New YoRk, July 23, Events of the week in money circles were quite important, Money was easy throughout the week at 24@3 per cont as the ruling rates for call loans. Foreign ex- chanee was dull and weak throughout the week, and rates v ere reduced. Govern- ment bonds were quiet and prices show a declinefor the week of } per cent in the 4?- and 45, and & for the extended bonds, Railway and miscellaneous speculation was characterized by marked depression in early, and weak when there were large transactions and considerable excitement. St. Paulled the down movement and de- clined sharply, The cutting of freight and passage rates by the trunk lines and the reports of the great damage to crops by recent storms tm(l an unfavorable effect on the market and caused a decline of 1@ 91 per_cent; weakness was also very marked n Alton and Terre Haute, Chicago, Bur- lington and Quincy, the coal shares and some of the newstock, Toward the close there was a firmer feeling and a_recovery of @64 per cent, the rise being chiefly due tothe cornering of short contracts to-day, however, the unfavorable advices from Washington, about the president, caused a sharp decline, and some of the list closed at the lowest prices of the week. ———— MONEY AND STOCKS, New York. The record now is the same as that for weeks past. The money market is easy, 10 per cent. to desirable names on mode ate time, yet in individual small values there has been a fair supply of paper. From all reports bank money sold to customers is doing & good deal of quict work, as it stays out & long time. In the absence of large borrowings, some of the banks have been seeking good paper, but without finding as’ much s they could accommodate, Still there has been a fair degree of activity in moderate loans, furnishing good evidence of the gen- eral healthful condition of trade. City deposits keep up well and checking is ac- tive, there being plenty of use for money in moving miscellaneous trade, manufuc- turing, building, railroad work, lumber- ing. ete.
