Ths topic of Sunday's conversstim in tha hotels sud where pudlis men bave met has been the encounter in the senate between Senators Mahone and Viorbees and the pro-pacts of its renewal. Joking eside, there is cor. tainly an elemeut in Washingtou o ciety who seriously considered the Drobab lity that the chivalrous blood of the Virgivisu would demand satis- faction . arms, and the oniy question is, who gave the first offonse. Tae absardity of such an issue of a war of words s appareat i« all sensible peo- ple, and 1t 18 confidencly asserted that not ooly will the la-ter be no farther discussed, but that no allasion will be made to it iu the senate. Mahoue still r.f sen to see any one but his famlly, but this is his usual Baoday ocustom, aud Mr. Voorhees perempiorily dec'ined to be inter- viewed. - The friends of each talk freely on the subject. Republicans and democrats a'ike st Voor. bees did » mauly ac in disclaiming any ties of the article read, a8 he aid it 1o avoid personal feeling, and that if he had let the matter rest then all would have been well. His tauntihat the senstorneednot think of coercing from him anything, was whataroused the Virginian's ire, and Benator Manoy rllfln! slone called out from Mr. Vooraees the ep- ithet, “Unworthy the utterance of any brave or honorable man.” Among the republicans are many who think Senator Mahooe wight have rested satisfied with * the Tall Sycamore's"” original disclaimer of personalities, bat his friends insist that he was right in “talking back” when his oppenent began to speak of coercion. Toe dem- ocrata think Voorhees man enough in jndgment, as well s in valor, to take oare of himself. But his frisnas e will notrefer to the matter in the senate. The republicans will no doubt try to keep Mahorie in the back grouud after this, and whether they can keep him till remalns to be seen.. CAPITAL NOTES. § pocial Dispatot.es o The Bee. Itis stated vety positively that Dr. Loring, of Massachusetts, will be ap- &.(..--i commissioner cf agriculture ‘the place of Le Duo, 4o e rotired. " A reporter inquired of several dem- ooratic senators if they contemplated ‘% caucus soon. The reply fromall of them was in the negative. The dem- ocrata have no interest in the nomins- tions. They are just as willing to see the present incumbents of the offices continue as to put in new ones, and, in shorr, the democrats are united in & policy, and there is no oocaslon for & caucas. Senator Coukling still remains si- lent on the sutj ct of the pending contest in the senate, but his voice will ba heard in the republican cau- cus. If he insists on maintain.ug the dead lock he can probahly conteol the matter, but one of his friends said to- day that he was not anxious to post- pone the opeuing of the fight with the admintetration, and that the sena‘e snd the prople would soon be made sware of the fact. A cwicus of the republicans has beeu called for Monday at 10a. m., when the dead lock will be discussed. Tt is rumored that the president ad- vises the republicavs to sct ou the nomirations first aud then make thair fizht over the the election «f «fficars. This phese o’ the_question will come before the caucas Menday. Onited States Marshal Pitkin, of Louisiana, thinks his chances good for the Mexican mission.
