= oo COUNCIL: BLUFFS. What is - Oalled & Slander on tho Ministers of the City. Christmas Festivities at the Baptist Church Mon day Evening. Pittman Again Indicted on the Charge of Manslaughter. Police Plokings--Misoellaneons Matters for the Million and Pleasant Personal Mention. “Daring the Odd Fellows' fair and fostival last week, for the benefit of the poor of our city, the noble, Chris- tian efforts of that generous order were encouraged by the presence and hopeful words of Rev. F. T. Webb, of St. Paul's Episcopal church, and Rev. Father McMenomy, of the Catholic church, the latter reverend gentleman giving 85 to the cause. We are in- formed that, with the exception of the two gentlemen mentioned, none of the city's clergymen visited the fair dur- ing its progress, or lent it encourage- ment in any form. Those interested naturally wonder at this notable ab- sence of the servants of God, who are supposed to be living up to that divine admonition that ‘the greatest of all theso is charity,’ and to be deeply interested in the cause of charity and the alleviation of the suffering of pinched, poverty-stricken people. Prayers availeth much, but a tew dollars invested in the right lace and at the right time by the nd of Christian liberality, have been proven in the past to avail much more, when placed at the disposal of those nuhl’o committess for the relief of suffering humanity. —Non- pareil. On Sunday morning, to the sur- prise of most of the atizens of Coun- cil Bluffs, the above appeared in our morning contemporary. There isan insinuation coupled with the charge brought indirectly against Cyrus Humlin, Thomas H. Cleland, Mr. Lomen and the other pastors of this city, that these gentlemen are walking the streets and ocoupying their pulpits in the semblance and garb of Christian charity, and yet when there is a call from a secret or- ganization for help in behalf of these needy ones there comes not even a word of encouragement. Such is the charge made by a paper that has for years claimed to hold a position in the van, directing the steps of our young commonwealth, strug- gling to break through a dismal fron- tier life into the sunlicht of an en: lightened civilization. Why the in- sinuation that, because, forsooth, somo of our pastors did not take an active t in the Odd Fellows fair they are indifferent so far as the welfare of the poor of our city are concerned. The Odd Fellows order is one of {,Il\o g?;«:;nm:::dhtionl T;h:t :‘!)\3 ight. of [ upon. 8 to suffering hi performed b them is immeasurable. Once eacl year thay hold a fair devoted exolu- sive Zto charity. Their idea in its inception was dedicated to pure Chris- tian charity towards each other. They are bound with an oath net see a member in good standing suffer. We give them all praise. But shall it be said by one of the leading dailies in the west that because some pastors remainod away during the recent fair held here they are not doing their duty as required in the position they oceupy in this community? This is a base insinuation, and mo one would make it who had seen the efforts put forth by these pastors, not only to alleviate the hunger and want in our city, but to strike at the cause of uine-tenths of this wretcled- ness, and remove it from our midst. For this they work not once a year, but dA*nnd night, year in and year out, They enter the doorof poverty; they make no sign; that one of Uud"’s children is in want is enough. They give and relieve. The world knows nothing of this act of Ohristian char- ity. The writer of this article has re- ceived money from the hand of one of these pastors, with the request that it be taken to the door of some family in need; and has on several occasions, at his requost, gone out in search of such as were in want, to report to him that he might relieve them, What the pastors of our churches and the Christian peoplp in our city do for the poor, the world never knows. For not taking an active part in the Odd Fellows' fair, they might have isfactory reasons, and because they did not is no reason why our morning contemporary should brand thom us hypocrites. CHRISTMAS JOYS, One of the most unique, interest- ing and appropriate Christmas enter- tainments, was given at the Baptist church, in this city, on Monday even- ing. It was evident to an observer entering the spacious that no r&nl been spared to pl the church was very, v d.eoontod.ud Back of th:rynllg". -l been evected a large booth, and dressed as it were in winter cos- tume. In a quiet niche, on the front face, was & minatare churoh illumina- The windows were shaded to ropresent all the oolors of the rain | lad, bow. Tu and around upon all sides of this beautiful structure bags of dainties and swestmeats were hung in profusion. The entertainmentupened with a song and chorus consisting of ten fewale and two male veices. Au effect ve prayer was then offered by the pastor, Rev. J. G. Lelmen. The curtain, shutting from view the booth, was then drawn aside and the object behind I:Yon which the mind and heart of all present had centered was disclosed. The hufhiug clatter of thappy children mingled with the notes of & music box playing a Christmas air. When this scene was enacted, it made the oider ones present wish they were back again amid those childish, happy days, when to them Bauta us was a reality. Then followed singing by a olass of ten little girls, and then resitations, the following little ones taking part in turn: Saddie Osborn, Vie- tor Boon and Grace Brown, Next was announced a duet and chorus by J. W. Berger, Mrs, H. E. Seaman, Miss Berger and Charles Louek, Miss Lillian Berger presiding at the organ. Next inorder we noted the recitations by the following little ones: Eva Sears, Tda Roper, May Sealy and Leo Brewer, A{ur this came the most interest- ing part of the programme. Mrs. H. E. Seaman stepped to the organ and began to sing a Christmas song enti- tled *‘Somebody's Coming,’ introduc- tory to the arrival of (to the children) the most important porsonage at that moment upon earth. At the end of the first verso, away in the distance, could be heard the faint jingle of the merry Christmas bell around the necks of the reindeers attached to Santa Ol sleigh, and as each was concluded the ringing became louder and londer and when tho song was ended, Old Santa himself made his appearance, to the astonishment and delight of all. He came up the side aisle puffing and blowing, down the contre and mount- ed tho platform, where ho introduced himself to the little folks. He was warmly greeted and more warmly clad ina very thick buffalo overcoat. He wore long, white hair and whiskers, After distributing presents to all he retired through the door by which he entored. A song by the Sabbath schoon and a tableaux upon which was reflected light from the back repre- senting the “‘Star of Bethlehan,’ fol lowed, when Mr, Berger* announced that supper had been {;repnrod for the children in the chapel. To this room each class retired, a reporter of Tue Bee joining the Bible class, to bo present during the last scene of a most magnificent Christmas entertain- ment. RATHER SUGGESTIVE. There 1s a board stuck in the mud south of Broadway, on Tenth street, on one side of which the following is inscribed: ““Dangerous Passing,” and on thoe other side the following: Sa- cred to the memory of our city finances. Died of depletion while on a wedding tournament; spilled out at horse racing. Their lives depreciated just on the ragged edge of this mud- hole.” Under all is written: *The wicked rule; the people mourn,— Proverbs, xxix, 2." HANDSOMP ENTERTAINMENT, Mras. Marie Mynster, as is her usual custom, entertained a few friends at her palatial residence at Mynster park. Everything her place and the market could’uflurd to please the appetite was furnished. PITTMAN INDICTED, Christian Pittman has again been reindicted. It will be remem- bered that this case was tried here about one year ago, occupying nearly eight days, After being out twenty- four hours the jury were unable to agroe, part of them voting on the first ballot E:.r an acquittal. The majority were in favor of returning a verdict of manslaughter. On change of venue the case was taken to Mills county, and would have came on for trial at the last term of the district court held there, had it not been discovered that the indictment was missing. The court dismissed the case against him. He was agamn brought before the court upon the new indictment, and upon motion of his ocounsel was ad- mitted to bail in the sum of $5,000. THE DIBTRICT COURT convened again yesterday, and got right down to businoss. The first caso taken up and which occupied the court ul!.enrly was No, 3277, John P. Morris va. C. C. Cook & Co. Cementd Sims for plaintiff, John H. Keatty for defendant. A GOOD BANTA CLAUS, Mr. Prior took the very important art of Sants Claus at the children's hristmas entertainment on Monday evening at the Baptist church, and a right good one he made, too. THE CATHOLIC FAIR has every promise of success. The hall was well filled last night. ‘‘Wait- ing for the Verdict” was brought out in fine style by a dramatic company from Omaha, POLICE NEWS, Charley Jacobs was arrested by Ofticer Cusic for discharging firearms within the city limits.
