LIFTING THE LICENSES. [be Attemipt to Shove Salcon Licenses Up a Few Notches. Petitions Pregented For and Against. This community has been for some time agitated over the question of license, whether it shall continue at the present ridiculously low figure or be crowded up sufficiently high to clear out some of the low doggerels. At the meeting of the council next Monday evening a new crdinance is to be presented for the regulation of sa- loons, and places are to be left vacant for the council to fill i the amount which the aldermen may decide on as the yearly license. Much interest is felt as to what this figure will be, It has been rumored that some of the aldermen would vite for having the license at $1,000, and an isrue has sprung up on this. A petition was presented to the council Thuruday night last, urging that it be fixed at that amount. The petition wagsigned raising it to §1,000 was also presented, signed by about 1,1000 persons. by about $400. A petition against | are three of the aldermen who are vousnesa felt about the fact that pow- der houses are located inside the city The recollection of the dyna- mite explosion is still fresh in the minds of many, and from this it is oasily imagined that, should one of these powder explode, there would be another scene of ter- ror. One of these powder housesis lecated in “Duck Hollow,” and two others are located near the brick yards in the northwesterly part of the city. Those who reside near these feel somewhat alarmed about them, and have made frequent complaints, How is based on nervousness and limits. magazinos much < needless alarm it is difficult to deter- mine without a practical experiment, and that would, of course, be slightly dangerous, Tur Ber reporter took a tour of inspection yesterday, and made an examination of the powder magazines, as far as any such could be made from the exterior. The build- ings are of brick, and the doors’ cov- ercd with light sheet-iron, There are houses within the vicinity of each, but not very snug to them, and possi- bly they would not be injured by any explosion. Still tho occupants feel uneasy, and cannot very well be blamed for having nerves. There was only one noticeable fact geined by the inspection, and that was the door of every powder house had been ueed as a target for shooters to practice with, Every door was rid- dled by bullets, giving evidente that there are at lvast a few folks who are are 80 destitute of fear as to fire bul- lots at a powder house. The bullets have pierced the iron sheeting over the doors and left the pine interior exposed, nance contained shall apply to the re tail salo and delivery of any goods, wares, merchandise, groceries, meats or other things of any resident busi- ness man or any other person of the city of Council Bluffs, having and carrying on & regular placo of busi- ness in said city, from selling gooda as aforesatd from his place of business, or the sale of any articlos as aforesaid by any person or persons, agent or agents, of any toreign firm or busine:s houee,” etc, As many canvassers claim to be the Wants of the Public in FINE GROCERIES. With Everything in Staples at the Lowest Prices. Fre:h Roast Coffees, Chioce Drawing Teas. Boston Tea Co. 16 Main 8t, and 15 Pearl 8t., agents of seme publishing house or manufactory, there has been much mist covering the matter, Only yes- terday a man who was soliciting ~or- ders for suita of clothes, was brought to bay and requested to take out a peddier's license. He claimed to be the aathorized agent of a Philadelphia house, and concluded that a license was not therefore neceseary. To help out the dilemma, it has been discov- ered that two important worde have been left out in printing theord nance, they being ‘‘by wholesale,” so that the exemption clause would read, if properly printed, that ‘‘the sale of any article by wholesale, as aforesaid, by any person or persons, agent or agents of any foreign firm or business house”’ need not take out a license. With theee words inserted there is somewhat of a better show for making canvassers pay their license, and the officers seem bound to_enforce the ordinance stristly, and all found now soliciting orders are liable to be re- quested to show their papers. e ——e—— To the Temperance Workers of Potta« wattamie County.
