The County Jailor Defended by the “Herald.” The Omaha Herald, whose editor is president of the Nebrasks Society for the Prevention of cruelty to Animale, endorses the actlon of the coanty jailor 1n putting a lot of tramps nuder the hose, and after pounding them about for some time with a powerful stream of water, leaving them water- soaked and chilled in s cold cell over wmight. The Herald does mot ques the facts, which are well, established, but says that Sheriff Guy reported the act to the county comumissioners, “‘who approved the jailor's course ” It expreeses the opluion that ‘“‘the little clean water turned upon the trampe was best for them,” and quotes ex-Councilman Stephenson as saying that “it served them right.” The position which The Herald takes n this matter is one which chal- lenges attention. It has made some pretentions toward defending the weak and helpless of the brute creation, but when the sufferers are a lot of miser- able, friendless, God-forsaken trampe, The Herald endorscs the act, even when 1u violation of the law and car- ried to an extreme for which there is no possible excuse. Comment on the Herald's course is unnecessary, bat as it has spoken for the county commissioners, the Brr must conclude that those gentlemen have been too hasty in sustaining their jaflor in a plain and direct vio- latlon of the law.
