A Countryman Pays a High Price for a Copy of the “ Revised Version,” Chica.o Times. OF all the trades and occupations, that ot book seliing is perhaps the lonst eventful. Chicavo supports but two book establishmonts of any size, and the dulness of he clerks’ lives is almost proverbial. But little has ever been written about this branch of industry, sud the niost notable - stance, —that in the “*Gilded Age,” only proves that even if a ‘“‘good thing” did oceur in a bookstore, it would be one chance in a thousand if anybody would appreciate it. Occa: sionally, however, something will oceur that illuminate the dull existence of the book- man like a streak of treacle on a boy's chin. On an average of twice a month the store will be entered by a raw looking countryman or a wasted resident of the aity. who slides up to the nearest clerk, and, after hesitat- ing » few moments, asks him ina stage whisper whether he has any “French books.” The clerk, if he is a new man, generally answers him in the aftirmative, and conducts him to the French school books, and leaves him to wrestle with the awful mys- teries of Olendorf's method; but pres- ently the customer returns, and tells the clerk that that is not the kind he wanted. He indicates that he kind ho wants ““HAS PICTURES IN THEM." The clerk, by a surgical operation, then understands that the country- man is looking for forbidden literary T Ingniries for books of this be annoying. Last week a clerk in one of the book stores determined to “fix" the next man. He accordingly took a damaged copy of the revised version, and, doing it up very care fully in a piece of manilla paper, ecaled the package with red sealing- wax and dropped it behind a row of books. He had not long to want. In a day or two a ‘“hog man” from Towa, with the odor of a packing house about his clothes, came into the stsre, and after scraping his boots on a black-walnut boo'k-case of the Eastlake pattern, he approached the wily conspirator, went through the usual formula, and wound up with an inquiry for “*Fanny Hill.” "The clerk replied by a vigorous shak of the head, but something encour- aged the granger, and he inquired again, This time the clerk also shook his head, but not quite sv vigorously, and the excited ‘‘hogman,” across whose mind visions of the book and its pictures floated, insinuated, pro- tested, and begged tho clerk to give it to him, That individual at last by degrees admitted that he had a copy, but that it not for sale The excited purchunr’l‘:ullml out his roll and offered 820. The clerk said the price was only $5, but that he wnu'd not sell the book, as he thought that the purchaser would at once in- form the government and thus get the firm into trouble. At last the clerk, with a mysterious air, led him into the basement and produced the book. But before taking the man's money he made him swear on o Webster's unabridged that he would not open the package nntil out of town. This he fathfully promised to do, and, passing over the §0, he bolted out ef tho place with his prize CLUTCHED TIGH IN HIS HAND, Knowing that he would open it on the first opportunity, an office boy was sent to follow him. He did so and soon returned, The lad said that the customer entered the nearest station and sat in tho window for some time, now and then taking furtive glances at the corner of the pxwka%u, which poeped tantalizingly out of his ulster puulml, whistling to himself all the time hike a strange lad i a dark lane, His imagination worked upon his cu- riosity at last, and ho seated himself behind the stove in the rear of the room. After looking cautious) about for some time he carefully too out the package and eyed with great cagerness the sealing wax which kept from him the object of his curiomty. At last, however, he began peeling off the paper covering, stopping now and again to sce if he was watched, After a long while he succeeded in tearing off the entire wrapper, With beating heurt and glistening eyo ho opened the volume sud HNooked i The boy says that tho expression which cams over the faco of the countryman was a study for a panter. He sat for some min- utes looking at the volume, sighed a #igh or two, then opened the stove door and consigned the gospels to the samo fate as was usually meted out in the past to Boceaccio.
