Grent Excitement Among the Ani- mals On the Arrival of the Young Stranger-—Mother and Child Doing Well New Haven (Conn.) Cor. Queen, the mother of the baby ele- | phant, hiad to be chained, but snapped a great beam in giving the tendants u needloss seare, for other | chains hedd, The little stranger was | ushered into the world with loud trumpetings, which were takon up by nineteen other clephants, and were answered by growls and cries from lions, tigers and other animals, and the uoise was territic. About an hour after the baby was born it was able to take a few stop The little one's feet were of a pink timt at birth, but in an hour they had become dark in color. Two or three hours after give ing birth to the by, Queen be eame subdued enough to lie dewn awhile, and in the interval ali those present had an opportunity to get a fair look at the curosity. Queen would toss hay over it, try to roll it about, and manifested a fecling of joy over its coming and motherly love tor it generally. Oftentimes the specta tors would ery out in subdued tones of alarm for foar the huge beast would trample on or crush her precious charge; but, clumsy as she appeared to be, she was as careful as a mother could be of her new-born babe, and low, endearing trumpetings told of the pleasure she felt. Baruum had the baby insured for £30,000, by vri- vate parties, for one year. He named it America. It weighed 145 pounds at birth, not 45, as telegraphed. Co- lumbia, the other baby elephant, weighed at birth, 213 pounds, and gained one pound per day for one y Professor Arstingstall, who had char of Queen, said: ‘“The baby, which stands two and a half feet high, will not be weaned in two vears. Tt nurses, and we shall not give it any artificial food for a long time, *As you see, it is perfectly formed, and when you look at it you would think you were looking at a full crown clephant through the smaller end of a spy-glass. We have cly been feeding the mother on cracked oats, oat-meal crackerssonked in Jamaica rum. We shall continue this diet for some time. The baby is it now, and will undoubtedly live and thriv 1f necessary, I could move it to another city in a week By that time, if you come here, you will see it running about this ring, playfu as a Kitten . Barnum when asked to approach and touch the baby, declined. -1 don’t care,” he said. ‘I was once asked to go up in a balloon, and 1 sard T would eladly of Thad twolives.” He was finally persuaded to fondle the little stranger, and whilo the mother permitted it, it was plain to be scen she did not like it. Just after the birth the baby lay on the satraw, a dark-looking object, the size of a Newfoundland dog. Over this Queen rocked and tramped all the time, ut- tering fearful crics. She would tug a with a wmighty effort at the attachen to her hind legs, and and plunge like ayoung colt. Not even Prof, stingstall dare ventare near her while she was labor- ing under this tremendous excite- ment. Exhausted by her efforts the beast would fall on her side to the straw, Soon recovering she would rise and give vent to a series of howls and begin the same tramping of the ground, tugging at the ropes, and en- deavoring to free her fore legs from the chaw which held her to a huge pest to the cente. of thering, All this time the trainer circled about the animal, endeavoring by endenring words to calm her excitement. times she would try o pick her baby up, but failing in this she would snap at the trainer and give vent to fierce howls. To-night the mother is ap- proachable. Barnum intends to take the mother and baby to New York soon for exhibition, hicago Times, wo, e Physical Suftering. Washington 8pecigl 1o Chicago T A recent paragraph cable from Lon- don stated that Colonel Preston, of the British army, was dead, and that in his will he had left the sum of £5,000 to a Colonel Riley, formerly American Consul at Zanzibar. Tt was stated at the time this sum was a testimonial of gratitude of Colonel Preston to Colonel Riley for saving his child from drowning. It appears that the Riley mentioned in this par- agraph is a clerk in the Agricultural Departinent. The Republican prints the following account of an interview with Riley, who is known as Judge, instead of Colonel. The Republican says: “A reporter yesterday suc ed in finding Judge Riley, of Vir- ginia, at the Arigricultural Depart- ment, where he 18 now clerk, and sne- coeded in identifying him as the por- son meant by the paragraph. The news came from London, and called the_beneficiary a Colonel,’ but this is readily explained when it is under- stood that iintihh officers more gener- ally understood that a Consul has the rights and relative rank of a naval captain, and, therefore, of a Colo of the Army. Judge William ( Riley is & resident and native of Ac- comae County, on the eastern shore Virginia, and was appointed by I Grant, in 1875, Consul of t} United Stutes to the island and port of Zanzahar. Ho left New York in waary, 1876, for his port, going to England, thence across Kurope and the Mediterranean. to Egypt, and to Suez by rail, where he hoarded one of the Peninsula and Oriental Steam ship company’s steamers. When the rescuer and tho rescued, with the baby prize wore safuly again on deck an enthusisstic meeting of the officers and passengers on board was held, and a generous purso was made up to Judge Riley This the Judge at onee declined, tho ground that a motive merest common lnmanty which would move a gentloman to make an attempt to save a human wouldbe degraded by anything that looked like a payment; that gladness of heart at bringing the child back safo was richer reward than any payment. ¢l and Mrs. Proston were, As may well be imagined profuse in’ their profes- sions of gratitude. Judge Riloy's destination was reached, and he and his newly made friends parted, oftly to continue a very limited correspon dence for several years.
