This car could be easily lifted off and on the track when trains were encountered, and the engineer would have made his rounds in one quarter the time and with one-tenth the physi- cal wear and tear of the St. Gothard member of the fraternity. The tunnel is perfectly straight from end to end, and the engineers met each other so accurately that their centre lines were within - a hand’s breadth of an exact coincidence. As the head- ings approached each other, the explo- sions of dynamite were distinctly aud- ible through nearly 400 metres (1,325 feet) of intervening rock. The total length is 15 kilometres (9 1-3 miles). The grade ascends uniformly from | sis Goschenen to the summit of the tun- nel, which is 1,154 metres above the sea level, and 45 metres (148} feet) above Goschenen; while it is only nine metres above the mouth at Airoio. The ascent from Goschenen to the summit is 5.85 per cent. while the de- scent to Airolo is 1.25 per cent. The summit of the tunnel is 300 metres (990 feet) below the surface at Ander- matt, and 2,000 meters (6,600 feet) be- neath the peak of Kastelhorn of the St. Gothard group. This_tunnol summit is 1,154 metres, the Mont Cenis Tun- nel summit is 1,338 metres, and the Pacific Railway summit is 2,513 me- tres above thesea level. Thereare no air shafts in the St. Gothard Tunnel, the two entrances being the only open- ings. When themechanical operations cease inside, and the many existing ob- structions to a free passage of air, such as scaffoldings, heaps of debris and un- finished parts near thecentre, are done away with, there will nothing un- pleasant in the passage through this tremendous tunnel, which is 2,700 metres (13 miles) longer than that through Mont Lis, The engineers assert that the tunnel will be ready for traffic by the firat of January next, although the whole line from Lucerne to Biasea will not be opened until next July. Although this great enterprise is successfully ap- proaching completion, and that is the best evidence of good management, there is room tor some improvement in what may be called the niceties of construction, The means of access to the tunnel could be advantageously improved. There is to much delay in getting the shifts of men to their work, much valuable time being lost at the points whero they have to change trains. Another thing struck me as being desirable, There was a certain absence of clearing up in the com- pleted portions of the tunnel, and had officiated as lady of ‘the White House. The lat‘er died, unmarried, at twenty-two years of age, of cholera. Mr. Fillmore's widow, who died i August last, was his second wife, whom he married some little time af- ter he ceased to be President. She was the widow of Ezekiel MecIntosh when Mr. Fillmore married her. Her maiden name was Caroline McMichael. From the New York Tribune, “Good apples are going to be mighty scarce this year,” remarked a prominent shipper “of fruit in Wash- ington market to a Tribune reporter the other day. ‘“The crop in this state is the lightest I haveeverknown, and from all over the country the re- port comes that there has been an un- usual falling off in the supply, which will be the smallest we have had in fifteen years.” “What is the cause of the failure of the czop?” was asked. ““In the first place, this is what is called an ‘off year,’ and 1 must say it is decidedly ‘off.” The crop last year was 80 unusually abundant—in fact, it was the largest I have ever known— that shippers expected to find a scarcity this season. There would be nothing_unusual in the ordinary course of events. But a second causo of the diminished supply is to be found in the unprecedented drouth which has prevailed in all parts of the country this year, and espe- cinlly ~ in New York. The latter cause has most effectually cut off what would otherwise have been a very fair average crop. We look to New York state always for the bulk of our supply, and this year it has been a complete failure, The apples which come from the northern and western counties are usually the favorites in the market; but a large majority of the shipments from these sectiong this year arc so small and stunted that they are hardly fit to be put upon the market. Occasionally a fine lot is received, but we have been obliged to get our best shipping apples | from other sections. 1 should say that the present crop in this state was Paxton P I’ Reed 15 Roney A Rue A B Rohrer S M Rogers J O Sewell J Sel’on A Sippe J Sehrum J Samuelson J P Smith T W R Samuelson J D 2 Skin Tignor R Van Sickle A Wells H M Weckerlin J.
