Nowsy Notes and Pleasant Personal and Business Mention. The many friends of Ira Smith, late clork at the Ogden hotel in this city, will hear with sorrow the demise of that most estimable gentleman, who died at the place of his confinement with that dread disease, small pox, between 5 and 6 o’clock on Saturday evening. Mr. Smith was one of these rare characters everybody liked, always courteous and obliging, In the position he held in the leading hotel in the northwest, Mr. Smith gained a friendship with . those with whom he was thrown in contact that even death cannot sever, Some time ago Mr. Smith visited, St. Louis, and on returning home was takensick. Soon it became evident that he had the small-pox in a very light form. He was immedi- ately removed into temporary quarters whom the larger one as a second-hand cloth- ing store. Mr. B, informs us that the blue front has seen its last days, for he room. Originally these buildings oc- cupied the site where the Everet block now stands, on the corner of Pearl stroet and Broadway, and were moved tures. . UNDRESS UNTFORM, A man with nothing on but a shirt and vest created considerable excite- ment amongst the young ladies who happened to be on Broadway Saturday night. Judging from the different acts of different men under the influence of the stuff they peddle in some of our saloons for whisky, the devil himself does the mixing, The man above mentioned (and, by the wn{, he was not a juryman) filled himself full of this mixture, went first to Wayne & Co.'s broom factory, doffed his pants and drawers and threw them behind one of the shops. He then went inside and began to throw the broom- corn and handles at the workman who at once pounced upon him and soon landed him into the street. The man then went up Sixth street to Broad- way, declaring that he was bound to John Bena's store for a pair of pants and woe be to the man who dared to interfere. CRAZED BY A RUMOR, One of the employes of the B, & M. railroad company, Owen Owens, at this point, sent to Burlington for his wife to come to Council Bluffs, As made she started. By some mistake she loft the train at Pacific Junction. While at the depot she heard a remark made that a man by the name of Owen Owens had been murdered in this city. She at once became very much ~ excited and took the next train, as she supposed, for this point, but it proved to be an cast bound train, On hearing that she had been at Pacitic Junction her husband immediately intercepted her at Creston by telegram, telling her to return and he would ‘meet her at Glenwood. He did so, but found her in a sad condition. The shock of the news that he had been murdered was ton much for her brain to carry. The woman seems to be ina dream. She thinks that she is in Burlington, and all efforts thus far to convince her to the contrary have proved futile. Dr. A, H. Studley, who was called on their arrival here, advised the hus- just out of the city limits. Here, with the assistance of one of our best physi- cians, he tried to successfully battle with the disease, but all in vain. What little vitality the poor mickly man had was overcome, and he ssed away at the hour above stated. gr. Smith has not been a well man band to return to Burlington with the poor woman, which he did. A THIN STORY, A wealthy but thin old farmer came into the city Saturday evening, riding a healthy but thin old horse. They were watohed by hundreds of anxious citizens, who were debating in their minds as to which one would split first, the old farmer or his fine pointed steed. NEW ENGINE HOUSE. ‘Work was commenced on the new engine house, at the junction of Main and ‘Bryant streot, where it is intended to locate the new fire engine. ON THE RAMPAGE, One of our well known business men got on a sproe last Friday night, and thinking there was a certain dark eyed woman up a certain flight of stairs on a certain street in this city, staggered thence, ascended the stairs and knocked. Noresponse came from within, The lady bird had flown. He became very angry, and swore he would kick the door in unless it was while, but ly concluded the front end of his foot was getting the worst ofit, Helet up and came down on the walk, Not content to go home without having a fuss, he went to the ofice of R, 8. Cole & Co., on Main stroot, and tried to kick their office door in. He got inside and began abusing the buokflmvper, who stood his non- sonse a while, and then opening the door he pointed that way, looking the man sternly in the eye as if to intorm him what he might expect 1f he did mot leave. The merchant, thinking he could go with less injury to his posterior by getting a little in ad- vance of the book-keeper's boot, put on full steam and went. A COMING ATTRACTION, The irresistible Jessie Couthorie will appear in one of her unique en- tertainments at Bloom & Nixon's household. She was a sweet, pretty little child, the pride and pet of her bereaved parents. ANOTHER DYNAMITE CAR. It is reported that another dyna- mite car has been sent to this city; that the Union Pacific refused to re- ceive it; that it was returned to the company that brought it, and stood on the track near where the Wabash engine exploded. FLEECED OF HIS LUCRE. A man from Mills county visited one of our dens of infamy, and hun; his coat, containing between two ani three hundred dollars, on the bed post. When he awoke in the morn- ing he was surprised to find it gone. e is still in search of the coat and contents, He managed to save his pants. 1f he gets out of the scrape with only the loss of hismoney he will be in better luck than another man from Mills county, who occasion- ally visits this city.
