Fhis was in August, and immed Iy Mr. Sisty went to work to arr, i about the building, and the water sup ply. The grounds are 8} miles from Denver, down the Platte, flmnuh dis- tant from it to the cast about three quarters of a mile. The surface is ir- regular, that is composed of both high and low ground, from the former of which bubble up in the lower places, innumerable springs of clear, cold water. A slough, formed by springs, furnishes an excellent outlet for all waste water, as well as providing am- ple ice in the winter, which can be stored for summer use. The building is an unpretentious little frame, painted that dark metalie red se much used by railronds on their section houses, ete., a doorway in the front end, with a window on either side; to the left blufls rising steeply up to the mesa above, and to the right, fringed by a dense growth of bushes, the slough before referred to necured in icy fotters. The operating room is 22x3b, in which eight double troughs slope from the northern wall, leaving but a pas. suge way at their bottom ends. The troughs are ench 16 feet long, 11 inches wide and 6 inches deep, and ave arranged in pairs, waking in all vight double, or sixteen single ones, Their bottoms are covered with ce- ment, on which, after hardening, is laid on a thin layer of clean gravel, being washed downward. The pure, clear spring water is brought in a pipe from the stone basm, a few paces ofl from the building, and is then tarned into the troughs, eseaping through an outlet below and being discharged into the slough. A constant and never varying thin sheet of water is thus kept gently gliding over the rifiles and across the gravel in every trough. To commence oporations with Mr. Sisty has bought 400,000 eggs of east- ern brook trout, securing them from W. L. Gilbert, of the Old Colony trout ponds, at Plymouth, Massachu- setts, at $1.76 per 1,000. Two hun- dred’ thousand of these eggs aro ex- pected next Wednesday, and then the real work of the hatchery begins, Tt may bo micresting to the general reader to peruse the following run- ning account of the business of fish culture, as detailed to The Tribune reporter yosterday, by Mr. E. V, Bogart, the gentlemanly and courteous superintendent: When the eggs are received om ‘Wednesday, they will be put into the troughs, resting on the gravel bes They aroe already vivified before llup- ping. The eggs will be a trifle larger than the head of a pin, and every day they must be looked over carefully, and all the dead and discased ones be removed. The condition of the egg is_told by its color. If healthy, it will be white with twolittle black dots, known as “‘oye spots’” upon it; if dead, it will be of a pale, milky white, and without the spots, The change of tempe which the egys will ex- perienco in coming out licre, may 8o force thoir growth that they will hatch the next day, but this is not antici- pated. Had they been spawned here, the period wounld probabl bo forty-tive days, bul this ship- nment is expected to hateh in from fifteen to twenty days after arrival, Having hatched the young fish re- semble hairs with a minute bag on one end kuown as the yoko sack, and which containg all the food they will require until able to feed like any well-rogulated member of the finey tribe, Now, particular care is taken with the water to see that it is free from all impurities and that the sup ply is 1egular “and suflicient. The temporature of the water will be kept at about fifty degrees. Yesterday it was fifty-four, and by moans of ice, plonty of which is at hand, it can be reduced to 48. Should the eggn have been overheated in their journoy out here, a large number will dic, the percentage running all the way from five to fifty. Then again some fish are born with crooked spines, which prevents them frcm ever feeding, and consequently they die. As soon as one dies o fungus kind of a growth takes place, and unless the egy is im- mediately removed it will disease an- other anj it in turn will die. In about thirty to thirty-five days the young fish drops its yoke sack, sports a set of fins and paddles around in goud style. 1t in then sbout from half an inch to an inch and a quarter in length, andis a perfect fish in everything save age and size, Now is the time that those which are to be sent to the various parts of the state to stock the stremms with are Plnu-tl in the iron casks for shipment, Those that remain must be looked after for two or three months, at which timo they have grown to an inch a d a half and two inchesin length.® Four times o day they are fed, on a mixture composed of two parts grated beef liver and one part milk, ‘A pint cup will hoid a dfl food for all the fish that can be lu-pt its milt oy dropped the {spawn obtained; tho fish | back into the pond placed in the hatching process begins. A trout witl yield from 500 to 2,500 s, and do this every yoar up to ht or ten, which is about their duration of life. Barrenncss some- imes occurs, from reasons unknown, They are subject to diseason, various upon are thrown 1t the eges are house aud the various Kinds, but almost all traceable to dirt—mnot mud, for that s considered a good remedy for fish sickress. Lot a lot of tish got weak and sick, and thoy aro imme- diatoly put into wmuddy water. It purifies them, and they gencrally como out reinvigorated and as bright as a8 a new dollar, Trout generally spawn botween October and Fobruary in the cast, but in the mountains the colder water puts the scason oft until about from March to June, In a veneral talk with Mr. Bogart, he said that trout and salmon and bull-heads (a species of cattish) were among the best varioties for the mountain streams, while for sluggsh walers, ditches and lakes he decmed the Gorman carp undoubtedly the best fish. Inthe single stock pond now on the grcunds Mr. Sisty has twenty-thres German carp, which were put out last June. They are Jiable fo spawn this coming sum mer, and the stock will be materially increased. It is intonded that next April the first distribution of tish will be made. It will be of the trout variet; Mr. Sisty has now twenty- four iron cans, tin lined, to be used in shpping tho young fish, They will hold from five to fifteen thou- sand cach, according to the size of the tish and the distauce they are to be sent.
