THE DAILY BEE-COUNCi1L BLUFFS, IOWA, THURSDAY MARCH 9 ,882 THE DAILY BEE, SUBSCRIPTION RATES: By Carrler, - = = ~*~ 90 contsper By M C. E. MAYNE, Manager City Circulation, H. W. TILTON, City Editor, DIRTY OPPOSITION. The appearance of this page in yes- terday’s Bre rather surprised its friends and readers here as it was wanting in the usual amount of fresh local news. This news was closely gathered, and carefully prepared, as usual, for Tue Bgem " readers, but in transit to the office was stolen by some one evidently anxious to keep Tur Bre from giving the news. The local matter was afterwards mysteriously returned to the office in Omaha, but of course too late for use, This is not the first attempt made to thwart and halt the enterprise of Tar Bex. The skiff used in the interest of The Bek in crossing the river has twice been stolen, Such despicable tricks to interf re with the public desire to get and read Tur Ber cannot stop its growth, and cannot keep its patronage from increasing steadily. Every pos- sible precaution will be taken to pre- vent any further attempts of this kind to deprive our readers of the news, and steps will be promptly taken for the detection and punishment of the guilty parties. ki il MINOR MENTIONS, ~ There are only ten boarders now at the jail. —A slight snow yebterdsy gave a wintry COUNGIL BLUFFS. . | protected from storms. = | of sorrow and sympathy among the friends the dump they were insulted, and that so- ealled special policemen were as bad as the crowd standing about. Last week Msss Eddy was here visit ng her sister, Mrs. Gieorge Parks, and old friends, and her little daughter was in perfect health up to the time of Mrs, Eddy's return to Chicaco, About that time the litt'e one was taken sudden- ly and serionsly, ill, and in two days death ended all. The cases of the young men charged with rasing a row and shooting in Ander- son’s saloon some time ago, have been cor - tinued from time to time, and took one mora adjournment yesterday. the cases be- ing continued by Recorder Burks until Judge Aylesworth takes the scales next week, The sume young men were also to have a hearing before Justice Abbott yes- terday on the charge of assault with in. tent to kill, but these cases were alao con- tinued. —Frank Cotton, supported by B, E. Basye's dramatic company, is putting in & week’s entertainment at Dohaney’s, Mon- d y evening “‘Our Boys” was giveo. On Tuesday night the company presented “Divorced,” and last night Cotton appea}- ed as ‘“Josh Whitcomb,” The entertain- ments thus far given has been of a popular and taking nature, and the patronage is steadily incressing. Citizens Yeel Oheerful Over the Prospect of a Decent City Gov- ernment,. The A Chance Which Those Placed in Power Should Improve, On all sides are heard expressions of satisfaction at the result of the city election. Many would, of course, have been better pleased if certain ones of their particular favorites hadd been elected, but taken all in all there is a general contentment. This arises in part from the fact. that Vaughan was 8o completely laid out, he being 164 votes behind the nominees in the race, and that not one distinotive Vaughan candidate was elected. It arises also in part from the feeling that the new administration will be a great improvement upon the old, and there will be some marked changes in favor of decency and order. Mr. Bowman has been made mayor by a majority of 34 only over the re- smblicau candidate, Dr. Lawrence, {e must concede, and it is understood that he duly appreciates the fact, that had it not been for republican votes he would have been defeated. Did he need any incentive to exercising his prerogatives in a non-partisan manner this would prove a sufficient one. He will have for his council a body of men who, viewed from a political standpont, rank as five republicans and one democrat, another check to any partisan policy. These new al- dermen rank well as citizens, and tha; give promise of being one of the best boards had here for years. The new aldermen are: First Ward, Alexander Wood; Second Ward, D, F. The Charge is Read, Baill Fixed, ana the Accused Loocked Up, Yesterday afternoon Joe Botts, the notorious negro charged with being the chief participant in the Keg Creek assault and robbery, was brought here from Omaha heavily ironed and in charge of Marshal Morse, of this city, and Officer Edgerton, of Omaha, o was taken before Recorder Burke, who read to him the charge of assault with intent to kill, fixed the bail at 82,000, and continued the case until Wednesday the 1€th. Botts was un- able to furnish bail in any amount and was accordingly committed to jail. Botts learned here for the first time that Sturtenbacker, the man shot and robbed, was not dead, and that there was a possibility of his recovery. He knew that Walton, the important witness in the case, was lodged in jail here, but he did not have the satistac- tion of seeing or talking to him as the officers carefully placed them at a safe distance from each other 1in the jail. He has made several variations frora the story which he told as pub- lished in Tue Ber. He sticks, how- ever, to the main point, and insists that he was the least instead of the chief of the three offenders. Murra; and Doc Detter, alias ‘‘the Kid,” the two other participants, are still at large. * BLEOTION UGLINESS. Thomas Hills Badly Beatem and Bruised by Midnight Rowdies, A brutal assault took place near the corner of Broadway and Pearl streets on the night of the election. Mr. Thomas Hills was proceeding home- ward in company ' with two or three others, when a party of young fellows pretty full of budge, yelled out, “Hurrah for Vaughan.” Hills re- 7|W. W. Hehad aflidavits and in- formation that minors had voted; that manner in which it is conducted. W. S. Mayne has been chosen as city solicitor; John Clawsen as city treasurer; F. A. The new administration’ has a chance to do a grand work of reforma- tion, and the people expect it will be done. It may not be possible to stamp out completely and at once the gambling places, houses of ill-fame and saloons, but it is possible, and the people demand it, that the city gov- ernment shall so fearlessly handle all sorts of evils that indecency »=2 law- lessness may not rule. Virtuous womanhood and innocent childhood should have at least as much right uoon the streets as bawdyism and lawlessness, which is more than has been granted, for while obscenity and indecency have been allowed to have their own way to a large extent, virtue and innocense have not been protected from insult.
