad,’ ” was th ply. Thomson retired, heartily wishing that all the Yankees on the American ontinent were reduced to one man, and that all the cannon in the world were in ome, and that cannon was charged with all the gunpowder and ball ever manufactured, and that hey the aforesaid Thomson, had that can- non pointed at that Yankee, so he could have tne proud satisfaction of blowing that concentrated Yaukee to thunder With theso feelings he sought his old reighbor, and fairly fuming with rage he hissed: *‘Did you take that infernal ‘iron- clad’ oath?"” “‘Idid,” quietly replied J ohnson, “Well, you know you did every- thing you could for the confederacy— you give money, provisions, houses and everything required. Will you please tell me on what principle of moruls you took that hell-fired oath?” “I will,” quietly replied Johnson; “T took it on the principlo that T had rather trust my soul in the hands of an all-merciful God, than to trast my plantation in thu hands of the G—d d—d Yaukees ” EDUOATIONAL NOTES.
