John Nolan Fonnd Dying in a Corn- fleld--Suspioions That Vio- lence Was the Cause. John Nolan, an elderly and respectable {armer at La Platte, Sarpy county, died yesterday morning at that place under peculiar and somewhat suspicious eircum- stances. The story, as state | by his son, who came to Omaha last evening to secure the sorvices of an undertaker, is as follows: The old man owned and lived in a com- fortable house upon a firm of 160 acres, He has owned for ome time a large num- ber of cattle, which he bas been in the habit of keeping a corral, About 3 oclock yesterday morning he heard the cattle breaking out of the corral and get- ting away. Rousing his wife he tcld her he was going to head them off and in- structe | her to open the g te leading int» the corral th t the stock might be v{n\en in. Saddling a gentle mule he was in the habit of riding he rode away, while Mrs, Nolan looked after the gate, In a short time h+ cattle com renced to roturn and finally all had re-entered the coral, but nothing was to be seen or heard of Mr. Dolan. Vs wife waited some t'me und then started the direction he had gone, when she met the mulecoming ' ack, on the walk, but riderless. Her worst fears now being aroused the anxions wife awoke & weghbor named Holmun, who ea 1ed his hircd man and the thiee went in wearch of the missing farmer, Followiny the tracks of the cattle it was found that, after breaking from the corral they had headed direct for t e comfield of another neghbor name | Hen'y Iske, which was only about eighty rods distant. £Re the field 1t ¢ had been there and the mule's tracks were wl-o frund, Accordingly the field was sen-ched with lanterns, and in a few min- utes Mr Holman’s hired wan found Mr, Nolan lying on th - ground and apparently insensitle. ‘The unc nscions man was earr ed to his house, where he expired in about an hour. A, hysician was summoned as quickly as possible, but did not_arrive until the farmer was past relief. U i of the dead mn the doctor g ve " opinton that death had be n causedby con- ge-tion of the brain, produced by injury to or blows of some kind on the head. ‘Whether the injury had been received at the immediate time of Nolan's falling from the mule, or previvusly, was not deter- mined. From circnmstances occurring recently, this opinion of the physician cased not & little excitement, and it was determined to at once telegra h the coroner of Sarpy county, who lives at Plattswouth, »nd have him hold a post mortem «xamination, which will protably. ocour to-day. - Theie circumstances, ax related by Mr. Nolan's son, are of such “a character a8 to direct suspicion quite strongly toward the man in whose com field Nolan wai found insensible. Tt appears that he and Iske hive not been on the best of terms for some tine, they having been involved in a lawsuit or two, and that trouble has heretofore arisen, on ac- count of Iske’s claiming that Nolan’s cat. tle had broken into and damazed his corn, About a week ago the cattle trespassed into the field referred to, which joins Nolan's :rop-rty, and in which the corn is still ungathered. Molan who had been to Plattsmouth, was '“m returning home when hesaw Iske on a horse, with a pitc - fork in his haud, nding among tho cattle and jabbing the fork into them in a seem ingly unnecessa y manner. He cro sed t) where Iske was and told the latter to let the cattle alone until Fe could drive them out, and then he would pay for whatever damage they had done. It is alleged that Iske, instead of heeding Nolan kept up his pitchfork exercise, and when fingntwr attempted to drive the cattle out struck him two or three times «n the head with the handle of the forlk. Although not knocked down by the blow olan was considerably stunned and suf- fered reverely all of that day from pain. Ho threatened to arrest Iske, but dropped the matter at the solicitation of 1is wm. Last week Nolan seemed to be as well as = Swede, inthe act of stealing ccal from a | yyual, althohgh complaining of his head at car near Wakefield’s lumber yard. Shots were fired on Twelfth street about half an hour after, which in- dicated that there was fun in the air, and which called Marshal Anzell and several officers to the spot. A quick detour of the varions saloons was made and the propri- ators told in linguage more forcible thau polite to shut up, while the bum- mers and bummeresses were instructed to make tracks foe their holes. A B rep rter learned a bit of news of no little importance last Saturday, and that is that a gentleman well known in Omaha has come into possession of four- teen Herdio coaches and propos:s at ouce to organize & company in our city and run them in eur streets as they ar» already run in Council Bluffs, The gentleman referred to is Mr. David Cole, of the commission house of Fearon & Cole, and the way in which he got hold of his Herdics was rather peculiar. When Peter Herdic established his lines of coachesin Chicago he got hold of a money- less adventurer to run the business, and he did run it—into the ground. In the first place he contracted for 14 coaches, worth $0,000, for which he was 10 pay in instal- ments. He at once acvertised for fifty drivers, who were easily foun', ani re- quired them to put up 225 each as secur- ity ""F"Nl faith against damages and so on, Then he started his line to runuing and took in all the receipts, run bills for all expenses and didn’t pay th+ drivers for two months. At the end of that time, when he cou'd drain nothing more out of the thing, he mortgaged the Herdics for all they were worth_and then skip, ed. The mort<agee was Mr, Cole's brother, and he now propeses to turn the property over to Davi1 for use in this city, and the latter will organize a company without de- lay, if possible, and have the Herdics here and ruuning before spring and in time to 5‘" the horse cars a pretty severe tussle or the Hanscom park und other travel. While Dr. S, D, Mercer purchased the right for this city it appears that under the peculinr ci cumstances under which the conches are obtined prevents its clashing with his clams, ind I'nk BEk sces no reason to doubt that in a short time Omaha will be pro.ided with a thoroughly equip- ped line of the modern and_couvenient ve- icles known as Herdics. Shovs. five years old, fell through a skylight in the roof of the new Union shop, about 9 o’clock yesterday morning, and was killed. The uofortunate youny man was precipitated to the ground, a He lived about forty-five minutes after the accident. Drs, Mercer and Ayers were at once summoned, but oould do nothing. Barry was probally emtirely unconscious from the time he struck. Coroner Jacobs was notified, and arrived in & few minutes after the young man breathed his last. He empanneled a jury, who examined into the cause of the accident. The jury rendered o verdict of accidental death, From the testimony presented to the jury, it was learned that Barry was em ployed with a number of cthers in painting the large building which the Union Pacific compiny are hastening toward completion, and which is to be used as a mammoth car con- struction and repuir shop, At the time the accident Barry was pain'i g the frame of o large skylight in the roof. Another painter, who had finished one side of the frame had just left 1arry, and was about ahun«red feet away., ring a peculiar sound_he turned and saw Barry standing with his hands in the air tightly clenche + and his face indicating intense suffering. He started tow.rd him, when he was _horrified by seeing Barry topple and full headlong over the edge of th - skylight frame, Wheu his companion rushed to the skylight he percerved the unfortunate painter lying on_the ground, twenty-five or thirty feet below, and ap- parently inanimate. Surgical assistance wis procured as soon as possible, Dr. Ayers amriyiog firt, He discovered a fracture of the skull and severe concussion of the brain, and pronounced the injury fatal.
