Jan2-12 BEE.|A DETECTIVE'S OPINION. He Declares that Col. Watson B. £mith was Brutally Murde ed. And that Arndt Iunocent of the Crime, The Latter Allowed to go to the Depot Alone. He 1s Not Only Willing But Anxious for His Trial Tuesday morning, viously announced, August Arndt, the a8 was pro- much-persecuted farmor, and the most impotent victim of prejudico on tho part of the U. P, railroad, was taken to dictment for having threatened the life of Judge Dundy. The train upon which the unfortunate man was taken to the plece of trial, left over the B, & M. at 8:40 o'cle It had had given the matter any attention that, in barbarous(’ instinets of the man, and the ency mity (/) of his past life, and the dia- bolical a certain erime which it is sought to lay at his door, as tried to bo proved by the mercen- ary scribblers of the U, . road; that the prisoner, Ardut, would be con veyed to the depot, with the closest Lincoln to be tried on in , in the morning been expected by those who view of the /) nature of watch and the strongest guard which it is pessible for the government to exercise and give under those circum stances. Tie Bee, however, is in- formed that nothing of the kind was done, and that, in fact, Arndt, withou* manacles, without any person to conduct him, walked to the depot to take the train to the place where he is to account for the charges alieged against him. It is tru, however, that another prisoner was taken to the same train, to be conveyed to Lincoln also, aud this prisoner was in tho custody of Mr, J. J. Neligh, su perintenacnt of tho Western Deteetive Agency, and with whom, he walked nearly a block be hind Arndt. As there was some thing wysterious in all this, Tine Bre reporter determined to investig So, Tuesday aftornoon he ferotted out Mr. Neligh and asked for an ex- planation. Reporter. T understand you took Arndt to the train yesterday. Mr. Neligh, Yes, Rep. How came you to do so! Mr. N. Twas requestod last night by Doputy Marshal Stevenson, ow- ing to the sickness of Mr. Bierbower, as also to the absence of the deputies, to take him to the train, and to dele- gate somobody to take charge of him and another prisoner, while on the road to Lincoln. Rep. Why did_you allow him to walk alone, and unguarded to the depot! 3 g{ Mr. Sanders, who was appoint- ed to watch them to Lincoln, and myself, were rather late in getting to the jail. -There was barely time then to make the train, and Sanders having loft his baggago on Farnam gtroet, started to get it, leaving me to escort the prisoners, Garey and Arndt, down Harnoy and Tenth streets to the de- pot. T walked beside Garey, who was carrying some heavy baggage, while Arndt walked some distance ahead? Rep. Wore you not afraid of his escaping ? N. Nk:), I would have trusted him to go alone. Rep. Doesn’t that show too much carlessness for and confidence in o man suspected of the murder of Col. Smith! N. Wy, wy dear friend that poor old “cravk,” although possibly guilty of threatening the life of Judge Dundy and that of other U, S officers, and although cranky on many other matters, had no more to do with the murder of Col, Smith than you or me Rep. Then you attach no import- ance to the case made out against him by the Republican! No, I do not. He has made contradictory statements, it is true, both before and after his arrest as to his whereabouts on the night of the murder of Smith, But it 1s casy to aceount for his contradictions, Thoy do nol, however, wculpute him in my mind, nor do they in the minds of District Attorncy Lambertson and Mr. Cowin, with both of whom I have beon aseociated in the matter. In fact, any statement he might make, oven though he were to confess the murder, would not alter the facts as to his whereabouts that night. And, inasmuch as, a short time after the murder, T kuew of his wher of the he Saud 11 o'e look into with the Swmith, Rep. Do you believe Colone! Smith was murderad? N. Ido. There is abundance of proof to show that it was u brutal and diabolical murder, Rep. Is there auything being done to securo the guilly parties! N. There has been cousiderable money exponded by the committee, taken from the fund raised by the citizens, but the amount subscribed, 1 abouts on the do between the b cli, Tdid not seo fiv to the atter v connection assass: Colonel urs of ation of undorstand, will not reach quite $0,000, of which 8,000 are held intact for the reward offored, leaving not enough to follow up clues in the systematic wauner in which it should be done. The probabilities are that the murder will always remain a mystery unless its perpetrator is discovered by ucei- dent, or the committee is provided with a largely mereased working fund. No detective of ability will work for reward without having the expenses incidental to his labor provided for, I believe that large rewards in cases of this kind are really dangerous. It is well known that many people have been already suspected and accused of this murder withoutany well-grounded cause whatever. Rep. Have you any opinion as re gards the party who committed the crime! N. What the Oregon Short Line Wi complish for the Territory and this City United States Marshal E, S. The mar- shal is looking hearty and robust, and announced that he was on a tew days trip to sco his friends in Omaha. “Of course,” said he, upon being asked Low business was in Idaho and especially in the Wood river country, “‘everything at present is dull in that When winter approaches nearly all work in the mines shuts down and consequently there is but little life in the camps. But that country is opening up wonderfully and it gives the greatest promises for the future. During the past year, 1881, over ecighteen hundred locations have heen staked, which make the total number of locations about 4,300. Many of those locations have been sold almost as soon as made, Last week three mines were sold by the prospectors for the aggregate sum of $680,000, that being the price obtained by the prospectors and not including what the ‘middle men’ must have made. “This seems a great deal of money to pay for mines that have simply been opened, but in each case the purchases were made by parties in the business who know what they are about, and don’t make foolish bar- gains. One thing can be said also for the Woold River mines which caunot be gpoken for any other mining coun- try'in the world, and that s that no mine has been worked to the expense of a thousand dollars that has not paid. There are already over one hundred and fifty paymg mines, and prospectors have almost a certainty of success when they commence a hole. ““Y he reason 18 that the distriet el braced within what is known properly a8 the Wood River country is as full of mincral as it is possible to bo The class of ore is galena and copper bnsis, next to the v formation. The judge then suggested the propriety of the prisoner procuring coun- sel, when he replied that he had not the means. Thereupon His Honor asked him to designate some member of the bar that he preferred as countel. He then stated that he consdered it an insult to ask any member of the bar to defend him; but if the court was to give him counsel he would prefer Mr. Charles Redick. He was soon picked up and was carried into the shop yards, where he luy for a fow minutes unconscious, and the report spread that he had been killed. A physician arrived quickly, and restoratives were applied.
