i TSN —— ? I'HE OMAHA DAILY BEE: THURSDAY. MARCH 9 1882 e ——————————————— POLK COUNTY POINTS. Farmers Preparing for Spring | J- 1ee, aged &bout 12 years, fell dead ‘Work—Oorn and Cat- tle Rule, MoChne's Madases and Methode. - ‘Correspondence of Tie baw, SrroMssuRe, Neb,, March 3.—We are now enjoying very pleasant weath- er, and farmers are time in preparing their ground and sowing wheat and oats. There will be more corn planted in our county than ever before. The people have wisely concluded that corn is king in Ne- braska as well as in Towa and Tllinois; farmers are paying more attention to cattle and hogs and less to small grain. A fow of our leading farmers are in- vesting in sheep, but as thisis an en- terprise that is not so well under- stood, farmers are somewhat back- ward in taking hold. Broom corn is also an important factor in this coun- ty. Th mostly cultivated by our Ez:andinnvun citizens, and pays them handsomely as their highly cultivated farms will testify. The citizens of Stromsburg and vi- cinity were favored with a very able address by Judge Morris, from Crete, on the subject of universal suffrage. The judge gave many reasons why he believed in the doctrine of female suf- frage, and I have no reason to doubt his sivoerity. It was, however, sug- gested by one of our citizens that he could do much better if he would talk on the other side of the quesion. I know of no converts from the result, unless it is Beach, of the Republican, and this is only guess work. I am not able to substantiate it by any means. The editor of the Osoceola Record has ygdertaken to wipe out the Alli- ance in Polk county by some means. He has discovered that he had under. estimated his task, and, judging from his editorials the past few weeks, he improving the — an interesting speaker and draws andiencos. Correpondenze of ‘tho e Rexo, Wasnor Co., Nev., March 2.—Though your correspondent’s pen has been sheathed for sometime she will now resume her duty, and by the aid of one of our Washoo “‘zephyrs” will waft you a few jottings from this far-away mountain burg. It is just three years to-day since our interesting little town was de- stroyed by the fiery element, during one of the strong sea breezes that swoep through the Sierra Nevada's with so much force. THE WEATHER, To-day is o delightful spring day; violets have been in bloom for some- time, though the grand old moun- tanis are covered with snow. Farmers will soon commence plowy- ing here if the warm weather keeps up (which they are already doing at Big meadows), butin our sister state, California, roses are in bloom and almond trees are in blossom, as well a8 other flowers, fruits and vegetables, which we import here on short notice whe needed.. NEVADA INSANE ASYLUM in located about a mile from Reno, nd isa very large and handsome building completed a few days ago. 1t will soon be ready for ocoupancy. is feelipg exceedingly uncomfortable. His feelings come on him spasmodic- ally one a week. He feels exceedingly wrath and makes short work of every person who is taking any part in the Alliance movement. This fit scems to affect him with such terrible power that he slobbers clear over. He is not satisfied with attacking Alliance men 1n our own eounty, but also opens his wrath on the members of the State Alliance and their proceedings. This week the lion is transformed into a lamb, Innocent as a dove he comes creeping into the commiltee room, where a committee are receiving propositions to publish an anti-mo- nopoly newspaper and meekly offers his services to the'* dear peupfa” and tells them of his wonderful love for them. The committee very uncere- moniously sat down on our friend of the Record and his profession and the result was to produce another spasm, and the lion of a week ago was once uore on the warpath. I have desig- nated these sudden changes 1n our friend McCune as perindical spasms because it seems hardly reasonable for a rational man to change so oftbn in 80 short a time. However, some of our best citizens who have been acquainted with him for years past say it is natural for him to say one thing and do another and that he used to get head“marks (no doubt with a rod) at school for his abilities to change his mind in' less time than lnr other scholar. notice The Record has nominated Mr. Hill from Butler county as a can- didate for state treasurer: Now I have never met Mr. Hill and know nothing about him and hope he is a good man, but if the remainder of his backers are like The Record he is certainly a goner. The only show that the gentleman from Butler soun- ty has in our county is for him to proye that The Record made the an- nouncement against his will, which I trust he will be able to do. HAWKEYE, BLAIR BRIEFS. Business Plans for the Season—The Death Record . Unusually Large. Correspondence of Tus Bx. Braig, March 6.—The usual bysy and active throng seen on the streets of Blair have been somewhat lessened of late on account of the spring-like weather, which keeps the farmers busy at home preparing for spring seeding. Quite a number of our large farmers are already putting in weat. Nevertheless, the stranger coming to Blair finds an active, thriving, busy little city, where the rumbling of trains and the hammer and saw of the carpenter can bo heard from early morning until late at night. With the close of this season Blair will have at least three new brick blocks and an o] house second to none in the state, outaide of Boyd's, These build- | munities, it is refreshing to note such | up everything—scenery, already contractad for, plans | an instance of justice’s celerity in dis- | and some of tfi ings are drawn and ma or, The 8. On last Mon- day he reached Ogaillala about 10 a. m., being accompanied by Hon, Wil liam Neville, of this city, who in the absence of District Attorney Bier- bower, had been employed as prosecu- ting attorney. Judee G. W. Heist, of Sidney, representing Gray's defense, was also on hand. His honor im- mediately opened court, aud impan- neled a grand jury, which straightway found an indictment against Gray for the oftense with which he was charged. An adjournment was then made for dinner, after which the court rapidly impanneled a petit jury. The case was speedily pressed, though neither prosecution nor defense omitted any- thing which would benefit their re- spective sides. But the evidence was overwhelming against Gray, and despite the remonstrance of his counsel he confirmed his guilt, by a statement to the court. I went on, however, without saying anythin, until the performance was over, an then the manager, ‘seeing that I was downcast, asked me what was the matter. ‘‘Matter enough,” said I, considering whether I ought to tell him or not. ‘Is the money box stolen?” he asked, growinug verv pale. “Worse than that,” said I, ‘““In heaven's name, man, he exclaimed, clasping my arm, ‘‘what is it!” ““‘And thep I told him, He was as much upsct as I had been, and at first we both thought we were in duty bound to tell the company; but we were billed for Xenia on the next night and our advance agent had thoroughly prepared the town, so we agreed to say nothing until after the Xenia engagement was over, ‘‘Wall, sir, everything went well at Xenia until the last night, when I was again in the box office. ~ The first per- s0n to come for a ticket was a colored mav. Iknew then that it would be criminal negligence to delay warning the company of the danger, I told the manager, and as goon as the perform- ance was over we called the company together and related everything. © supposed, of course, that they would insist on disbanding at once, but it was a good, intelligent company, and, talking over the mat- ter for a couple of hours, we agreed to ‘‘burn the Jonah” and take our chances.
