Wholesale Dealing in Birds and Wild Animals. How Menageries are Stocked. Atants Constitation* In 1844 or'45 Charles and Heury Reiche, two young Germans, having little less than the practical education that seems to be matural with young Germans, were bird-peddlers in New York. They went about from stract to street selling birds from etands. Their trade aas principally In canaries, which they had sent over from Germavy, where they only cost ten or twelve conts cach. They did a pretty fair business up to 1862, when they made a dariog stroke, that made them a fortuno and established the enormous business_they now con- trol. At that time California was in the flash of gold-finding. Gold was plentiful there, but luxuries few. There wasno transcontinental rosd, and the Isthmus route was tedious and costiy. Young Relche, knowing that canaries were unknown there, and believing they would becomo tho rage when once seen, determined to carry over a cargo. He, therefore, got 3,000 of the yellow fellows together, and, packing them in little cap started for the Isthmas. _ Arriving at Cartagena, he had his birds carried across to Panama bay by natives, caught a ship there and soon reached San Francisco. He was late in reach- ing tho ship, and the captain was about to sail without him, but seeing his boat flled with covered boxes, thought it was belsted mail matter. When Reiche drew near, the csptaln bailed him and asked him what he “Canary birds,” replied Reiche. *Cavary birds be —.” shouted “If T'd known it was birds, I'd ha’ left you lung ago.” Roiche's first ides of the flush tide he was to ride was derived froma homesick Englishman, who, hearing the whistle of a bullfinch that had been accidentally putin with the ca- narles, offered to pay the expenses of the entire cargo for that finch. As this smounted to $283, Reiche saw that he had struck s rich lead, and he put tho price of canaries at $25_each. They did become the rage. Hotels, saloons, private residences, all must have & canary. _The little yellow blrds made a oraze like the tulip mania. Tho price went up to $50, and the cargo was soon sold. Relche returned to Now York a rich man. About this time the menagerie becamo an Ameri can institution. The ‘“‘moral” show went abroad _through the laud, and there was a demand for Asiatic-Afri- can animals. _For yesrs Hambarg, in Germany, had been a sort of depot at which such animals were gathered by incoming ships from the tropi Reche concelved the ides of est; lishing a homse there, and supplying it steadily with all sorts of beasts, to be captared by the hands of hunters, working under his direction in the deverts and jungles. Up to that time the supply at Hamburg had been cas- ual, depending on what sailors or ship captaine might bring over. Mr. Reiche went INTO AFRICA AND ASIA. And found that his best wethod was to depend uzon native hunters, acting under the order of the sheikh, and di- rected by fow white men of courage and address. His syatem was soon 8o organized that his beast depot at Hamburg hecame the largest in the world. It was supplied constantly with all kinds of captares, from tiny antelopes_up to elephants, running through all the gamut from leopard to inoceros, From Hamburg he now plies the most of the parks and gar f Earore, and ships heavily to de America. He imports every wild ani- wal eold iu this country, and keeps & s*large and assorted stock on hand.” Nine-tenths of the snimals in Central Park, Now York, and a large propor- tion of those in other parks are his property. When_ ho receives a large consignment of lions or hippopotami, or s few rhinoceri and giraffes are billed to him, he places them in Cen- tral Park, whero they swait & pur- chase. He keeps in his store only a faw of the smaller animals—and even the aviaty in Central Park is stocked with his birds. He considers twenty Tions & good average stock, with proba- bly a5 many tigers, a dozen elephants, four rhinocerl (or rhinocerosses), and other beasts in proportion. The most extensive animal he g\;a‘l in is the hi tamus. A good hippopotamus s (to » man who wants him) from $10,000 to £12,000. They must be captured when they" are young, and raised on goat’s mifk, A caravan of hunters returning across the desert with captured auimals is a stre sight. Abont one thcusand goata brought with the caravan to farnish milk for the sntelops, hippopotami snd other milk drinkers. As the goats cease glving milk they are killed and fed to the flesh eatera, The ani- mals are carried in bamboo cages, rigged with ropes, and slong sorots the backs of the camels. From the coast they are shipped to Hamburg, where Charles Reiche recsives them, and thence they sre distributad ac- cording to demand. Elephants aze cwptared when young, and usually by driviog them into immense traps that converge rapidly until the beasts are cribbed into reash of ropes. A fino elephant will bring “from $1,000 to $5,000. Of course, the price of sni- mals varies with the demand. You muat get & man that wants & beast be- fore you can get auy price for him then’ the price depends upon how much he wapts him. A good com- panionable tiger esu be bought for $1,200, and a niee Jeopard is worth sbout $400. THE DEPOT FOR SEA LIONS is San Fraacisco, wHere a man named Mullet superintends. They are taken on the south California coast and bring about $400 each. Polar bears come from the Arctics, and are worth about §2000. They ave kept ia deep caves that are damp and su.]ess, or in de set in ice, and with huge blocks of ice drigping from the top. The point at which Mr. Relcha buys them is | am- burg, very few being taken in our Arctics. The snake trade is one of the important depsrtments. The hesdquarters for anskes is Tara, in Central America, though, of course, the boa comes from the Nile, and the ansconds from Africa. Toere are var- jous depots for rare fish, and Mr. Reiche is an enthusiast on this sub- joot, being owner of the New York squariom. The bright-colored fishes come from the tropical watars, and the dull-colored from Arctic sections. The ostrich has less sense than any land snimal, and yet is worth §1000. They are caught when young. Birds come from quarters. The most expensive is the bird of paradise, which sells for §200 to 500, according to plumage. Parrots, paroquets and monkeys are brought in grest numbers by sailors who come in‘on foreign ships. The principal shippiog points are Alexandris, in , and Ceylon, off southern In- dla. At the first point the animals { from the Nile region and the heart of | Africa are collected; at the latter the ! tigers and lions from the junglea of { Indla. The bed of the Nile ia the | best hunting ground, as it has been for yesrs, Almost every wild beast { of the tropics may be found there, { aud In fine ssmple. The African ele- phants are the smallest and moat stupid, but otherwise the beasts from Africs are large and vigoroua. The amount of business dome by Mr. { Reiclie is wouderful. _His standing order for canarios is 10,000 birds a week. These are Imported from Ger- many and sent all over the continent. He has an agent in Savannah, and ha sent shipments to Atlanta. Frequently he receives $50,000 worth of animals in one manifest. There is a growing demand from circuses and menageries and zoological gardens all over the country. No circus now travels without its managerie, and no park is complete without zoological de- partment, There is a large sale for rare birds and sntelopes for pri- vate parks and grounds. ~ Mr. Van- derbilt once gave $500 for a bird of A large number of parrota ‘and trained to talk and sing, s good talker being worth 8100 to £200. The supply ef all birds and an- imals must be kept up by importatien as few of them breed in captivity. Lions and tigers are_about the only Yearsbef: < Publie. This order is at once dispatched through various agents until'it reaches the hunters, who o ganizo a special expedition and cap- tareit. A pair of hippopotamus are now belng brought over for a circus at a cost of about $20,000. A large business is dome exporting AMERICAN ANIMALS; This business, well as the import- ing, is controlled by Mr. Reiche. The grizzly bear is the typical American beast, and is slways in demand for European buyers. The buffalo, moose, elk and " caribon are the larger animals exported most hesvily, they being American types. The opossum, the gray equirrel, the red fox, the hedgehog, are the moat popular of the smaller snimals, while the puma is in geeat demand as a new type. The mosking bird is a great favorite smong_birds, and Mr. Reiche has men who search the southern forests for them annually. The red-headed woodpecker is_exported heavily as a show bird, and the robin is esteemed in Eoglish parks asa quist but band- some felow. There isa_very large profit on the exchange. Mr. Reiche once bought & pair of fine crancs in Schoharie, N. Y., to fill an English order—gtving $256 for them and re- celving $400. There id an interesting story counected with the famous Lon- don’ show elephants, showing some of the points of the animal trade. A Mr. Kelly, a baoker, who drifted into the show business by a mortgage on the Van Amburgh menagerie, sent out a ship to Ceylon. with a number of Yankee houses, all ready for putting together. He had the sashes, doors, locks andeverything complete, Arriving at Ceylon, he s0ld the houses at enormous profit, ballasting his ship with coffee, and put thirteen elephants and a lot ef ani- mals aboard. He made $30,000 clear money by the trip, and had his ele- phants clear. Of this herd five wero trained for the London show, and one of them, Baby, is the mother of the first elephant ever born in captivity. Ot courte, Mr. Reiche has amassed a large fortune In his unique trade, He 1s more than a millionaire, and is cer- tainly growing richer. He hasa su- perb residence at Bergen, N. J., whera he is surrounded by every lux- ury that taste and money can com- mand. The bouse is fice, and is Ap- pointed with that admirable admixture of elegance and comfort the best Ger- mansunderstand so well. The grounds are noble, and are filled with hand- some statuary and living birds, ante- lopes, etc. He insisted, with & cor- diality that I conld not resist, that I must visit his house. A more delight- fal home I nover saw. Imet hisson, Herman Relche, a scholarly young follow, s graduate at the best col- loges, ‘and & man of charming man- ners. At this house, which might standas type of the American home, M. Relcho sponds his days with his family, quiotly and happily—manag- ing hi3 vast business eastly and accu- rately—s liberal, intelligent, highly- esteemed citizen. As I left hls house for a return to the oity, closing a day that had been full of surprises and_enjoyment, I smiled as I returned Herman Relche's courteous sslutation, and, looking at his slender figure, I wondered If he was not the only_young fellow In America who could go to his father and say: “I noticethat our stock ot tigers are low, and the girafies are entirely out. now supply of hippopotami, and bave abont six polar Dears sent over.
