This is the truck eity of Ameriza Within a radius of twenty miles of Norfolk is the real garden of the south. Hore is tida water, hore is a atretch of country on which one eould almost say that the sun never ceased to shii THR FARMS The farma vary in mre from eighty to 300 acres, with avorage. 1t isa grand sight to ride out from Norfolk among thess big gardens. While the land is sufficiontly slevated for drainage, there are stretches oo aod eight miles long almost as levol as a i The soil is wonderfully rich, | and though it has been worked for a hundred years past, it is only h and thero that a spot needs compost | to renew its vigor. Tho best (n'un,i or these brivging the highest prices, | aro those having a river front, Wi they uro no richer than others mi away from water, the owner hos the | viver for a highway to market and re tura, " WORKING ¥OIL A CERTAINTY Thero i3 1o uncertainty about this truck farming. Every owner isdoad sure of a fair return, no matter how bad the season. A farmer who con- fines himsoli to two or three crops may be hard hit, but, here, what hurts one will help another, and if strawborries are & failure something else can ba counted on to make up the dnficionc)fl The truckmen do not depend on local markets, as farn | ers are obliged to, but know that Philadelphia and Nov York, with cheap water rates to either city, will purchase evorything they can raise. In a fair season, taking the average variety of truck, farm of 150 acres will pay a profit of from §70 to 890 per acre. They have paid even $120 per acre, and those lands readily bring $1060 per acre when, for any reason, they are for sale. THE BAELY VEGRTABLES, The first lettuce, onions and cucum- bers come from North Carolina, but Norfolk is only twelve or fourteon days behiud. Al the early stuff is raised under glass, and the high price it brings in New Ycrk offsots the farmer for his extra trouble and ex- pense. Long enough before the snow 18 melted from the hills of the north Nozfolk is ready to supply our tabl with what our own soil weuld not | vield until three months later. BTRAWBERRIES, A man who sees 175 acres of straw- berry plants in one unbroken field looks upon a sight to be remembered. This is the largest field in the south, but there are scores of fifty, seventy- tive and one hundred-acre fiolds in eastern Virginia. The owner of this big field last summer omployed as many as 1,700 pickers at once, being mostly women and girls, and a graat- er part of them encamped close to the field. The price paid for picking was two cents per quart. WATERMELCNS, The firat watermelons which reach the uorth come by canal to Norfolk from North Carolina, and two or threo shipments close out the crop and give Norfolk the market to ing of this fruit. Georgia is too far away to send up ripe melons, and the distance make the price too high. Virginia can pick melons one day and have them in the northern market the next, and at such prico as will give them a ready sale. Tho rule with some i8 700 hills to the acre, while others crowd in 800, If each hill re- turns one good melon, the yield per acre is §64; but each hill returns from one to four melons, which sell from seven to nine cents each, and it is easy to see what a profit the grower makea. Nearly overy melon reaching Nor- folk comes by~ water. Such growers as donot bring them in their own boats, sailed by their own crews, are furnished transportation by steamers which run up and down in the season for the express nurpose. CASH DOWN. A great feature about this truck business is that every purchase is paid for in cash as scon as delivered. Every box of berries, crate of cab- bage or dozen melons delivered at Norfolk is paid for on the nail, and in return ull the farm hands and berry- pickers are certain of the money the hour it is due. If there is any credit system ot all it is between the buyers at Norfolk and the sellers m the northern markets. ONE SBASON'S SHIPMEMTS, Last yoar the truck farms of Nor- folk sent to the New York and Phila- delphin warkets the following ship- ments: Two hundred thousand heads of cabbage; 3,600,000 quarts of straw- berries; 4,000 pounds of asparagus; 500 barrels of artichokes; 50,000 bar- rols of beans; 5,000 barrels of beets; 4,000 quarts of blackberries; 12,000 quarts of huckloborrios; 4,000 quarts of vaspberries; 11,000 quarts of govso- borries; 20,000 quarts of cherrie 000 barrels of cabbage; 30 000 barrels of cucumbors; 4,000 barrels of lettuce; 20,000 barrels of oniona; 60,000 bar- vols of peaches; 65,000 barrels of pes; 11,000 bushels of pears; 300,000 bar- vols of Irish potatoes; 2/500 barrels of swoel potatoes; 3,000 bushels of toma- toos: B00,000 watermelons; 300,000 pounds of grapes. THE LAND-OWNERS The land-owners include Aweri- cans, Germans, Eoglishmen, negroes, a few Scoteh and a number of French- men, and some of the most progres- sive, and those who are gotting rich the fastest, are men from the north, It is a fine climato, echools are nu- merous, and a northern man aceking a new nome will find the vicinity of Norfolk one of the most desirable locutions in the whole country.
