| COUNCIL BLUFES, oot omee o ared emorah nad - | two a supertluity Handsome Tribute of Respect by |, Many of the watkinamen arte con the Bar to Sheriff Reel, Cloee of the Catholic Fair, and who Drew the Prizes, The Haul a Sneak Thief Made on a Hotel-Keeper's Vest. Distriot Court Opens To-Day—Mis- cellaneous News Beforo the adjournmont of the dis- trict court on Saturday night John N. Baldwin in a very neat but effective speech called Judge Reed's attention to the fact that the bar had some bus- iness they desired to transact beforo the court which would require the presence of Sheriff Reel. Mr. Recl soon entered the room. Mr. Baldwin then arose and very feclingly related the objeet of the bar meeting, court and in behalf of the members present ed Mr. Reel with a gold-headed cane, alto a beautiful meerschaum pipo in behalf of the bailiffs of the court. During the pre sentation Mr. Reel's eyes filled with tears and his lips at the close could pression to I thank your very handsome Reed indorsed the action of tho bar in a few appropriate words, saying he was pleased to see such a wnifestation of appreciation by the members of the Pottawa*tamie county bar of so worthy an ofticer as M Reel has proven himself to be since he became sheriff. THE CATHOLIC FAIR closed a very prosperous season at Dohaney’s opera house on Friday evening. Conductor Heaton got the punch as the most popular conduc amongst the Catholics. Mayor Vaughan, as the most popular citizen, in the opinion of this church, was voted a beautiful sad- dle. Mr. W. D. Thomas stands at the head of butchers in the opinion of this church, and was the recipient of a handsomo outfit, Miss Annie Quinn is the most popular young lady by a large majority. C. 8. Clark of the Nonpareil got” the editor's ocasy chair, as being the most popular e porter in the Catholic church. We wot 13 votes, and came within 268 of winning the chair. W are sorry that Clark didn’t get the 13, but for sons of Erin who stood so nobly by us, although we were not present, we return our sincere thanks. Me Grew will turn and join different church. He says he will have nothing to do with one in which Clark is the most popular member. A SNEAK THIEF'S HAUL, A sneak thief entered the privato sleeping apartment of Mr. and Mrs Max Mohn. at the hotel kept by them on Main street, and stole Mr. Moore's vest containing a silver watch with gold chain attached, and about seven- ty-five dollars in money. As hus been her custom Mrs. Mohn arose in the morning leaving her husband asleep in the room, She went below to pre- pave there his oreakfast. On retiring Mr. Mohn had left his clothes on a chair near his bed. During the ab- sence of his wife the vest was taken but was not missed until quite late in the forenoon, when he proceeded to dress himself, Mr. Mohn found the vest lying in the parlor adjoining with the pockets turned out. As yet thero is no clue. Mr Mohn states that he had about seventy-five lodgers in the house that night, a very large number of whom were strangers. THE MILLER OBSEQUIES, The remains of George L. Miller, who was accidentally shot on a cattle range out in Wyoming territory, ar- rived in this city on Friday evening. Thoy wore mot by & committes from tho Mascnic fraternity of this city, of which he was an honored member, and escorted to his late residence on Eighth street, where were conducted yesterday afternoon under the auspices ot which deceased bolonged. BALSBURY'S TROUBADOU It gave a very pleasant entertainment to a crowded house on Saturday evening The singing was excellent. Jach member of the troupe is a star in the profession. Mr. Salsbury's imper- sonations were immense, A STRAW, W. R. Vaughan was eclected mayor of this city by a large majority under the new charter of the Catholic fair, last Friday night. WG TIME ALL AROUND, A very highly respectyble farmer who came to Council Blufls a fow days ago, concluded to remain over night and take in the sights. He repaired to Big Lou’s, where he putin a big night and was relieved of about £50 in cash, THE DISTRICT COURY will convene in this city to-day. Judge Reed gave the jury another holiday, but coneluded he could not give himself one, The Episcopal society will be enter- tained by Mrs, Col. Sapp at the Og- den hotel, this evening (Monday). A cordial invitation is extented to all. The Dirtiest City iu the World. Noples Letter, Naples is the largest city in Italy- - nearly twice as large as any other- within 50,000 miles of Chicago; and this dense multitude live and move and have their being in huddling hives, from which they swarm like bees. This is belioved to be their only resemblance to bees. They are a8 lazy as they are dirty. A Neapoli- tan’s idea of heaven is to sit ona driver’s seat and crack the whip over the head of a gothic horse. He sel- dom strikes the horse, but cracking the whip is a special accomplishment of Naples, as mosaics are of Florence In only two things have I ever see Neapolitan display any vigor - crack- ing the whip and scratching his back. Dirty! the Neapolitan is the dirtie living creature. Nine-tenths of the reoplu on the street look as if they had worn their clothes for years, and expected to wear them without wash- ing till they drop off. They are gen erally of some hempen stuff, or tow funeral services | the order to| their shoj with nothing on stant.y seen voing about d even the trects it a pair of trousers, and T saw one stop in & crowded street and [deliberately take of his trousers to search’ for a flea. Lordon Truth | With regard to the “‘relic rooms,” | to which allusion was made last weck, i T understand that not only at Balmo- | ral, but also at Osborne, and at Wind- | sor Castle, the suits which were occn pied by the Prince Consort have neyer | been altercd in any way hi | death, Everything remuins as he loft it.
