"| The =ewer Men Join the Ranks of the Strikers The Fight for Wages on Which Men Can Live. The situation between the striking Iaborers on the B. & M. grading con- tract and Contractor Stepenson as- sumed a more serious appearance this terday. The announcement that there would be men on hand who would work resultod in a large and enthusiastic crow( being assembled on the spot at 6:45 a. m. Further at- tempts at negotiation between the contractor and the men rosulted in accomplishing nothing. The men wanted $1.50 per day and declined to accept 81 40 which was offered them. THE PARADE, After considerable parleying the men formed in double line, and after sccuring the Bohemian band marched to Stephenson’s brick barn on Tenth Jdummy rigged up to represent the man who would work for $1.25 a day. Tt was stated to have been the intention to carry it through the streets and then burn it, but before that could be done some of the men demolished it entirely and scattered the remains in the street. THOUBANDS OF BPECTATORS, The sound of a band of music at so early an hour in the morning attracted considerable at- tention from the main streets and when | & fow minutes later the striking work- wen marchod to the Poppleton corner there was at least three or four thous- and people there. The sidewalks were black and windows everywhere cur- tained by a throng of heads. The men carried at the head of the pro- cession a red flag on which were the words, riking for $1.75 per day.” this being the amount de- manded after the refusal to go above $1.40, though Mr. Stephenson sub- sequehtly offered to pay $1.50. After laying several airs the flag and band ed the way up the south side of Farnham street, the band stopping ocoasionally to serenade some of the business houses on that thoroughfare. THEY GREET THIER OLD EMPLOYER. At Farnham and Thirteenth they caught sight of Mr. Stephenson com- ing down on the oppositeside, escorted by a aquad of the police, headed by the city marshal and deputy. There was a great shout at this but the contractor and police the officers yesterday on a warrant sworn to by hl. wife, charging him with writing an insulting letter to her. —The statement that the old M. E. passed on down without a word, the procession thereupon reversivg the direction of the warch. On Eleventh and Farnam they met the same party THE OMAHA vailia BE .fIIUl{SDAY. MARCH 2 18 the application to the city authorities to interfere: “‘I cannot interfere with men for peaceably parading the streets,” way the reply; ‘‘the law guarantees them that liberty,” It is roported that Mr. Stephenson intends to #ue the city for not protecting him with the police. TROUBLR. that during the forenoon the men wunhitched all the horses from the wagons and carts and dumped the latter, with plows, ete., into the pond near by, Mr. James Callahan, who was super- intending the grading before it was stopped, was hit on the head and hurt while resisting. After leaving Thirteenth strect the strikers and the large body of men accompanied the procession to the sewer ditch on Fourieenth street be- tween Farnham and Harney where about twenty five men were at work, The strikers harangued and insisted on these to quit shoveling and the crowd gathered on the corner of Fourteenth and Farnham strects. At this juncture MAYOR BOYD APPEARED upon the scene with the police force, Chief Engineer Galligan and two or three specials. The mayor said: ““T command you in the name of the State of Nebraska and as Mayor of the City of Omaha to dispers: The crowd at this raised a dissent- ing yell, when the mayor commanded the officers to arrest the ringleaders, and four men were quickly placed into wagons and taken to jai{ I'he by- standing strikers attempted to inte fere, but the officers clubbed them ol and succeeded in clearing the corner. The mayor evinced the best of nerve, It meems presence quelled what at one time seemed to be an imminent riot. After the dispersing of the crowd the command of Mayor Boyd, eyerything was quiet up tosix o’clock, and Farnam street assumed its ordi- nary appearance, except, perhaps, that more people were gathered on the corners, discussing, profand con, the relative positions of the strikers and the city officials, After supper about two hundred of the strikers as- sembled on Howard stroct near the dump aud from there proceeded to the eorner of Farnam and Ninth streets, where an informally organ- ized meeting was held. At this congregation sbout a hun- dred of the strikers rewained and they were aadressed briefly by the best speakers and by the chairman. One of the speakers gave it as his opinion that the strikers would gain their point by Friday, if they would be firm. He was of the epinion that the men should never have allowed the leaders to have been arvested yes- terday, and said that if they had been men instead of children they would not have permitted it. ~=This latter sontiment was not as en {Rusiastically applauded as the man speaking it could desire, and the atten- tion of the crowd seemed to be alto- gether on other things. After awhile it was determined that the meeting should adjourn until 7 o'clock this morning, when the strik- ers should all gather at the dump and watch matters there during the day It was gonerally agreed shat if men attempted to work at the prices struck against their tools should be taken from them, but no one to be injured. Later, another gathering wes held at the corner of Ninth and Howard .BOTTS BREAKS FAITH, And Tells a Plausible Story of the Shooting of Stroebech, Which, if True, Would Exonerate Him Entirely The network of proof against the alleged murderers of Honry Strocbeck in Keg Creek township, Pottawatto- mie county, Towa, is elowly about them. cure yesterday by the confession of Joseph Botts, the colored man arrest- ed at the house of Mrs. Green near Metz' brewery, in this city, and who from his well known character was suspected strongly of having been the man who fired the fatal shot, Botts immediately after his arrost played innocent to perfection but the Frrml- a8 to his complicity in the af air were too overwhelming and yeas- terday he made a quasi confession to Henry Grebe, the ex-deputy sheriff and the jailor, Mr. Joe Miller, Botts’ story is a plausible one, and is confirmed in several details by known facts Hesays that on Friday afternoon last Murray and Dan Shen- ter came over to Omaha from the Bluffs, and met him near the head- quarters building. Th!\y asked him 10 go across the river with them and act as doorkeeper at a lecture to be given by Murray at a school house in the neighborhoud of the residence of Stroebech. Whether there is any closing It was wade more se- and Harney where they displayed a[and by his pluck and authoritative | such school house or not Botts don’t know, but it is known that Murray, who is an Englishman, has delivered several lectures at different timus. The trio crossed the river on the 2 o'clock dummy, Murray paying the fares of all three They reached th vicinity of the subposed school hous: about $:30 o'clock, but were lost and eould not find it, if it was there. Joe then wanted to rebarn to Cour cil Bluffs, but the others: refused and | proposed hunting for a farm house, ; which they did, bringing uwp at Stroe- beel's. Here they encountered a dog which was beligerent, and Botts was assigned the duty of pacifyine him, while the other two tried to find lodgings at the house. Huaving got the dog quieted and finding that his companions had entered the house, Joe staried to follow them. He got only inside the hallway when he heard the shot. He says he thinks one of the two fired it, of course, but don’t know which one. All they got was the §6, and of this small booty none fell to his share. The piste} was obtamned at a Coun- cil Bluffs- pawn-shop, a friend baving offered it to them for protection on the trip ifi they would pay the amount due on it. He claims that he was no: visit in the slightest degre; While this story may or may not be true it is-a plausible one, and further confessions may be had which may help to unravel the mystery, Walton, who was arrcsted as a wit- the work and who backed out, was taken over to Council Biuffs yester- ay. 1t was rumored on good authority last night that Stroebech's wounds were after all not nkely to prove fatal. let into the secret of the object of the | win M. A Horrible Death Met at s Midnight Hour, A shocking sight was that seen this morning on Thirteenth street below Jackson, where a large and fine look- ing cow hung by the neck and fore feet in a well, dead of cowrse, her tongue protruding from her mouth from strangulation. It appears that there was a louse platform acruss the mouth of the well, which while strong enough, wa- too amall for the aperture it coverml 1t bad been ussd for some yesterday coal over it in ime,. and wagons were draavn safety. After falling feet down until Aer head was below the surface of the sireet several feet the ansmal and the platform be- came wedged and woull go no farther, | this position she was discovered and efforts made to draw her out with a derrick and tuckle were withowt success and she flnally died from strangalation.
