—_—ee - —— — COUNCIL BLUFFS. —— Reoord of a Day's Doings in Towa's Western Motropolis, In Winter Coal is a Necessity |chawed him up generally. and the Supply Seems Inadequate, Marriage of Mr, Wm, Ashton and Miss Jennie Millard, The News in Brief: A HAPPY WEDDING, When W, H. Millard went home on Wednesday night he looked sad and careworn. It was evident that some- thing was about to happen, and, pass- ing by about 8 o'clock, we were sure somothing unusual was taking place in the new hcuse he has just erected in Glendale. We sent our little Puck in through ‘the key hole to take notes, He came out and reported that a wedding had taken place. That Miss Jennie Millard and Mr, Wm. Ash- ton had united in mar- ringe by Rev. F. T. Webb, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal church. The affair was 1ather a private one. Only the relatives and a few friends of the bride were invited. These, including the Misses Oberholtzer and Bebee, members of the same graduating class (high school) with Miss Millard, Mr. W. W. Sherman acted as groomsman and Miss Gerner as bridesmaid. Re- freshments in abundance were pro- vided. The groom, Mr. Wm. N. been man's pocket is as dhry as meself.” When he had reached this yint she gave him o hack- hander under the Jleft ear This set the whisky to working and before it had got tirough, nccording to all accounts, it got the best of Bell, The Irishman claims, however, that she nearly bit his finger “‘intirely’’ and ) He says he don't know what the judge will do, but if he will let him off and get a pass for him “to Platsburge ho'll niver tuch & nuther drop of Bell: Clover's spirits,” BLUFFS IN BRIEF, John Ahels says. that he and Rev, Mr. Lemen's theological views blend nicely ao far as the question who laces the crowns upon the heads of Elurn]»onn rulers is concerned. I agrees with the reverend gentleman that that royal duty is performed by satarical hands, West Jack is keeping bachclor's hall, his wife having loft him alone until her return from a brief visit to Burlington, contracted by the city officers in the o of a crazy man from the transfer depot to the county jail. A womnan remarked the other day (andsshe is not a member ot the Pres- byterian church) that Charley Baug- han was a nico man and a public beno factor, even if he was sometimes a “Jittle” hard on the girls. J. W, Crossland is putting in an his new building on Brondway with fresh cold air, for the purpose of bet- ter keoping the boer and liquors that will be stowed there. Tho board of supervisors, we under- stand, have appropriated $2,000 to assist in building the levee. There is no doubt but that this city will be beyond the reach of another flood within a year at most. Quar- tions into which the m’w of the company is devoted. He if a steady industrious young man and bids fair to advance rapidly both n the es- teem of the company and in_ position. The bride is a young lady well-known to the people of this city, & daughter of W. H. &flillurd of the extensive grocery and produce firm of Hays & Gleason on Main strect. The hn|‘)-{:y couple lelc yesterday on a brief bridai trip and will visit his home and friends at Lyons in this state. May Joy go and return with them. DECIDED TO STAY, A family of emigrants, since their arrival in this city bound west, have concluded to remain in Towa. In conversation with the head of the family, he stated to Tur Ber reporter he believed that northwestern Iowa still offered the best inducements for those who contemplated farming. Since he started, in every town he Eaued through he has heard nothin; ut praises of Towa soil, an from all he can gather he believes there is mno state in the Union so sure of & good crop after the seed is in, He thinks, in- stead of crossing the river, he will take n team and go up into Osceola county, in the northera part of the state.. We believe he could not seléct a more promising location. GOOD PRICE FOR CORN, Wilfred Haynes, one of Pottawatta- mie’s young farmers, called at Tae Bee office yesterday. He says his corn crop will fall a little short, but that he will put as much upon the market asusual. He thinks that one-third less corn will be required to winter stock this than last season. He be- lieves that on an average the Potta- watomie farmers will sell as much corn as over, and that the best of all is they will get a good price. Tt is esti- mated that the corn crop this year will be 265,000,000 bushels short. The greatest falling off id reported from 1llinois, Missouri, Kansas, New Eng- land and tho territories, These show tho least, while Iowa is expected to put as much upon the market as usual, GOT THE MONEY. Last Tuesday Mrs. Eliza C. Ben- net received, at the hands of M. F. Rohrer, general agent here of the Mutual Life insurance company, e sum of $1,000 in cash, which was the amount of the risk that the company was carrying for Mr, Bennett at the time of his death, This certainly will be a great help to Mrs. Bennott, as she was left with quite a family of little children, the youngest unborn at the time her husband was taken from her. With the aid of this money and her own labors she will be able to keep her little flock together. * BUARCITY OF COAL, It is said that already, before winter has made its appearance, there is a scarcity of coal in Council Bluffs. There is a wrong somewhere that should be righted. The coal dealers say that the roads are in fault, and the roads say that the cosl dealers don’t keep enough coal on hand; that some of them sell a car load and then send away for it. It does seem strange that with the railroad facilitios we are blessed with we are obliged to froeze half the winter for want of coal. A xailroad company that will allow coal to bo side-tracked for the sake of a lit- tle extra fréight money ought to have 1ts whole concern - side-tracked for all time, AN ECCENTRIO CHABACTER, The was occupied yeater- day afterngon by quite an original © r, an Irishman by the namo of John Langdon, - arrested by Ster- linly, Ho was u‘l\urt,‘ thigk-set, dir- ty specimen with only one foot, the (rother haying been eaten off either b, disease or some ferocious . animal. We hope he will con- nect the opera house with it —that will make Boyd's look sick. J. Mullier is moving into his new brick building, one of the most exten- the west. Ex-Alderman Graham has put a crow of men at work cutting through the bluff on the west side of Grand View park. When the city can afford it, this passage should be arched over with granite. It is claimed that colored people never kiss cach other. How is this, Burke? And now the news comes to us that Council Bluffs will be the western terminus of the grand continental route direc from New York, with 230 miles in this state passing through Adams, Wolls, Huntington, Wabash and Miami counties. Mrs. C)mpmnn, wife of our distin- guished United States marshal, has roturned from a recent vieit to her daughters who are attending school at Vassar. The Big 4's big band discoursed some fine music on Broadway yester- day afternoon. Laura Sheldon got into ‘limbo” and in charge of Officer ‘Sterling for assaulting o sweet sister yesterday. She was taken to, li;olima headquarters, aid her fine and went her way, re- Joicing that it cost so little.
