POLITICAL PAUPERS. he Hungry Horde of Office Hunters Growing Alarm- ingly Numerous. Socdnl Life at the Capital=-The Reoeption of General Keifor. Senator Saunders and the Railroads. Oorrerpondence of Tin B, Wasnixaroy, December 20.—The active organizer of the primary elec- tions who left home fondly cherishing his midsummer night's dream of a fat office in Washington this winter, as a eomponsation for valuable services rendered, involving time, money and Toss of sleep, is growing despondent, and softly murmurs the sad strains of Sweet Home,” in most pathetic, while he hangs around to get a “few moments conversation” with the new member from his dis- trict. Hope has fled, and now he is trying to borrow money to pay his board bill and passage home, a wiser and sadder man. It is the old, old story of a mnew o83, o8- pecially when there is a change of party in power. A rushing to- Washington for a position of some sort under the government, which to an outsider seems to be an easy thing to get. Uncle Sam's overcoat has ample pockets, but there is a bottom to thems Since President Pro Tem Davis, of the senate has declared there shall be no change in the senate officials with his sanction, and thcre can be fow without it, as he has the casting vote in case of a tie, senators settle back on their dignity in a most self-satis- fied way when a poor constituent begs him to get him a position of some sort to keep him from starving, BUT YE GODS “‘Home, a voice congr never in the history of American pol- itics has there been such a scram- bling for office in the house of con- gress as there now is! The squirming of manly humanity of every kind and color that densely pack every nook and corner of the capital, presents the appearante of a magoty old cheese when exposed to the sunlight. And why there is such rush to Washington for official position, when it is said that our country was never in a more prosperous condition, is a conundrum our distracted M. C.'s are trying to solve. Ere this letter can reach you, Congress will have adjourned for the holidays, and what will then be done for this hungry crowd, who, as many of them aver, haven't money enough to take them home, is a matter to be turned over to our charitable institu- tions. Again do 1 appeal to the young men and women of the glorious west to remain where there is room and hon- est labor for all who seek it; where you may become independent and useful tillers of the soil, rather than come to Washington to accept the ignoble service of gathering crumbs from the master's table. While society will affectly lift her lace handkerchief to hor weeping eyes whenever the ‘‘dear dead” is men- tioned, hife at the capital is.too short to pine over departed greatness and already OHIO HAS OPENED THE BALL of the season by giving a grand re- ception at Masonic Temple to the uewly elected speaker of the house, Gen. Keifer. The occasion was grand as the fair, handsome women and talented, brilliaut men of Ohio could make it. It must be a grand sensation for a modest man to experience who was suddenly launched into power tosit in an elevated position for threo mortal hours before an admiring, gaping au- dience, and listen to fifteen or sixteen —1 think .it was sixteen—pretty speeches all about himself ! That Speaker Keifer is a ‘‘great man” none will deny who have seen and know him. Heis a very ‘‘wsthetic” look- ing man of the sunflower order, his face being large, round and full, with a genial, sunny expression, set off with a pair of eyes of heaven's own blue. It is hardly possible, judging from physical proportions that Speaker Keifer has lived wholly upon robin wings and sweetened wind! (soda water), Judge Lawrence, first comp- troller of the treasury, was the pre- siding genius of the evening, and not- withstanding he was twice boaten in the cenvention by Ge {eifer, as candidate for congress, presented the speaker to the audience in a very elo- quel flatterng manner, peculiar to Judge Lawrence. Mr. Reed, of Maine, one of the candidates for the speakership, being called upon, made the happiest im- promptu speech of the evening, He {‘lau the rare gift of uniting eloquent political sentiment with humorous personality in a way to ‘‘bring down the house” tremenduously. That Senator Sherman still has a place in the hearts of his countrymen, was evident by the long and continued storm of applause which followed his presentation to the audience as one who would make a little speech for the occasion. While waiting for the storm to abate, his face was wreathed in smiles, for John Sherman can smile, and when he does it is like the sun suddenly bursting through a cold November sky Tho tinest looking, and the ladies de- clared, the handsomest Ohio M. C. seated on the platform was General James S. Robinson. As the geueral is » newly eleoted member, just what he will do about it remains to be seen. If he gallantly conquers hearts, as he bravely conquered rebels while in the Union army, Mrs. Robinson would find it to her advantage to come to the National capital at once, Awmong other distinguished persons invited to the platform, Nebraska was represented by Senator Saunders. 1 also noticed in the giddy throng your representative Valentine, who seemed to be raidently happy surrounded with a bevy of pretty almiring ladies. SENATOR SAUNDERS AND THE RAIL- ROADS, Congressman Belford of Colorado, was reported the other day by the Cincinnati Enquirer correspondent as saying: ‘‘Committee are formed ins she house and senate to take care ofy the rich and stifle the claims of the poor,” adding: *“Did you ever take a look at the make-up of the committes on railroads in the senate ! There is Senator Sewell who, it is said, wi slected by the Pennsylvania railroad company; Saunders of Nebraska, who represents, it is said, Union I Pitt Kellogg very e over such a committe There are three or four other railroad lawyers who receivo fees as practicing attor- neys and vote in the senate as their corporations desite. This isa nice spectacle to be presentod to the coun- try. One political party 1s just as bad as the othe A Washington Post reporter to-day investigated the gentlemen reforred to by Mr. Belford, and among them Senator unders, The Post re- porter says: Senator Saunders, of Nebraska, was found in his room at the Riggs House, and upon being made acquainted with the statements of Mr. Belford, aaid ““1 have not a dime's worth of in- terest in any railroad in the land. 1 do not own a cent’s worth of railroad stock. 1 did not know that I was considered the champion of the Union Pacific road, and I defy any one to point to any act that I have done dur- ing the four years that I have been en that committee, which has shown that 1 have done more for that road than for any other road in the cowntry. 1 do not want you to understand, how- ever, that I am an cnemy to rail- roads. I believe and feel as all west- ern men must believe and feel that railroads aro essential elementa in the progress and development of the country.” “Your position is then that you en- deavor to represent all roads fairly and equally without being the repre- sentative of any particular corpora- tion 7" “Exactly. T am not the pet of any, nor controlled by any, nor backed by any, nor influenced by any. What- ever applies to me in the matter of the Union Pacific road applies with far greater force to Mr. Belford himself, for into his city of Denver that road runs four branches. The most that can be said of me is that I have some little knowledge of railroad building, and it was this and this only which lea to my being placed on the rail- road committee,” Senator Sewell, of New Jorsey, also mentioned by Mr. Belford, is out of the city and at his homs in that state. AFTER A CHILD. A Remarkable and Suoccessful Chase from Pittsburg to the Indian Territory. Kansas City Times, Wednesday About ten days since the news- papers told of the kidnapping of a four-year old child named Maggie Pickett from her home at Latroba, Westmoreland county, Pa., by a man and woman supposed to be John Burnes and wife. Last evening the child was at the union depot in this city in charge of her uncles, John and Enoch Davis, and the story of her re- covery reads like a romance, the two young men having followed her over 1,300 miles, and at a point only a few miles from the Indian Territory line she was overtaken and relcased from the clutches of her kidnappers. The child, who is a beautiful little girl not quits four years of age, was born and raised’ 35 Latroba, her parents being well-to-db people of the middle-class, and her beauty was known from one end of the town.to the other, being of that order which niade people stop in the streets and ask who she was. It is supposed that this was the cause of her abduction, her kidnappers hoping that a large reward would be offered for her return, not, however, by her parents, who were poor, but by the city or state. ‘The child was stolen on the afternoon of Friday, December 9, by a man thought to be John Burnes, acoal miner, and his credited wife. A late train took them to Pittaburg and there the trail was lost fora time, Two young men, uncles of the girl, however, went to Pittsburg and at that point column after column was written about the case, and at last it and that a man golden -~ h; was ascertained woman with a child had purchased two ti for Kansas City via Chicago on Monday, December 12, and thither the two uncles hastened. The trail was easily followed by the two bag- gage checks of the two trunks beloug- to Burnes and wife, and at Chicago the couple came to Kansas City over the Chicago & Alten road and stopped at the Valley house, situated on Ninth street, between Hickory und Mul- berry. The two uncles, John and Enoch Davis, reached Kansas City last Friday morning, and at once searched the registers of all the West Kansas hotels, and atthe Valley house were found the names of John Burnes, wife and child, and the girls in the house remembered the beauty of the THE OMAHA DAILY BEI ingor prison place. And then the long chase from Pittsburg, Pa., to the Indian territory lme, south of Arkansas City, was avery clever picce of detectivogwork. When the party roached Wollington on Monday o tolegram was sent to little Maggie Pickett’'s parents at Latroba, telling of hev recovery, and last night a telo gram was received by John Davis, at the union dopot, in these words Hurry how +0 meon and the child loft last for St. Louis via the Missouri Pacitic road, where they will take the Vandalia for Pittaburg. Geo, Moredith, Jersey City, wr tes “The SrriNe Brossom you sent me had the happiest effect on my daughter; her headache and depression of spirits h & van- ished. Corvespondence of Tw B WitsonvitLe, December 20, 1881, —This section of country, hke all the balance of the great Roepublican valloy, is gradually and healthfully Few build,, farmers are growing and improvir the their farms, and overy- ings are going up, foncing in thing Jooks prosperous, of wheat and rye was harvested, and the corn crop is a good one for land so new and the manner in which it 18 cultivated.) The Mothodists, with the help of the Considerable Presbyterians, have crected as finc a church as 18 in the valley. Both congregations use the house. We need a better school house and expect one ere long. We have a Historical readi ioty, which meets evory Wednesday oven- ing, and a} Good Tomplar lodge with a large membership. The Farmer Alliance club expects to get in good running order soon, Esquire Rearode has built a neat house and stable of Nebraska brick. We would advise the farmers and all who are in sympa- thy the farmers movement, as this is the time most subscriptions expire to select from those journals that are working with us and don't support those that are afraid to publish the call for the special wmeeting at Hastings in January. These belong to the railroad and are the worst monopolies we have. Every onedown the way is going for Tue Ber and we want to make it solid so that Jay Gould wont want any stock in it. Let every farmer stand by Tue BEk and give'it their undivided support and let every alliance in the western part as woll as the eastern part of the Stato send a delegation to Hastings on the 25th of January, and if conducted as well as the Lincoln meeting they will never be sorry of their going. The weather is beauti Stock looks well and doing fine on the buf- falo grass. We hardly think it worth while to .send in a bid tor securing tho location of the next soldiers’ reunion at this place, but this part of the State don't want it to go further east than Kear- ney or Hastings, CLODHOPPER, FARMERS AND MECHANICS. If you wish to aveid great danger and trouble, besides a no small bill of expense, at this season of the year, you should take prompt steps to keep disease from your housdwld, The system should be cleansed, blood purified, stomach and bowels regula- ted, and prevent and cure diseascs arising from spring malaria. We know of nothing that will so perfectiy and surely do this as Electric Bitters, and at the trifling cost of fifty cent a bot- tle. - [Exchange. But they had gone, and not until late that afternoon was it dis- covered that Burnes had purchased the tickets for Wichita via the Atchison, Topcka & Santa Fe road. The samne night found the two uncles bound for the same point, only thirty- six hours hbehind “the stolen child, and the chase became most exciting. At Wichita it was found the parties had gone to Arkansas City, and when the purspers reached that point on Sunday last the discovery was made that Burnes had hired a pair of horses with a driver, and was making for the Indian Territory. The Davis boys did the same thing, and after a hard drive the first carriage was overtaken and the child taken from her abduct- ors. The little one, when she saw her uncles, held out her arms and begged to be taken from ‘‘this bad, nasty woman,” and cried for her mamma, The two Davis boys were without arms of any kind at the time of the meeting, and after recovering the child they al- lowed the two abductors to escape and then drove back to Wellington, where on Monday night they took the train on the Kansas City, Lawrence & Southern Kansas road for Kansas City, On the train yesterday the child was the recipient of great atten- tion from the ladies in the cars, asthe story of her ubduction and recovery became known to every one, and the two men who, like sleuth hounds, fol lowed Burnes over 1,300 miles, were also congratulated upon their sagacity.
