Des Moixks, April 15.—R. W, Stubbs, a prominent citizen of Polk City, and member of the firm of E; gleston & Stubbs, was murdered at 3 o'clock this morning, The murder of Mr, Stubbs has created excitement throughout the county. Special | ¢ dispatches from the = scene of the murder state that about 3 o'clock two burglars who had pre- viously visited other houses, effected an entrance into Mr. Stubbs’ house. The murdered man and wife were oc- cupying a room up stairs, Mrs, Stubbs was wakened by the noise, and immediately aroused her huuhnnd who arose in bed and inquired who was there. At this the burglar said: ‘‘Lie still, or you will be shot.” Stubbs then sprang out of bed. dark lantern was turned upon him and a pistol discharged, the bullet piercing his heart. He exclaimed: “You have shot me!” and fell to the bottom of the stairs, dead. The mur- derers fled, and mounting horses tied at the front gate, disappeared in the darkness, Mr. Stubbs was mayor of the town and one of its most popular citizens. His tragic death 1s greatly deplored. Vigilantes are out searching for the perpetrators of the deed. GOV, KIRKWOOD'S RETIREMENT, How It is Viewed at His Home In Towa. Towa City Republican, Even since the death of the lament- od Garfield newnglnper correspondents at Washington have been discussiug cabinet changes. After the resigna- tion of Blaine, Windom and Mc Veagh, the country expected that Prellddnt Arthur would not remove any cabinet officer. Whenever either of them de- sired to retire, he would nmplfi fill the vacancy, but not brin, ear any pressure to secure such vacan- cies. This supposed position of the new administration was highly com- mended by the press of the country, a8 a desire to harmonize all tho ele- ments in the republican party. Such a policy wasa tribute of respect to the martyed president, and hence met with a hearty indorsement. Mr. Ar- thur no doubt, conveyed the impres- sion that no further changes would be made. Secretary Kirkwood adminis- tered the affairs of his department with signal ability, and was becoming more and more acquainted with all its intricacies. Not a complaint has been heard, but press of both parties united in praising the honesty, integrity and efficiency of the the secretary of the interior. At the same time the Iowa delega- tion in both houses of congress assur- ed the president that Mr. Kirkwood's retention was unanimously desired by the republicans of this state. We re- gret to say, however, that the presi- dent has yielded to other influence: and has abandoned what was reglrdoti as his compromise policy. The Des Moines Register expresses the gener- al feeling 1n the words: ‘It trenches on Jowa ground and on Towa feeling. But while we regret to see the ablest man in the Arthur cabinet retired in Goy. Kirkwood’s resignation and while it seems strange to sce a man of his ability, power, history, and large experience and thoreugh acquaintance with politics and public affairs, re- placed with a man in noJrespect his equal, we still feel the full force of the fact that the president has the un- diaputed right to choose his own coun- selors, and also a plain duty to choose such as will be agreeable to him. We believe that the old war governor of Iowa would have been President Ar- thur’s ‘“Mascotte” if he had kept him. For he has more clear and far seeing wisdom, ank more sincere and well- balanced judgment, and more of sound and discreet counsel under his old slouch hat than the president has left in the cabinet altogether now. But we will not discuss thi In Towa there will be renewed and universal regret that Gov. Kirkwood in sacri- flcing his own wishes and obeying the desire of Garfield, gave up his senate for a place he did not want, and now ost all.
