The Grand Jury Fail to Indict Sullivan for the Murder ot John 8, Sapp. o - down on Pearl street yesterday and waa pretty badly demolished. 8. D, Hopkins tell on Uuion ave- nue yesterday and received quite an injury. —_— SILVER SOUVENIRS. Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of the Naptials of Col. W. F. Sapp and Wife The silver wedding of Hon, W. F. Sapp and Mrs. Mary Brown Sapp oc- curred at their elegant residence in Fatal Shooting Accident Near|Council Bluffs yesterday afternoon Hamburg, Iowa. “The Only Excitement of the Day is a Dog Fight. News was received in this city, through a telegram sent to John T. Stewart, that George L. Miller, for- merly a well known citizen of Coun- cil Bluffs, had been accide ntally shot and killed on a ranche where he worked for Mr. Stewart. It has boen impossiblo to obtain the partic- ulars as to how the accident hap- pened. The ranche is situated near the town of Rawlins, in Wyoming Territory. Mr. Miller was an old Texas ranger, and at one time carried on the butch- ers’ business quite extensively. The news of his sudden and unexpected death was sad indeed. His wife is nearly wild with grief. The body of the deceased was immediately for- warded to this city, where it arrived yesterday afternoon. The funeral will probably take place to-day. A GENEROUS LAD, At the Briggs house, on south Main street, a little boy :.him‘slen lyeldrl-;); age is stoppin, ying the landlos l% a weaE g;r g:-rd and lodging, which money he earns by selling pa- pers and blacking shoos. Yesterday merning the little tellow went into a restaurant near the place where he boards, in company with a boy a few years younger than himself. Ad- dressing the proprietor, he said: “See here, mister, this little follow has had no break! There is five cents; that pays fora loaf of bread and perhaps you will give him a chunk of cheese or something. I don’t want to see anybody hungry if I can help it.” The name of the young benefactor is Frank Townsend. The case against Sullivan, held for the murder of the old man, John 8, Sapp, was dismissed by the grand jury, there not being sufficieni testi- mony developed on the part of the state. It will be remembered that Sullivan was the man that one Forney recognized at Clarinda, Page county, and is supposed by him to be the man who had a cut on his face when he inquired of him (Forney) on the morning of the murder the way to the Wabash depot. ¥ TRIED TO FOOL HIM. Ofticer Tyson experienced some little difficulty in taking & female to the in- sane asylum. man and she carri s almost get him in instead of remrining Therself. IT COST HIM DEARLY, The case of J, 8. Lindsey vs. M. J. ©O'Connor, being an action for damages for an assault upon the plain. tif was given to the jury Wednesday ~night. After being out, all night deliberating they te- turned into court with a verdict givinj Lindsey 8260. This case grew out of an unsettled account which the de- fendant, O'Connor, presented to Lind- sey, and upon refusal of payment he proceeded to chastise him, inflicting quite an injury upon Lindsey's nose. COMPLICATED CASE. Judge Reed was onglged yesterda; upon the case of W, B. Mayes, ad- ministrator of the estate of young Baker, an emgloye, prior to his de- cense, of the C. R. L. & P, railroad, inst said company, After the plaintifl’s council rested, de- fendants moved the court that a non-suit be entered and that the com- any have judgment for costs. Judge Reod sustained the motion on the unds that young Baker had been in the employ of the company in the vicinity of the point of the accident and would be presumed in law to know the dangerous conditicn of the defendant's walk. Knowing this and remaining in the employ of them after such knowledge, without any promise from the company to put the track in a more safe condition he dld #0 at his own peril and under the tes- timony introduced in this case he cannot recover. SHOT BY ACCIDENT, As the saying is it never rains but it pours, and now each day’s news brings its list of accidents produced by the careless handling of fire arms, About twelve miles east of Hamburg, at the farm of one J, Van Meter, M. M. Lewis, a blacksmith, was acei- dentally shot by John Van Meter, who fired at an ox, but missed his aim and the bullet took effect in the body of Lewis, passing through the same, FIGHTING OUT AN OLD GRUDGE, he was just sane|bilious headachos, enough to practice a joke on the old | Plaints peouliar tomy sex. it so far as to | yolj ved, and evening, and was the greatest social event of that city for the sea- son. The house was elegantly and profusely decorated, and was abund- antly filled with friends of Mr. and Mrs. Sapp during the reception hours. The reception lasted until late in the evening.
