Thee reading room, enly moderately Committee To those Who Have, or Have Been, Boys, To th Business Men of Omaha We, the subscribed committes, would respecttully call the attention of the business and citizens of Omaha to the following brief state- ment of the objects of the Young Men’s Christian association: Considering oven worally the aims of this association, which is un- suctarian in its principles, they seem to us worthy the sympathy and sup- port of every one who at all rugnrb» e moral standing of our city. One aim i to provide rooms, made attractive by pictures, periodicals and books, where the stranger can always find a rosting place and the tempted a refuge. The design fs to haye one door, begide the saloon, tie gambling hall, and the brothel, always open for the welcoming of youngmen. The hundreds of those in early manhood, coming into our wmidst, are to be mct as 8oon after their entrance into our city as possible; the early impressions of Christian homes are to be deeponed upon their mind; and their lives, if possible, sct in the way of permanent honesty and uscfulness. The importance of such an off-set to the varied temptations of a rapidly growing and prosperous city scems to us self-evident. Many fall into vives of every description for the simple reason that they have no congenial plece in which to spend their ovenings. The homes of comafort and elegance are to a great degroe closed against them through want of acquaintance oy other nses. Tho lonehmess of the board- ing house drives them into the streots. Our churches, tase upon Sabbath and a few evenings im the week are dark, and the temptation is strong to drop into places where music and mirth in- s to ruin and despair. If the buni nees men of Omaha weuld assist us to plase tho association upon a firm hasis and enable up tof open and make atoactive rooms that shall be centrally looated, the excuse —which isa real ono in many a owso will be gouw, that the young man has no moral a nd comfortablo place in which to speud his. evenings. Those who by honesty and good habits hase 1isen to influence and wealth, shauld consider that all the future of a mori often depends upon men heerfully t and home-like Wild Place' in % the Choighten, the city yesterdny. The banc The defendant was ar- rested last week on charge of violat. ing the license law. When Siert was arraigned he pleaded not guilty, and asked for a continuance of his case until February 6th, on the ground that P. M, Deerson, the president of the assoclation, is a materlal witness, and as he is absent in Europe it would be necessary to await his re turn, Siert gave bonds in $600 for his appearance. Bernard Lang and Julius Schroder signed the bonds. The following is stated to be the law according to Wharton, relating to the sale of liquor under the guise of an association, or giving it away for a consideration: “‘No trick by which a sale iscovered up a8 a trade, or as a free drink when money 18 paid for admission, or as a prior contribution will be a defense, f the liquor is directly or indirectly given away for a valuable considera- tion it is a sale, but a bona fide gift is not a sale.
