MoGee Convicted of Murder in the Second Degree, A Sonsational Sermon Which At- tracts Much Attention. At the opening of the new year of 1882, we are pleased to announce that thete is a new and very important en- terprise about to be started here in shapo of a barge line between this| eity and St Louis We understand that a company of St Louis capitalists contemplate ranninga lme of barges from that place to Council Bluffs, Towa, and that after making measurements and surveys, they have ascortained that Spring lake a short distance north of atfords moat excellent facilities for w harbor for the barges. by measurenent that the lower end of the lake is some B8} feet above the water mark of the river, while the upper end is abont on a level with the river, thus offording fa- cilities, to supply the lake with ad ditional water at small means of pipes, put in at the upper| sad, and a canal at the lower end by means of which barges could be run in and out of the luke into the river. | All that this company asks of the city is that t.hry give them the exclusive use of the lower end of the lake with privilege to grade up one of the streets to the .uke and construct a stone wall across the lake, to be used for the purpose of supplying the canal with water to float the barge. 1f this be true the city should grant this right | C to the company at once as such an en terprise would add materially to the prosperity of cur citizens and the em bankments proposed by saidlaw would protect our city from future encronch- ment of water caused by the overflow of the Missouri river. AN IMRERESTING SERMON. this city They have ascertained exponse by ‘The Baptist church was crowded on last Sunday evening. In fact quite a large number were turned away for want of standing room. It was manifest that more people were drawn there more to hear what M. Lemen bad to say about ill-fame and gambling houres than to worship. All classes and conditions of humanity wore there; good men who hava not listened to the prerching of the gos- pel mince they came west were thore; gamblers and saloon-keepers, and ®ven prostitutes eat as eager listeners, ‘The utmost decorum was maintained throughout. This might have been owing to the fact that Mayor Vaughn, | all present verence, wan kind and generous, uu.xi charitable to all; and many years will | voll around before the impress of her mdividuality will pass away; she was | one of the few that when called to an swer to the summons ‘“‘child of (Iv earth come awey,” willnot bo forgot ten. | The services will be at the Prosby | terian church at 10:30 o'clock, after which a special train of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy will take the re mains to Glenwood forburial. Friends | are invited to attend the funeral. COURTEOUS HOSPITALITY, The manner in which W. F. Sapp, | Jr., received and presented xm- guests | at the grand celebration by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. | Colonel William K. Ex-Mayor James, Recorder Burke, Chief fof Police H. H. Field snd Officer Brooks were present. Mr. Lemen started out by reading a fow words from Isaiah .n! then went e to show that the time weuld come, unless the people arose in their might, when God would put all crime under hisfeet. That he himself was obliged to move from the house he oocupied in the upper part of the city to avoid passing the dens of infamy and shame along the route. He ac- oused the prees of trying to cover up crime, because it is for their interest to do so. He said he had investi- gated the mattor and was ready to prove that Council Blutfs contained eight or ten gawbling dens, fifteen notorious houses of infamy and about thirty on theoutskirts and one hundred saloons indorsed by six hundred citi- zens who hive adjoining He thought the blame for all the crime and misery did not restat the door of the police dopartment. He claimed a great deal rests with the citizens of Council Bluffs that the the sentiment of the business men are in favor ot such things on account of the profita they derived from such quarters. That the reason the ofticers ot the law allowed such things to go on was because it had becomesa cus- tom those before them had winked at. He said those in authority had i formed him that it was impossible to secure a conviction in ninety-nine oascs out of hundred. In a saloon on Broadway seventy-five young men of this city Lad been counted ganbling at one time. Vile women st in the parlors of these dens dressed in a mwanner as to arouso their passions.
