Railroad and Political Gossip in Dead- wood—A Warning Against Wild Cats, Deadwood Correspondence St Pacl Pioneer Pross The cosmopolitan character of the city has been greatly elaborated by the recent arrival of a score or so of Sioux from Rosebud and Pine Ridge agencies, accompanied by long haired, swarthy complexioned, half-breed in: terproters, Indian agents, missionaries et id omne genus, with trapping of various and interesting kinds, their dogs, ponies, squaws, otc. These people are here as witnesses for or against Crow Dog whose trial for the murder of Spotted Tail will probably be called the last of the week. They are a curious lot, including old Spot's son, his widow and several dignitaries of the tribe, and as such have aronsed much curiosity and interest among the pale faced residents «f the hills, whose funii ianty heretofore with the noble red man, was of a charecter not altogether friendly. The Iudis of the city seem to have taker. tui.cy, or, to be more expressive, have becime “‘mashed,” aud are losing no opportunity for drawing the dusky visitors into so- ciety. The other evening a reception was tendered the reds by the ladies of 8t. John guild in the chapel, which was decorated and thronged . from early until late by people from far and near. The ladies sang, and, not to be outdone, so did the reds, after which refreshments were served- there is where the guests ‘“‘caught " 1f there is a particularly inter- on, esting sight, it is presented by a gen- uine, unabashed Indian endeavoring to place himself outside of a full grown sandwich. It is done in one time, two motions and a grunt of sat- isfaction. Thatis a religious set of heathen now in the city, and at this writing are, in a body, in attendance upon divine worship at the Episcopal church, and arein a very happy frame of mind owing to the fact that their champion dog scored another victory in a severe tussel with a cur belong- ing to a Chinaman this afternoon, which fight was witnessed by the tribe and hundreds of whites, the latter by special invitation, RAILROAD EXCITEMENT, Railroad excitement continues un- abated, and will doubtiess result in something more tangible than talk and paper lines, now that Laramie county, W, T., and the Union Pacific company have reached a positive understanding by which at least 100 miles or road from Cheyenne hill- ward's, must be completed by No- vember 1, 1883. This, Lawrence county, is the only one of the three that will aid in the construction of a railroad not altogether that Penning- ton and Custer counties are too proud to participate, but they fully appreci- ate the fact that the enmergetic people of the northern hiils are bound to have a road anyway, and that its benefits will flow to them as readily as though they manifested a little liberality, It ian't hardly the square thing for them to do, and Lawrence is thoroughly alive to the fact, but having started in for a road, a road, must be built. The probabilities are that the Hills will be in direct rail- road communication with Denver by July 1, 1883, CONCERNING STATEHOOD. Little is heard concerning statehood nowadays, as almost' every one has abandoned hope that congress will favorably act upon any of the many bills with which the solons at Wash- ington have been pestered during the past two months. The conflicting ac- tion of delegations from various sec- tions of the Territory; the Ordway- Pottigrew squabble and the capacity of office seekers have undoubtedly de- feated, temporarily at least, a very proper and beueficial measure. As & Territory, Dakota has prospered, and a8 a Territory she can, 1f needs be, re- main vntil congress, with better dis- position and greater regard for the rights and wishes of numerically a large people, shall see fit to open the door for admission, A BIT OF HISTO RY. Samuel McMaster, under whose superintendency the Homestake com- panies have, during the past four years, been 50 marvelously success- tul, departed for San Francisco last ay, owing, as the local press announced, to “‘poor health.” Whether.or not thess home journals believed such to be the case I awm un- able to declare, but certain it is that Mr. McMaster did not depart for that reason or any other, except that his resignation was called fer and ten- dered. An interesting chapter might be written in this counection, if re- striction as Lo space would permit, it will not, however. Hence to sum water as was used in running the mills must b paid for at so much an inch, Realizing that they were caught where the hair was very short, they met the demand, and must continue doing #o or hang up their stamp. Of ocourse the mining companies ‘‘kicked,” and, of course, the ater company laughed up its sleeve, but the first mentioned concluded to grin and en- dure the imposition. Encouraged by success in the water move, and per- ceiving another opportunity for a big thing in the item of fuel and mine timbers, MoMaster and Hearst quietly (of course) organized what is known as the Black Hills Railroad Company, for the construction of a railroad from the mines to the dense woods twelve miles distant, and by the time this work was completed, timber in the vicinity of the mines was very scarce, and the railroad company placed in position to again dictate to the Homestake company, and, please understand, it was anything but mod erate in its demands. The Home. stake, although again forced to accept, concluded that its 10,000 hired man was altogether too enterprising, and that a change would be to its advan tage, hence the resignation of Sanuel, or, as the local press insists, Samuel’s poor health. McMaster ocame into the Hills a poor man. He is now worth at least $300,000, acquired, mind you, in the last tive years, BRIEFLETS, The Sittivg Bull mwelteris the larg est kind of a maguificent success, and insures the permanency of the milvir mining industry of the Hids. [is} first clean-up, amounting to about $13,000, was reported to The Pionenr Press at the time. Tws second ship ment, comprising three car loads of base bullion, will be forwarded to Omaha to-morrow. By the way, look out for “wild cats ' Onr or two escaped from the hills lutely and disappeared in the vicinity of St. Paul, Milwaukee and Cnicayo. Thero is any quantity of good property in the Hill, and also not a little that hasnovalue whatever, and strange as it may appear, the lat- ter is generally picked upin preference to that of good quality by sharpers who aim to flood rhe stock market. Many signg combine to show that that the ancient political mariner (Mr. Tilden, of course,) is setting his sails to catch the presidential breeze tor 1884. ‘‘His physical disabilities are on the increase,” says one of his inti- mate acquaintances. He has lost, almost wholly, the power of using one arm, and the other is partially para- lyzed. His voice is gone. His legs erform not their offic’, His hear- 1ug is fast becoming a lost art. His liver needs repair. There are six or seven other defects in his physical ar- rangements These are ‘‘on the in- crease,” his admirers admit. But what of that? What the country needs most in a president 18 not a good pair of legs, nor a stout pair of arms, nor a basso profundo voice, nor acute hearing organs, nor a well conditioned liver. What it most needs as a mental apparatus. Here is the ancient mari- ner's strong point. ‘“‘While his physical disabilities are on the in- crease, his mind continues clear and fixed on his own pet idea of hnv'mp the great fraud of 1876 made right.” In proof that his mental apparatus is all right, it is stated that “he still retaine his tremen- dous cautiousness in relation to public affairs.” A party who re- cently called to ask his opinion on some public matter says that ‘‘the ancient paralytic hobbled with him through three rooms, locked the doors of each after him, until he had put three locked doors between them and any listeners, and then took him into a corner, hehind a curtain, and whis- pered to him.” Tf this is not sufficient proof that Tilden’s intellectual ma- chinery is in a perfectly normal con- dition, snore is furnished by the fact that he 18 building an enormous addi- tion to his house in Gramercy park, so that, in an emergency, he may be able to place six or seven rooms and locked doors between him and those who might overhear an expreasion of something resembling an opinion on a public question. Still another evidence that his mind 18 in its normal state is that his cam- paign for 1884 is to be conducted on the famous Latin maxim, ‘‘Cwsar aut nihil,” He proposes, ‘‘as Jong as he lives, to defeat any candidate the democratic party may take up, if they pass him by in 1884.” Seelug that, up the cause for the rupture in the domestic affairs of the great monopoly, I find thav what is generally velerred to as ‘‘the Home- stake company,” is in realivy six dis tinet corporations, the aftairs of which at the mines »ere entrusted to Mr, McMaster, who, by the way, received a salary of $10,0008 year and ex- penses, in addition te having been ““let in" at the original distribution of stock, which is now drawing regular monthly dividends. In this mauner of the six companics aes did also bis daiond, Guorge Hemo, civ ol i shrewdest operawrs ovu tho slope, MoMaster no sooner reached the hills than he perceived that the key to the ritnation here rested iu Lue water Buppl, which at no time is oversbundant, and he at once st about in his quiet way securing cou- trol and finally accomplished hus pur- pose, but, although paid by his em- ployers, and handsomely, for looking out for their interests, there valmablo water nights were vested in the Buck Hills Water company, and not i the ‘‘Homestake,” ‘Ihe water company, the principal members of which are 0.
