The modern_flonring mill is & huge | ¢jock stracture, employing many men, and the wheat is turned into flour by the frelght-train load daily. Oneof the ‘monster mills in Minasapolis, Minn., covers sa ares of of 380 by 80 feet, and Is seven stories in heigat. I capacity is 4,200 barrels daily, which requires about 20000 bushels of wheat or fifly car loads to keep the mill in operation. It does not depexd upon the old fashionad burr mill-stores to convert the wheat into flour, but the process of manufacture is to first run the whea! through a brushicg ma- ochine, the old-fashionsd smat ma- chines baving been discarded. After the wheat has been cleansed by run- ning through the brash machine it is ran through corrugated iron rollers, which split the craase of the berry open, thus liberating the dust which Ties In the crease, o that it can be re- moved by Eolting. A very small per- centage of low grade flour is made during this first reduction. The grain then passes through a process techni- ly known as scalp ‘move the dirt and flour, afrer passes througha second set of corra gated rollers, by which it is further broken; then it is passed through | sald Frank, as he handed cut 8 5 cent cigar to the editor, and put it on the | te. “That's business,” sad_the county “Keep that up, Frank, and after awhile you csn boy a now slate, won't have to sponge this one (ff every time you fill i g ““Eggs,” raid the sheriff, taking a cheir by the stove, “‘eggs is euge, know, but I remembera time whea egzs wera o ecarca that if the yolk of all you could bave fourd iu the whelo county had been rolled Into one it woulduw's bave filled the cavity in the milk tooth of » apring chicken. She'd get up nights ‘and go epooking around to find a place with egge in it. She got down in the cellar and settled herseif herself on a peck measure of turnips and commenced hatching them out. We drove her away. Oue dsy I found her out in_the garden huddled down in peace. She was eogsged In warming up a_china door-knob to see second reel, which e moves the flour and middlings. This operation is repeated successive- Iy uatil the flour portion of the borry i3 entirely removed from the bran, he necessary ssparations being made each reduction, somt mes re quiring five or six. ~Tae middlings from the several cperaticns are re- duced to fiour, after being run through the purifiers by successive reductions, on smooth fron or porcelain rolle @ of the principal objects 5o i On by this ayatem of grindig s to o bralsing of the grain; another, to extract all the dirt from the crease of the berry, and a third, to thoroughly free the branjfrom thejflour in order to obtalajsa large a yield an possible. There are in Minneapolis twenty- eight of these hugs merchant mills, making 1t ihe largeat flour manufactu ring place in the world, and its pro- ducts are sent to sll partsof the oarth. The grower of wheat no long- or patronizes the grist mill, bu: buys his floar of the retail dealer. The grists of the eastern or middle states are small and unpretenticus concerns, only useful in grinding provender for the neighborhood for the purpose of feeding their horees, stock and awine. And even now they are forced to com- pete with large mills in the west and northwes’, which make a specialty of grindicg feed by the carload and send- ing it to an eastern market. The miller of ancieat timee, who used to be regarded as an fmportant factor of factory, is nearly obsolete, and the time is not far distant when he and his toll-dish will be relegated to the domain ‘of the flax-spinnirg wheel, the handloom and the reaping sickle. A Wyoming Sheep Ranch. Laramie Boomerang, April 9, as our privilege, last Sanday, the country seat of that old velerau of the rail, J. B. Simpson, who a year and a balfago gave up his time-honored porition of locomatlve engineer on the Unien Pacific, and de- voted his attention and euergies to adorning a home and Improving a sheep ranch Mr. Simpson's ranch is about six miles south of Laramie, situate at the foct of the Black Hills, i a beautiful valley, overlocked by & glant red butté on the east, and stretching down to the railroad track on the west, while south and north roll away gentle hills in all the grandeur and beauty of a weatern landscape. Although but ¢ne year and a half old, this ranch already bears marks of the enterprising husbsndman and the prudent and tastcfal housewife, than whom no home possesses @ more ex- cellent one than that of which we speak. A gosd stone residencs, surrounded by & neat fence, inclosing fower beds and grassy lawns, forms the attrac. tive and most prominent featurs of the place. Opposite are a substantial log barn and atable, a comfortabie log house for herders. and a sheep-fold capable f holding 4,000 sheep. The latter is kept white-washed, and is olean enough for the abode of human balogs. Seven miles of barb:d wire fence inclose about 1,000 acres of grazing -and mesdow land. Oa the rolling kuolis feed some 3,000 sheep, white down toward th: railrosd stretches the expansive and luxariant meadow, from which about 250 tons of hay are annually cat. At conveniont distances from the house bubble up in crystal purity fif- ty-two springsof sparkling cold water, woft as the dews of heaven. From eral of these pipes lead the limpid streams to the kitchen, the pautry and the stock yards, whera tanks re- celve and discharge continually, thus ever keeping full of frech, cold water. A short distance down the beautiful stream, flowing from theso springs is located the sheep corral, where the dipplog and shearing are done. M. Simpson has just complated one of the most convenient and practicable dipplng apparatuses we havoe seen in this country. It consists of a swim- ming bath, two feet wide, thirty feet long, and four feet deep, onean being perpendioular, and the other a ger tle incline, with cleats fastencd on the same to enable the animal to walk out when he has swam the length of the bath, the whole being lined with galvanized iron. A shute from one of the corrals leads to the vertical end of the tank, and iuto this the sheep are crowded, one by one being forced in- to the plunge bath. At the outcome another narrow shute leads the cleansed theep to a second corral, where he Is allowed to raminate over the trying ordeal through which he has been so unceremoniously forced to pass. The heaticg of the sheep din is done by & small engine which ejects steam into a large tavk filled with to- bacco and water. From this tank lead feed and waste pipes, so that the solu: tion is always kept st the desired tem- perature Mr. Simpson hes not fed his folds apound of hay this winter, and ia- formed us that out of 3,200 sheep ho will not lose 300, although the season has been the severeat ever experienced by sheep raisers on the Laramie plains. It Is the purpose of Mr. Simpson t0 set out ornamental treesabont the premises, and ina few years his home willsbe a paradise on earth, a shaded, verdant bower, in which ha and his estimabls wife may spend in »ase and happiness the aftsracon of life's de- clining years, and wait for the golden sunset which shall summon them to sleep the sleep of the just. EGGS IN PIKE COUNTY. THE SHERIFF'S EXPERIENCE WITH 4 BBOOD OF SNAPPING TURTLES, 'WAY BACK IN FIFTY-FOUR, New York Sua. Miurorp, Pa., March 26.—'‘How aze eggs to-dayl” inquired the theriff as he leaned one elbow on the Orles- man House bar and watched Frank mix the ex-poundmaster his favorite beverage of seltzer and lemon juice. “The epg market is In such s state that this bar don't bresk another egg ina glass for you, and let you flavor it with four fingers and s thumb of $16 brandy, unless you get over the im- pression that you cau pay for it wi 10-pence and get back [ cents change, what she could get out of it. T felt sorry for the hen and let her set. A day or eo afterwards I found a snap- pivg turtle’s nest in the sand along the river. There were two eggs in it. I tock them home and put them under the old hen. I thought I'd have some fun, anyhow. Well slr, she hatched those eggs out, and I want to tell you that the experiment fied mo that whatever & hen hatcl is & pact of her or the famil; - longs to. Maybe you won't believe it, but those little turtles had feathers on thelr legs.” “How old wes the hen?” asked the ex poundmaster, as the sheriff paused. “They had feathers on thelr legs,” continued the sheriff, without notic- ing the inquiry, “and they had hitile spurs. The old hen was a litt'o sur- prised at_first, when she discovered what a brood she had, but she got along with them frat-rate until they were threo or four weeks old, and then sha found them hard to manage. There wasu' enough chicken in the tartles to make them feel at home in the poultry yard, and one by cne they disappeared until they were all goue. They had found their way to the river, and I never expected to see any of them again. The next summer 1 wes fishing up in the eddy, an3 very soou I saw a pretty good xized snsp- ping turtle swim in_to shore and crawl up on the sand, Ho wasu’t more | than ten feot from me, but ho either dida't see mo o¢ else didn’t mind me. He walked around & mitute and then tegan to scratch in the saud. I thought \hat was fanny, and couldn’t under- stand it. His next move made every- thing clear to me. He raised up on his_hind legs, flapped his flippers against his sides, stretched out i neck, and you may fire me through that wall if he dida’t crow! He was one of the turtles that my old hen had hatched on; and his chicken nature had developed. 1 tried to catoh him but he wan just 83 good a turtle as ho was a chicken, sud ho got away into the water, I never saw any more of him, but if ho has any descendants T may get one one of them yet, and if | I do I'll bring it down and show it to you.” Burdette on Politicians.
